🌿 ISURUMUNIYA VIHARA – A SACRED GEM OF ANURADHAPURA 🪷

Nestled among ancient rocks and surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Anuradhapura, Isurumuniya Vihara is one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating historic Buddhist sites.

Built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa, the temple is closely connected with the early establishment of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Its beautiful rock carvings, ancient stone sculptures, and tranquil surroundings reflect the remarkable artistic and spiritual heritage of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.

One of its most famous attractions is the Isurumuniya Lovers sculpture, along with other ancient carvings that continue to inspire visitors from around the world.

🙏 Isurumuniya is more than an ancient temple — it is a living symbol of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage, history, and timeless artistic tradition.

🚫 5 TYPES OF GIVING THAT BRING NO MERIT

📖 According to the Vinaya Parivāra Pāli:

«"Pañca dānāni apuññāni puñña-sammatāni lokasmiṃ. Katamāni pañca? Majja dānaṃ, samajja dānaṃ, itthi dānaṃ, usabha dānaṃ, citta-kamma dānaṃ."»

The Five Unwholesome (Non-Meritorious) Gifts:

1️⃣ Majja Dāna – Giving intoxicants such as alcohol or drugs.
2️⃣ Samajja Dāna – Giving to support entertainments such as dancing, singing, and similar amusements.
3️⃣ Itthi Dāna – Giving women for immoral or wrongful purposes.
4️⃣ Usabha Dāna – Giving bulls for the purpose of breeding cattle.
5️⃣ Citta-kamma Dāna – Giving lust-provoking pictures or images that stimulate sensual desire.

🙏 True merit arises from giving with wisdom, compassion, and pure intention.

🙏 The Buddha's Dhamma Journey ☸️

At the age of 29, Prince Siddhattha renounced worldly life in search of the end of suffering.

At the age of 35, He attained Supreme Enlightenment and became the Buddha.

For the next 45 years, the Blessed One traveled tirelessly across northern India, walking from village to village and town to town, teaching the Dhamma with boundless compassion.

He spent:
• 20 years traveling throughout Magadha.
• The 20th Rains Retreat at Veḷuvana Monastery, offered by King Bimbisāra.
• The following 24 years mainly in Sāvatthī.
• 18 Rains Retreats at Jetavana Monastery.
• 6 Rains Retreats at Pubbārāma Monastery.

The Buddha's life was a journey of wisdom, compassion, and selfless service—guiding countless beings toward the path of liberation.

"Go forth for the welfare and happiness of the many." — The Buddha

🙏 May His teachings continue to illuminate the path to peace and liberation for all beings.

🪷 The Buddha's Teaching (Buddha Desanā) 🪷

The Blessed Buddha first introduced His teaching as the Dhamma and the Brahmacariya (Holy Life), as stated in the famous discourse beginning with "Caratha Bhikkhave Cārikaṃ..." ("Go forth, monks, for the welfare and happiness of the many"). After the establishment of the Vinaya (monastic discipline), it became known as the Dhamma-Vinaya.

The Buddha classified His teaching as the Ninefold Teaching (Navanga Satthu Sāsana), consisting of:

🌼 Sutta
🌼 Geyya
🌼 Veyyākaraṇa
🌼 Gāthā
🌼 Udāna
🌼 Itivuttaka
🌼 Jātaka
🌼 Abbhutadhamma
🌼 Vedalla

These nine categories are not separate books, but different literary forms and modes of presenting the Buddha's teachings.

At the First Buddhist Council, the Dhamma and Vinaya were compiled into the Three Pitakas (Tipiṭaka) and organized into 21 collections. This arrangement was not based on the Ninefold Teaching. Later, the great commentators attempted to relate the Tipiṭaka to these nine categories.

🙏 Study the Dhamma, understand the Dhamma, and live according to the Dhamma. 🙏

🙏 Five Types of Trade to Be Avoided 🙏

The Buddha taught that there are five kinds of trade that lay followers should avoid because they cause harm to oneself or others.

📖 The Five Wrong Trades

1️⃣ Meat Trade (Maṃsa Vāṇijjā) – Trading in meat.
2️⃣ Living Beings Trade (Satta Vāṇijjā) – Trading in living beings.
3️⃣ Weapons Trade (Sattha Vāṇijjā) – Trading in weapons.
4️⃣ Intoxicants Trade (Majja Vāṇijjā) – Trading in intoxicating drinks or substances.
5️⃣ Poisons Trade (Visa Vāṇijjā) – Trading in poisons.

🌿 These teachings remind us to earn our livelihood in ways that do not bring suffering to ourselves or others.

Right Livelihood (Sammā Ājīva) is one of the factors of the Noble Eightfold Path, encouraging an ethical, compassionate, and harmless way of living.

🙏 May we choose livelihoods that promote wisdom, compassion, and the well-being of all beings.
