Churches Unite in Signalling Commitment to Family Values

Following the mass rally of church and community members last Sunday (11 September), organizers thanked those who turned out and said their presence signalled that the church was not prepared to abandon the biblical values that have been, in their view, the “bedrock of these Islands.”

An important achievement of the rally, said Bishop Nicholas Sykes, immediate past chair of the Cayman Ministers’ Association (CMA) and a member of the initiative’s Joint Planning Committee, “is that for the first time the churches have united in taking a public stand and have “succeeded in starting a serious public conversation around the themes of law and values, how law can be corrupted, and from where values are derived.”

In line with that, in his remarks following the rally, Joint Planning Committee Chair, Pastor Shion O’Connor, said a significant achievement was the message that it sent to Government and the community that the church was committed to a position of biblical family values. It was encouraging, he said, to hear the Government’s stated position at the rally despite the concerns that had been raised by last month’s decision by the Immigration Appeals Tribunal.

Pastor Alson Ebanks, senior pastor of the Church of God Chapel, also identified the interplay between law and values in his presentation. The values espoused in our society, he said, determine “what laws our legislators make, how our courts interpret those laws, and how you and I determine what is right or wrong for us ethically and morally.”

And those values are the foundation of a strong society: “In a nutshell, we (the leaders and the people) determine how strong the overall structure of a nation is by how strong the foundation is—and values form that foundation. To strengthen these foundations, it will take us all working together.” He called upon all Christians to make “an all-out commitment to follow the Bible as the authoritative source of those values that contribute to the emotional, physical, spiritual and social well-being of individuals and nations.”

To set the stage for what is hoped to be a continuing public conversation about values and the law, three keynote speakers, Pastor Alson Ebanks, senior pastor of the Church of God Chapel, Walkers Road; Dr. Brendan Bain, public health specialist; and constitutional law specialist Mr. David Gibbs III presented to a capacity crowd at the Lions Centre. They focused on the broad topics of family values and the Christian ethic and the law. Making a brief presentation at the end of the rally along similar lines was Ms Philippa Davies, advocacy officer of the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society. The tone for the evening’s agenda was set by brief addresses by Pastor O’Connor as well as Pastor Torrance Bobb, who is the chair of the CMA and a member of the Joint Planning Committee.

Speaking following the rally on behalf of the Joint Planning Committee, Pastor O’Connor, President of the Cayman Islands Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, said: “I thank the thousands of Caymanians and residents of these islands who turned out in impressive numbers at the Lions Centre—and countless others who watched online—for their support and commitment to the cause of preserving biblical family values in the interest of our current and future generations.”

The unity of the churches in this initiative was symbolised throughout the evening by the various musical presentations. The opening praise and worship segment was led by the First Baptist Choir under the baton of Pastor David Jorge. That interdenominational tone continued throughout, with the Church of God Children’s Choir, spoken work and rap artistes Pauze Entertainment from the Baptist church, saxophonist Junior Hinds, the Adventist church’s Iserve youth group’s chorale, and junior and senior mass choirs composed of members from the various churches.

One highlight of the evening was Attorney Gibbs’ presentation in which he counselled the churches to set out a statement of faith clearly defining their position on biblical beliefs with respect to marriage, morality and human s*xuality. He said that church and other leaders must hold themselves accountable to these standards.

Dr. Bain focused largely on positive parenting values, urging parents not to neglect their responsibilities to teach wholesome values to their children. He warned against promoting pleasure and fun of all kinds outside of the boundaries of a proper set of values.

The public health specialist warned, also, against the dangers of early s*xual initiation and promiscuity, with their links to s*xually transmitted diseases and certain cancers.

Meanwhile, in his presentation, Pastor Ebanks appealed to everyone to avoid a narrow view of the issues impacting the family and society:

“[This] very public agenda to re-define marriage, family and s*xual morality [reflects] but one of the dangers facing the Caymanian family. Another very real danger is that our children are targets for the s*x trade, pe******ia and child abuse. We must stand as one people and speak with one voice against all these attacks on the family. And we must do it now—because when it comes to our children, the future is now!” he said, referencing the slogan for the rally – “The future Is Now: Preserving Values for a Better Tomorrow.”

Pastor Alson Ebanks traced these threats to family and society to the Christian notion of the “fall” of man and the emergence of sin. He spoke of its impact on humanity, and stressed the Christian duty to extend love and compassion to everyone—all humanity— who all accordingly suffer from the ill-effects of the original sin.

“To model biblical family values,” Pastor Ebanks said, “means that we must show loving compassion to those who struggle in every area of their lives, including persons who are conflicted about their s*xual identity and those who struggle to control their s*xual desires and fail to live up to God’s moral standards.”

Pastor Ebanks continued: “Compassion does not condemn… but compassion provides practical solutions,” identifying some of the areas of need as “single parent families, abused spouses, neglected children, victims of s*xual abuse and those in bo***ge to s*xual sins.”

Shortly before the close of the rally, Ms Davies spoke briefly about initiatives of organizations such as hers in Jamaica in countering international efforts, including from US President Barak Obama and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, to undermine laws and policies protecting the family in that country. Ms Davies called upon the Cayman society to stand firm on God’s design for marriage, s*x, and the family, and to align themselves with other regional agencies working to curb international influences.

She said that policies that are being changed in Jamaica due to incursions from international forces have included school’s s*x education curriculum impacting values relating to s*xuality.

Reflecting a concern to avoid similar occurrences here in Cayman, Pastor O’Connor said he was pleased about the public expression of commitment of both the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition to fight any international pressure to change Cayman Islands’ laws with respect to marriage. “We thank both leaders for their public stand and commitment to the values of the people of these islands,” he said.

In their guest presentations, Premier Alden McLaughlin and the Leader of the Opposition Mckeeva Bush both affirmed that, from the perspective of their political parties, marriage between a man and a woman would continue to be legally and constitutionally supported. The Premier said that he had been assured by Governor Helen Kilpatrick that the UK would not pressure for change.

The Premier nevertheless stressed an equal “obligation under the law and the constitution … to ensure that all people, but especially any minority group, regardless of differences, receive fair treatment and respect under the law and the constitution of our Islands.”

Commenting, Pastor O’Connor said that the community in general and the church in particular are fully committed to the Christian exhortation of “loving our neighbours as ourselves,” regardless of their religious, philosophical or identified s*xual orientations.”
“An important aspect of our rally was to communicate to all that we are all sinners and that Christ died that we should all have redemption,” Pastor O’Connor said.

Speaking following the rally, Pastor Bobb similarly underscored the importance of the guidance afforded by Christian teachings: “We are convinced that as we embrace the teachings of scripture as the final authority in matters of spirituality, morality and conduct, that we will individually and collectively have a better tomorrow.”

"I firmly believe that children need structure. They need to know exactly what to expect, what is allowed, what is not allowed, and what will happen when they disobey.

Proverbs 22:6 -“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

I’ve seen a lot of different ‘lists’ of family rules. I even tried using the one that the Duggar Family uses for Character Qualities. But that just didn’t seem to stick after the first week.

Other lists of rules didn’t have a biblical backing or I disagreed with some of the rules.

I decided the easiest thing would be to come up with my own list of Family Rules. I wanted it to be based on Biblical Truth. That was important to me because I don’t want my kids to think I’m just making rules up for their discomfort and to kill their fun. I’m following God’s commands and I expect them to also."

The motto for the 11 September event and other activities, “The Future is Now: Preserving Values for a Better Tomorrow”, reflects a desire of Cayman churches to preserve Bible-based values upon which the Cayman Islands was founded and to which the Islands owes its present prosperity and success.

Who is involved
The overall initiative is being sponsored and driven by a group of Cayman Islands churches, spearheaded by the Cayman Ministers’ Association, the Adventist and other churches.

Youth organisations in the churches are collaborating in the effort. Young people are vested in this effort since they will inevitably bear the burden from the impacts of today’s challenges to our values in the decades ahead.

As youth, they will soon be passing on their values to the next generation, as they play, live, work, create value, worship, and raise their families.

Why now
The Cayman church is concerned that future generations retain these values and principles in every sphere of their lives.

The church is becoming increasingly sensitive to the fact that the values and influences which shape the future state of societies worldwide, including in the Cayman Islands, are being framed today in ways that are creating shifts in our value systems.

The church’s concern is largely motivated by its view that adherence to Bible-based values provide a strong basis for the psychological and social health, stability, and security of children. This is where all the initiatives in this drive are focused – on the positive values of bible-based values to the family and society.

The church underscores that it is concerned about all lifestyle choices and behaviours that run counter to Bible-based values and positive outcomes for families and societies. These include departures that may occur within the context of conventional marriage unions and other heteros*xual unions as well as those involving so-called alternative lifestyles.

In taking note of such trends, the church is calling for the involvement, conversation and investment from everyone, especially from among those who hold convictions that values based upon Bible principles are the ideal platform for the wholesome thriving of any society.

How the church is approaching its response
The church believes that it has a responsibility to take a stand with respect to all behaviours that are not in keeping with Bible-based standards. As the Biblical Jude, brother of Jesus’ disciple James, exhorted the brethren of the day to “contend” with those who are deviating from Bible-based standards, the church believes it has an urgent responsibility to guide diligently those who are failing to observe Bible-based standards.

The church is very concerned, however, that its initiatives, while based on Bible principles, must be deeply rooted in, and characterized by, love and compassion to all. This is indeed an important an aim as any other.

The first such effort towards these goals is that of raising awareness about trends, Bible-based standards, Bible dictates on love, compassion and non-judgmental attitudes, and related concerns. This drive will begin with an island-wide rally for all interested persons on 11 September, at 5:00 pm, at the Lions Centre.

That event will be preceded and followed by a multi-media public awareness-raising programme and activities that will continue into the foreseeable future.

The overall initiative is intentional, has been carefully thought out, and is envisaged as being long-term. Representatives from participating churches have been jointly deliberating for many months.

Events and activities:
• September 11 Rally: The key message will be that everyone, especially Christians, must maintain awareness of –

Let’s be honest. When we begin our parenting journey, we don’t have a clue. (Please tell me it wasn’t just me.) Not only did I not have a clue to start with, but I also didn’t have enough functioning brain cells to get a clue on my own. (Sleep deprivation anyone?) For example, my husband and I proba...

When we strive to get our children to “pray the prayer” we risk making them our converts, rather than allowing God to make them His. How young is too young? God knows. True conversion is a work of the Spirit, not a work of the parent’s will.

Leading your children to Jesus? True conversion doesn't result from "the magic prayer". It's a work of the Holy Spirit but parents play a critical role.

Overseas and Local Experts Collaborate on Family-Life Thrust

For the first time, churches in the Cayman Islands are collaborating on devising strategies for the preservation and promotion of values that they perceive important to the present and future wellbeing of the Islands. Two overseas experts in their fields and a local theologian are slated for the 11 September island-wide rally taking place at the Lions Centre on the subject of Bible-based family values.

The rally, with its motto, “The Future Is Now: Preserving Values for a Better Tomorrow,” is aimed at explaining and promoting Bible-based teachings, both from the point of view of empathy and compassion and adherence to principles governing daily living. The 11 September, 5 pm, high-energy service, a collaborative venture of Cayman’s churches, will include interactive panel discussions and featured musical items, in addition to presentations by the three keynote speakers.

The event comes with high hopes that it will coalesce over the long term into a practical, broad-based, pro-family-life agency with related training progammes.

The Lions Centre launch is being designed for “all citizens that care about the future generations, particularly with respect to defining what constitutes a family,” said one of the keynote speakers, Mr. David Gibbs III, an internationally known constitutional attorney who has been engaged in defending and protecting free-speech rights of ordinary citizens across the United States for almost 25 years. Mr. Gibbs is an American attorney and graduate of Duke University.

Mr. Gibbs’ presentation will aim to frame the historical and current legal debate on the definition and nature of the family, and will discuss the way forward in navigating today’s increasingly diverse perspectives. Mr. Gibbs said: “If you give people good information, they can make good decisions, and that’s what we want to do. The outcome would be healthy discussion and debate that will positively benefit the Islands for generations to come.”

In addition to Mr. Gibbs, the two other keynote speakers are Dr. Brendan Bain and Pastor Alson Ebanks. Dr. Bain is a medical doctor who is a founding director and first board chair of Family Life Ministries, a thirty-three-year-old, non-denominational Christian organization in Jamaica dedicated to promoting regional stable and healthy family life practices based on the teachings of the Bible. Dr. Bain will be sharing information from medical and public health standpoints. Dr. Bain’s medical specialisation is internal medicine, infectious diseases and public health, and he has served as a full professor in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies.

Local student of philosophy and theology, and graduate of Anderson University, Indiana, USA, Pastor Ebanks, is a senior pastor of the Church of God Chapel Walkers Road for the past 25 years. Pastor Alson will speak on the framework for promoting and preserving Biblical family values, and will seek to call the Christian community back to a firm commitment to follow the Bible as the best guide to preserving those values.

In Christian ministry for the past 43 year, Pastor Ebanks has authored the position paper in support of Biblical marriage for the Church of God Chapel, a document that has been endorsed and published by the Cayman Ministers’ Association (CMA).

Addressing the reason behind the rally and the broader initiative from his perspective, keynote speaker Gibbs said that as an observer of legal and constitutional trends, he has been concerned about some major shifts in the western world. And these viewpoints are having an ever widening reach, he said: “No part of the world is immune from these influences because we live in a global community.”

Dr. Bain, too, noted increasing pressures and said that it could not be ignored that “a number of individuals, international groups and governments are exerting pressure on our communities to accept s*xual practices that have not been previously accepted in most Caribbean communities.” Further, he said, “There are some persons and organisations that have dedicated themselves to working in this area.”

Pastor Ebanks stressed that the rally would be about many “real issues that are … extensive.” These “real” issues, he said, extend to marriage, husband-wife relationships, s*xual morality as a whole, family roles and responsibilities, and “how adherence to these in the context of Biblical values are good for the society as a whole.”

In his presentation, also, he would be outlining the need for Christians to reach out in the attitude of love and charity modelled by Christ to everyone, regardless of lifestyles or beliefs.

As to perhaps more tangible impacts of the rally, as CMA founding member, past chair, and currently second-term vice chair, Pastor Ebanks said he hoped one of the more long-range initiatives that would come out of the rally is a “pro-family NGO that will develop and execute strategies for the promotion and preservation of healthy families.”

This umbrella organisation, said Pastor Ebanks, who for many years has led in prison ministries among other community service activities, could bring together and support many of the numerous community services initiatives in which individual churches are currently engaged. These include counselling services, legal advice, social welfare activities, and more.

“The churches have long wanted to collaborate on various community outreach activities, and now that we are working together, we are anticipating many tangible benefits to come to the Cayman community over the longer term,” Pastor Ebanks said.
