During March 12-13, 2026, the CHAMPA Savannakhet - CHAMPA Vat Phou Project, in collaboration with the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and Savannakhet Provincial Department of Culture, and Tourism, organized a heritage awareness and mural restoration educational activity at the old Hor Jack of Vat Taleo Kao. The event was attended by local district and village authorities, along with 60 students, and took place in Taleo Village, Champhone District, Savannakhet Province.

🎯 Key Activities:

- Special Lectures: Presentations by provincial officials and EFEO experts on the meaning and significance of cultural heritage.
- Emergency Salvage and Mural Restoration: Technical exchanges on mural restoration methods led by local and international specialists.
- Community Engagement: Local students and authorities participated in on-site learning to better understand the historical location.

This initiative not only provided technical knowledge but also raised community awareness regarding the value of these cultural treasures, fostering a collective commitment to preserve them for future generations. The next phase of the restoration plan is set to begin in the near future!

A new trail is coming soon to the VatPhou World Heritage Site! ⛰️✨

The Vat Phou World Heritage Division and CHAMPA Project with financial support from AFD, recently implemented an exclusive training session for our upcoming trail: "The Hermit Trails: Tham Hin Suea– Tham Lek – Phou Phe." This specialized program was organized by the ADF (Archaeology & Development Foundation) on 26–27 February 2026. The session brought together 6 local guides from 3 nearby villages (Nong Sa, Sang Khaen, and Vat Luang Kao) and 10 technical officers from the Vat Phou World Heritage Office to prepare a high-quality and meaningful experience for our future visitors.

☀️ Day 1 (Feb 26): Exploring site history, the feasibility of "The Hermit’s Trail," and theoretical lessons from ADF’s successful projects.

🥾 Day 2 (Feb 27): Fieldwork! Our team surveyed the stunning ancient sites of Tham Hin Seua, Tham Lek and Phou Phe.

We are currently finalizing the details to ensure this route is perfect for its official opening soon. Stay tuned! 🚩🙌

A special thank you to the Champasak District Authorities, OCT Champasak and Vat Say Village for inviting the Vat Phou World Heritage Department and the CHAMPA Project to be part of this event. We are proud to support the revival of Champasak’s intangible cultural heritage through the Pha Phavet Procession, held during the annual Boun Phavet (Mahachat Festival) at Ban Wat Say on 21 January 2026..

Boun Phavet is a major merit-making festival held during the fourth lunar month (part of the Heet Sip Song or Lao 12-month traditions). It commemorates the life of Prince Vessantara (Phavet Sandorn), the Buddha's final incarnation before being born as Prince Siddhartha and attaining enlightenment. The core theme is "Mahachati" or the Great Charity/Giving.

The Phavet cloth: is a long scroll of fabric (some can be 20 to 40 meters long) featuring hand-painted illustrations of the Vessantara Jataka, divided into 13 chapters.

The Procession: Carrying the cloth symbolizes the scene where Prince Vessantara and his family travel from the forest back to the city.

The Belief: It is believed that by joining the procession and listening to the recitation of all 13 chapters of the Vessantara story in a single day, one gains immense merit and will be reborn in the era of the next Buddha (Maitreya).

🌟 Looking Ahead: The Vat Phou World Heritage Devision and the CHAMPA Project will continue this initiative with even larger and more colorful events coming soon.

Department of Culture and Tourism, The World Heritage Division in collaboration with the CHAMPA Project, continues its awareness-raising activities regarding the management and conservation of the Vat Phou Champasak World Heritage Site on 19 and 22 DEC 2025. On this occasion, we were delighted to welcome 9 teachers and more than 110 students from Don Talat Secondary School, Champasak District.

Throughout the activity, the students went on a field visit to the actual sites, including the Vat Phou Temple Complex, Hong Nang Sida, and the Vat Phou Museum. They also attended educational lectures by technical experts on history, heritage site management, and the importance of the cultural landscape and architecture of Champasak District. Additionally, there was a fun Q&A activity to win special souvenirs.

Our team will continue organizing these great activities at Phon Ngam Secondary School and Champasak Secondary School very soon.
