MECC - The Middle East Council of Churches MECC - The Middle East Council of Churches is the ecumenical voice of Christians in the Middle East.

The Middle East Council of Churches was inaugurated in May 1974 in Nicosia, Cyprus. It initially contained three 'families' of Christian churches of the Middle East: the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Evangelical Churches. These three were joined in 1990 by the seven Catholic Churches of the region. MECC represents approximately 14 million Christians residing in

14 countries around the region. It is comprised of its core programs which focus on ecumenical relations (both within the Middle East and beyond) and interfaith relations as well as service programs which address the humanitarian crises of the Middle East. اختار البابا لاون الرابع عشر «نزع سلاح التكنولوجيا، وخدمة السلام. السياسة كمسؤولية وقائية» موضوعًا لرسالته في اليوم العالمي الستين للسلام، الذي يُحتفل به في الأول من كانون الثاني 2027. ويسلط الموضوع الضوء على المسؤولية الأخلاقية للعاملين في المجال العام والسياسي، ويدعو إلى صون كرامة الإنسان وبناء السلام، بدءًا من «نزع سلاح التكنولوجيا».

ويأتي اختيار الموضوع في ظل المخاوف المتزايدة من إسناد القرارات العسكرية إلى الذكاء الاصطناعي، مع التذكير بقول البابا: «لا خوارزمية يمكنها أن تجعل الحرب مقبولة أخلاقيًا». كما يشدد الإعلان على الحاجة إلى اتفاقات دولية مشتركة تصون المسؤولية البشرية والمبادئ الإنسانية عندما تكون حياة الإنسان والتعايش السلمي بين الشعوب على المحك.
