Mid-Week Encouragement -- June 2
"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God." Psalm 42:1
How is it that a deer pants for water?
If you've ever seen deer in the wild, they are usually quite skittish; as animals of prey, they are nervous, jumpy, and constantly alert to their surroundings. They run off quickly at the sound of slight noises, so they tend to do a lot of sprinting throughout the day. The problem is that deer do not really have sweat glands, so in order to cool their bodies throughout the day, they have to pant (like dogs do with their tongues out). If it's an especially hot season or a deer is being tracked by a predator, it has a singular mindset: get to a water source to quench its thirst.
Much more than a deer longing for water, we see the psalmist declare that his very soul longs for God as his enemy pursues him. He knows that the Lord is the only one in whom he can seek refuge, the only one who will save him.
Are you running toward the Lord today? Are you longing for him? Are you weary? Seek him and let your soul be satisfied in the comfort, the encouragement, the refreshment, and the peace that only he can provide.
