Were the Jews the “Christ-killers”?

Were the Jews the “Christ-killers”?

During World War II, the N**i Party led by Adolf Hitler—responsible for the mass murder of millions of Jews—faced a serious challenge: the majority of Germany’s population was Roman Catholic, and Jesus Christ was a Jew. To gain support and justify the Holocaust before the German public, N**i propaganda promoted the claim that the Jews had crucified Jesus. This false narrative has resurfaced in some circles following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, particularly in response to Christian support for Israel. The question remains: were the Jews truly responsible for the death of Christ?

Historically, Jesus was executed by the Romans, not by the Jewish people as a whole (Matthew 27:26-35, Mark 15:15-25, Luke 23:24-33, John 19:16). Crucifixion was a Roman method of ex*****on, carried out under the authority of Pontius Pilate. While a group of Jewish religious leaders and a limited crowd (Matthew 27:20, Mark 15:11) called for Jesus’ death, this does not implicate the entire Jewish population. The gathering at the praetorium—where Jesus was tried—would have been relatively small, likely numbering only a few hundred people, including Roman officials and guards. At the time, the Jewish population in Judea is estimated to have been around two million. A crowd of roughly 150 individuals cannot reasonably represent an entire people. Therefore, the claim that all Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus—based on the actions of a small group and the betrayal by Judas Iscariot—is not supported by historical evidence.

There's a beautiful sculpture in Milan depicting a cherub touching the crown of thorns with a look of wonder and incomprehension. The cherub cannot understand the agony those thorns represent because it comes from a world untouched by pain. In contrast, Jesus endured the thorns, nails, and cross, offering comfort through His sacrifice, as if saying, "My child, I understand your suffering."

Who Is Truly Great?
(A Devotional on Matthew 18:1-6)

The Playground of Power: The disciples squabbled like children on a dusty afternoon, each jostling for a position of prominence. "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" they asked Jesus, their voices thick with ambition. At that moment, Jesus did something unexpected. He knelt, scooped up a child, and placed him in their midst.

Shifting Sands of Greatness: The disciples, accustomed to measuring worth by worldly standards, must have felt the ground shift beneath their feet. A child, the symbol of vulnerability and dependence, held up as the standard of greatness? Jesus shattered their preconceived notions, revealing a kingdom where power resides not in titles or authority but humility, trust, and open-heartedness.

Childlike Humility: The kingdom of heaven, Jesus declared, belongs to those who "...change and become like little children..." (Matthew 18:3) This isn't a call to childishness, but a challenge to strip away arrogance and self-importance. It's about embracing wonder, trusting fully, and receiving love and grace with open arms. How often do we, burdened by worldly anxieties, forget the playful joy of faith? Today, take a moment to reconnect with your inner child. Laugh heartily, marvel at the simple beauty around you, and let go of the need to control.

Serving the Lowly: True greatness, Jesus reminds us, doesn't scream for attention; it whispers in acts of service. The "lowly position" of a child, often overlooked and marginalized, becomes the gateway to greatness in God's eyes. Look around you today. Who feels invisible, unheard, or belittled? Can you offer a cup of coffee, a listening ear, or a helping hand? In serving the lowly, we mirror the heart of God, who raises the humble and lifts up the downtrodden.

Guiding Little Feet: A chilling warning punctuates Jesus' message: "Whoever causes one of these little ones to stumble, they should be drowned in the depths of the sea with a large millstone around their neck." (Matthew 18:6) Harsh words, but they speak to the gravity of harming the vulnerable. This encompasses not just physical abuse, but any action that could lead them astray from faith, hope, or love. Be a protector of the innocent, a voice against injustice, and a guiding light for those who stumble in the darkness.

The Kingdom Within: As we contemplate this scene, the child nestled in Jesus' arms, let it be a reminder: the kingdom of heaven isn't a distant land, but a reality that begins within us. It flourishes when we embrace childlike humility, uplift the marginalized, and fiercely protect the vulnerable. May we, like Jesus, hold onto the innocence and trust that unlock the door to true greatness.

Reflection:

How can you incorporate childlike wonder and vulnerability into your faith journey?

Who can you serve today, making them feel valued and seen?

What steps can you take to protect the vulnerable and speak up against injustice?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, open our hearts to the childlike humility that unlocks the doors of your kingdom. Help us see the greatness in serving others, particularly those who are often overlooked. Grant us the courage to be a voice for the vulnerable and protect the innocent.

During Pastor Palitha Jayasooriya's sermon, delivered on January 20th, 2023, he shared a captivating illustration that truly piqued my interest. We're all familiar with the well-known story of "Turning Water into Wine" and how some individuals twist it to rationalize their actions. However, what truly astounded me was a fresh perspective: a man who sincerely beseeched the Lord to undo the miracle, requesting that his wine be transformed back into water. And what's even more astonishing? The Lord granted this unique request. This narrative not only challenges our preconceptions but also serves as a poignant reminder of the potency of humility and faith. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Pastor Pali for imparting this enlightening tale!
