S. Thomas' Preparatory School is a private Anglican, multi-ethnic, primary and secondary day school for boys ages 5 to 16, located in Kollupitiya in the Colombo District of the Western Province of Sri Lanka, founded as a branch preparatory school of S. The School was founded in the year 1938 by the late William Thomas Keble M. (Oxon), the school's first headmaster. It is governed by the Board of Governors of S. Thomas' College of the Church of Ceylon. The school is amongst the elite schools of Sri Lanka and is affiliated with the three other Thomian schools and colleges administered by the Church of Ceylon. The institution, which commenced with a student population of 95 boys and a staff of seven teachers,
is classified as a private fee levying school and is not at all financially dependent on the government. It is administered by a Board of Governors (established to the S. Thomas' College Board of Governors Ordinance No. 7 of 1930) of which the chairman is the Bishop of Colombo,
The day-to-day activities are taken care by the Headmaster. The school has sectional heads for the Upper, Middle, and Lower schools. The current Headmaster is Rev. Nihal Fernando who was installed in January 2021
The school year has three terms; each is named after a period within the church.
• Lent Term: January to April
• Trinity Term: May to August
• Michaelmas Term: September to December
The student population is in excess of 1000 students, ages 5–16, although the roll has declined from its peak of around 1100 students in the year 2000. The students are from multiple ethnic backgrounds (Sinhala, Tamil and Moor).Currently, over 100 staff members dedicate themselves to teaching the student population. The four main faiths practiced by the students of the school, in descending order of frequency, are Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. The majority of students live in the suburbs of Colombo. The School provides education in the Sinhala and Tamil languages as well as Bi-lingual education up to the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) in conformity with the education policy of the state. English is taught as a second language; all administrative matters are conducted in English. The school comprises an assembly hall, over 50 class rooms, two chapels, faith rooms, two music rooms, two art rooms, two playing field, a basketball court and cafeteria. Thomas' further has separate laboratory facilities for science, electronics, and mechanical technology. House system
Students are allocated into four houses: Abeynaike, Carpenter Garnier, De Saram and Keble. Abeynaike house is named after the first Headmaster of S. Thomas' Preparatory School, Norman Gray Abeynaike. Carpenter-Garnier is named after the sixth Bishop of Colombo, who was Lord Bishop in 1938 when S. Thomas' Preparatory School was founded. De Saram house is named after Canon R. De Saram who was Warden of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia when S. Keble house is named after the Founder, William Thomas Keble. The houses compete against each other in many sports events throughout the year. An athletics championship held each February allows students in each of the houses to compete in athletic events. The official handing over of The J. S. L. Fernando Memorial Room.

The room adjoining the Board Room in the 'Fortrose' dedicated as the 'J.S. L. Fernando Memorial Room', in memory of the longest serving Headmaster of Prep School was officially handed over to the Old Boys' Union to serve as the OBU Secretariat, by Ex officio / Headmaster Rev. Nihal Fernando on Wednesday the 15th August 2022,

Mr. J. S. L. Fernando was instrumental in setting up the Old Boys' Union and the room will be used by the OBU for its administrative activities.
The room will also be used for counselling and to administer the Education Grants Fund.

The desk which was used by Mr. J. S. L. Fernando as Headmaster will be restored by his son, Mr. Nilantha Fernando, and will be the centerpiece of the room.

The Old Boys' Union wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo, & the Headmaster of Prep School Rev. Nihal Fernando for facilitating the setting up of this much needed administrative space for the OBU, thereby ensuring that continued interest is maintained by past Prepites & the participation of the alumni in the progress & development of their alma mater.

S. Thomas' Preparatory School, Kollupitiya is proud to unveil its latest publication, ’80 years of Prep School: 1938-2018’, which chronicles the first eight decades of one of Sri Lanka’s finest schools. The book presents many fascinating stories and previously unpublished images. Important documents unearthed during the research highlight the heroic efforts of our early pioneers and will aid the continuation of the high moral standards that Prep School was founded upon.

As a limited edition, the book will see a single printing cycle of ONLY 300 copies.

The J.S.L. FERNANDO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The S. Thomas' Prep School Class of 86, at the invitation of the Old Boys Union, handed over two fully funded scholarships for the year 2018 / 2019 to the Headmaster Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo this morning. These scholarships are awarded to two deserving students selected by the school administration, on an annual basis and is funded by the Prep Class of 86, in memory of our late Head master Mr. J. S. L. Fernando.
