Today, March 8, 2024, marks International Women’s Day. I strongly believe that International Women’s Day allows the world to raise awareness of the improvements needed for female empowerment in a sustainable way.
In today's society, women face many challenges. Undoubtedly, women have made significant contributions to the welfare of society and the country as a whole. Moreover, a society is better when women are given equal respect and are not taken for granted.
Contemporary women realize they have the skills and potential to leave their homes and contribute positively to their communities. Women's participation strengthens peace agreements, societies, and economies. We cannot deny the zeal and expertise they bring to whatever they do, whether at home or at work. They build not only communities but also themselves.
I firmly believe that everyone can contribute at least a small piece of service to protect and encourage women worldwide, given that everyone is born to a mother and has sisters or daughters. Therefore, we must always respect women worldwide.
As a journalist and the Founder, Chairman & Chief Editor of the Mettavalokana Buddhist Publications Centre in Sri Lanka, I am proud to have initiated the world's first International “Bhikkhunis” Buddhist Magazine and Website, specifically for all Bhikkhunis (Nuns) and laywomen worldwide. The “Bhikkhunis” International Buddhist Magazine, published in English and comprising 60 pages of articles related to Buddhism and Bhikkhuni Sasana, has been successfully distributed to 50 countries. Copies are regularly sent to prominent Buddhist Temples, International Buddhist Organizations, High Buddhist Monks, Nuns, and Masters worldwide, as well as to selected Embassies & High Commissions during International Buddhist Conferences and Forums. I am proud to have been involved in actions to promote women’s values and advocate for equal opportunities in our societies for more than 24 years.
I hold the highest respect for women today, as it is meaningful International Women’s Day. As a special gift from me today, I am releasing a special edition of my “Mettavalokanaya” International Buddhist Magazine here.
Since International Women’s Day on March 8, 2001, continuously for 23 years, have encouraged International Buddhist Nuns and women’s activities and their grand services to the world worldwide through the co-founding of the Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards (OWBA), led by Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Dr. Lee and Most Venerable Bhikkhuni Rattnavali. They will annually offer special appreciation awards as a part of the International Women’s Day celebrations.
In my observation, the “Outstanding Women in Buddhism Awards (OWBA) Ceremony” uplifts the skills of women worldwide. It's not only an awards ceremony or association activity but also the most efficient way to show respect for women globally.
I hope for a successful, protected, and happy brighter future for women.
