✨ Genesis 2026 | Birth of a Bond Between Faith and Medicine ✨
On 21st June 2026, the Guild of St. Luke, Saints Cosmas and Damian was privileged to host Genesis 2026 at the St. Joseph Vaz Centre, Colombo, bringing together Catholic doctors and medical undergraduates from medical faculties across Sri Lanka for a day of prayer, learning, fellowship and reflection.
The programme commenced with prayer and an inspiring reflection by Rev. Fr. Freely Muthukudaarachchi, reminding us that medicine is not merely a profession, but a vocation rooted in compassion, service and the healing ministry of Christ.
We were honoured to have Dr. Romanie Fernando deliver an engaging session on the relationship between gametogenesis and organogenesis, encouraging participants to appreciate the dignity and wonder of human life from its very beginning.
One of the highlights of the day was the interactive small-group discussions, where students and doctors explored challenging ethical dilemmas encountered in modern medical practice. Guided by experienced members of the Guild, participants reflected on issues including abortion, trade union action, sexuality, blood transfusion in Jehovah's Witness patients, congenital malformations and other real-life clinical scenarios. The discussions were thoughtful, respectful and deeply enriching.
The programme concluded with Holy Mass, followed by fellowship over lunch, strengthening friendships and building meaningful connections between senior doctors and the next generation of Catholic medical professionals.
Genesis 2026 was more than a single event—it marked the beginning of a journey of formation, mentorship and service. It reminded us that true healing involves not only scientific knowledge, but also faith, conscience, compassion and love for every human person.
