*John Huss, the Church reformer who died singing while being burnt on a stake, refused to renounce his preaching and said, "In the truth of the gospel which I preached, I die willingly and joyfully today."*

*Millions of Christians have died for Christ; the tragedy of universal Christian suffering is a reality. This is because the world is generally hostile to the gospel and believers.*

*Suffering is part of the Christian life and should not come as a surprise. Rather, view it as a test of faith, knowing that you are not alone. God can use such adverse conditions to refine and mature us.*

*Christian suffering could reveal how truly committed we are to our faithful God. Suffering develops our character, brings us closer to God and teaches us to lean on Him.*

*Suffering comes in different forms, but the Bible says, "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18). Are you slandered, rejected or imprisoned? Take courage, you are not far from home.*

πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–πŸ“–

The book of John gave us an interesting story of an unnamed boy (lad) who gave all he had to Jesus. *"Oh! Mummy, I thought only Jesus should give to His friends like me,"* a young boy said to his mother. *"No, my boy, the command from Jesus to all His friends is, 'Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again'" (Luke 6:38)* the mother replied.

Giving to God and others should be done willingly. Like the boy in our passage today, we should willingly surrender all we have to Jesus who gave up everything for us. *What can I give to Jesus, you may ask? The first thing to give to Jesus is your heart and life. After this, you can give your time to clean the church, offer money from your pocket money (not school fees), sing in the choir, preach the gospel to others, visit other friends of Jesus, teach others some academic subjects, etc.* Examples of those who gave to the Lord were Abraham, David, Nehemiah, Hannah, etc.

*Do not think what you have is too little. The Lord requires cheerfulness and faithfulness in our giving. Hence, you should not give grudgingly. When you give willingly, there will be abundant blessings upon you and your family. However, you must first surrender your life to Him to cleanse you with His blood. This is the only way your giving will be acceptable to God.*

*LORD OF ALL TIMES*

TEXT: *HEBREWS 13:1-8*

KEY VERSE: _*"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever"*_ (HEBREWS 13:8).

Nothing has remained constant all through the ages. Not even the earth has remained the same since its creation. Seasons have been known to change the nature and quality of things. This confirms the saying that the only thing permanent in life is change.

This, however, is not true concerning our Lord. Times and seasons may change but the Lord remains the same all through the ages. Because the Lord is unchanging, His promises and precepts for His people remain the same too. The desirability of marriage and family life is still the same. So is the purity and sanctity of its vows. The responsibilities of believers towards one another remains unchanging no matter what changes may take place in world economies and policies. Believers can also rest assured in the ever abiding presence of God, His protection and sufficiency irrespective of the troubles and fears in the world.

Since the Lord is unchanging, believers today ought not to worry about the different changes taking place in the world. Failing world economies, increased state of insecurity, the outbreak of strange diseases and infections, the rapid increase of knowledge, etc., should not undermine the faith of the believer at all. God's word and power are still much relevant and at work even in these last days.

Moreover, the Christian faith, beliefs and hope are not getting out of circulation or becoming irrelevant; rather, Christianity is more relevant today than ever before. This is because after this world has faded away, all kingdoms collapse and knowledge fail, the Lord Jesus Christ with His redeemed Church will ever remain the same.

*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY*: Jesus is the same as ever.

*C. H. Spurgeon said, "Nothing can damn a man but his own righteousness; nothing can save him but the righteousness of Christ." A righteous person is someone who has been cleansed from his former sins and now lives by God's holy standard.*

*Examples of the righteous in Bible times who enjoyed God's riches are Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Job, Moses and King David. Despite his sufferings and adversities, Job upheld his integrity and God blessed him abundantly (Job 1:8 and 42:7-8).*

*Abraham was called the friend of God, and he was the richest man of his time. Like Job and Abraham, we are to obey God's commands, possess inner purity and remain separated from the world, yet showing Christ's love to all.*

*God's righteousness is obtained through Jesus Christ. His atoning blood takes away our sins, and through Him God sees us as righteous. Henceforth, we seek His guidance and approval before taking actions. The privileges of the righteous include access to God's blessings here and in eternity.*

Jesus tells a story of a man who had two sons. One day, the younger son decided that he wanted to leave home to go enjoy himself in a faraway country. So, he went to his father to ask for his own portion of the family's investment (money). His father gave it to him, and he left.

Soon, he spent all the money on partying and useless things. He became lonely, miserable and hungry. He then decided to take a job of feeding pigs just to get food to eat. One day, as he fed the pigs, he thought *"my father's servants have plenty of food, and here am I starving, I will arise and go back to my father and ask for forgiveness."*

Surprisingly, the father had missed his son. So, when he saw him coming back home, he ran to him, hugged and kissed him. It was a loving and warm welcome. The son said to him, *"Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son."*

But his father forgave and received him back. He told his servants to bring out a fine robe for his son, organised a big party, and they began to celebrate. The father received his son back as one that was dead in sins and trespasses and is now awake to a new life.

*If you will come to Jesus now, He will receive you and make you His friend. Then heaven will rejoice because of you.*

*SHOW GODLY SORROW*

_It is advisable you read the text first_

πŸ“œTEXT:LAMENTATIONS 5:7-22πŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation" (LAMENTATIONS 5:19).*_

At the breach of God's law a triangular line is drawn. The first stroke represents the transgression. Next is another stroke symbolising the punishment for sin. A third line comes up at the bottom to complete the triangle, standing for man's reaction to the second line. How does the punished person respond? Is the sinner accepting guilt and showing godly sorrow? Or is it a litany of lamentation and accusations against heaven?

Judah suffered the penalty of captivity in Babylon following their idolatrous practices that contravened the commandments of the Lord. The story of the untold misery they experienced as the Chaldean invaders overwhelmed and razed Jerusalem, and took away the descendants of Jacob is vividly captured in the book of Lamentations by Jeremiah the prophet. He speaks of "terrible famine" and "the mountain of Zion, which is desolate."

However, it is not all a narrative of complaints about the sorrow that befell the people of Judah. There is the more important step of realisation of the merciful Lord who forgives when the remorseful sinner runs to Him. He is the Lord who "remainest forever...from generation to generation." There is a repentant plea to Him, "Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old."

God indeed answered the supplication of the Jews as He raised up the Medo-Persian Empire against their Babylonian captors. They were delivered back to their homeland. He did not utterly reject His people. Today, the Lord is watching out for those who, after going astray, would humbly retrace their steps into His waiting arms like the prodigal son.

Abram was born and raised in a country known as Ur of the Chaldees. There he married Sarai, had servants and was an established and prosperous farmer. When he was seventy-five years old, he heard God calling him to leave the country of his birth.

God called him to leave where he had been for 75 years to an unknown land. Did Abram obey? Yes, he did. His obedience to God's call opened the door of great blessings to him. He eventually had uncountable number of descendants.

*Today, the Lord is calling you to also get up and go. It is not to go out of your parents' home like Abram did, but to get up from sleeping, playfulness and laziness to go into your community and preach the gospel to every creature.*

The world is filled with sinners and the end is at hand. Jesus will come any moment from now to take His friends to heaven. If you fail to go and preach, many sinners will remain in their sins and miss the rapture. *The call is urgent, therefore you must promptly obey as Abram did.*

Martin Luther said, "If we consider the greatness and the glory of the life we shall have when we have risen from the dead, it would not be difficult at all for us to bear the concerns of this world...".

Despite his advanced age and the challenge of being childless while he and his old wife, Elisabeth, served the Lord as a "righteous" and "blameless" couple, Zacharias the priest was still at his duty post in the temple. He left the matter of barrenness at home as he had always done and "executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course." The passage under review reveals how the Lord rewarded their faithfulness.

God visited the old man with gladdening news while he was attending to his work, not while grieving over his lack of children or planning to send Elisabeth packing in order to bring another woman who would have the fruit of the womb. To attract heaven's attention concerning what they were passing through, Zacharias and Elisabeth remained unmoved in God's service, until the Lord sent His angel to tell him, "thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son."

Answer to prayers over our troubles does come when we are neck-deep in the work the Lord assigns to us. He expects us to work and resist the temptation to bring in our carnal emotions into His work. This means staying with the Lord always despite seeming setbacks, embarrassments, losses, and ridicule. At the end of the day, these would all amount to nothing compared to the spiritual and physical rewards the believer receives from God.

*Prophet Elijah in our Bible text prayed fervently and perseveringly in the midst of an economic crisis caused by the sin of Israel, and God answered him. Elijah prayed seven times for rain to come, and it did.*

*According to Oldham, "Prayer does not consist in battering the walls of heaven for personal benefits or the success of our plans. Rather, it is the committing of ourselves for the carrying out of His purposes. It is a telephone call to headquarters for orders. It is not bending God's will to ours, but our will to God's. In prayer, we tap vast reservoirs of spiritual power whereby God can find fuller entrance into the hearts of men." No wonder that the prayer of Elijah turned Israel back to God!*

*Passionate prayer therefore involves being faithful, committed and diligent to realise that which glorifies God. Whether it is a prayer of thanksgiving, petition, intercession or consecration, it should proceed from a fervent heart full of faith. So, pray for yourself, family and Church, but let it come from a pure heart with clean hands.*

This means they were pure in their body and heart. They were not careless like Dinah the daughter of Jacob who exposed herself to immorality by befriending the unbelieving daughters of the land. They were chaste, sanctified, righteous and holy virgins who prophesied to the glory of God.

*THE JOY OF A FREE CONSCIENCE*

TEXT: *JOB 11:6-20*

KEY VERSE: _*"If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles. Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away"*_ (JOB 11:14, 16).

The story was told by a famous man of God about a lady that thought her sins were too great for God to forgive. She had lost her mother at a tender age and had gone to live with her eldest sister whom she regarded as mother. But when the sister went to deliver her last baby, Satan struck as she fell into the sin of fornication with her sister's husband. All attempts to free herself from that relationship was frustrated by the man who threatened to reveal all to her sister. Even though she got married later and left that home, the guilt was overwhelming. But to the glory of God, when she eventually opened up to Christ and received His mercy and pardon, the joy of salvation and a free conscience flooded into her soul. When her husband who was nearby heard it, he rushed into the counselling room into the warm embrace of his liberated wife.

Zophar, one of the friends of Job who had initially come to comfort him but later turned an accuser, believed that Job was suffering for his sins and that God *"exacteth of [Job] less than [his] iniquity deserveth"*. He asserted that man cannot by searching find God who is beyond his understanding. He then counselled Job to prepare his heart, stretch his hands towards God and put iniquity far from him so that his life will receive a refreshing.

Truly, sin is a burden. It brings guilt and condemnation, fear and uncertainty. Though these sayings do not actually apply to Job who was righteous before God, the general application is true. The conscience is given to man to police and *"arrest"* him against wrongdoing. But when people continually ignore and quieten the demands of the conscience, it becomes less assertive, weak and seared. No matter how evil had affected the conscience, Jesus heals all hearts and clears all guilt.

*THOUGHT FOR THE DAY*: A free conscience is a release from bo***ge.

Tracy started running here and there calling for help. *"Call 911 please,"* she cried. Within five minutes, the ambulance arrived and conveyed Dammy to the hospital.

She was however lucky to live to tell the story of her foolish action. She realized afterward that she should have resisted the temptation to fall for Tracy's offer to taste hard drugs. She then remembered all the word of God she had learnt, she surrendered her life to Christ and vowed never to follow bad friends and their tricks.

God had given a specific and direct instruction and warning to Adam and Eve concerning the fruit of the tree in the midst of the garden. Suddenly, the serpent appeared on the scene to trick them to disobey God. They yielded to the trick, and here we are today bearing the result of their fall.

There are still many *"trickish serpents"* in the world today. They are going about luring children into immorality, consumption of hard drugs, smoking, bad gangs, violence, po*******hy and other evil things.

*WITNESSING TO THE TRUTH*

_It is advisable you read the text first_

πŸ“œTEXT:1 JOHN 1:1-9πŸ“œ

πŸ”‘πŸ“–```KEY VERSE:``` _*"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ" (1 JOHN 1:3).*_

During court sessions, witnesses are usually called to testify for, or against someone in an on-going case. Those witnesses are expected to state the truth as they know it: what they had seen, or heard or believed to be true. As in the secular, so it is also in the spiritual. Christ had told His disciples "...and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

In our text, Apostle John explains what they had seen as followers of Christ. They had heard from Him the words of life and even "handled" Him. He was manifested so that men can have fellowship with Him and with the Father as the disciples did. He therefore enjoined men to come to share in that fellowship.

The coming of Christ to the world to undo all the evil the fall of Adam brought upon mankind marked a turning point in the history of the world and a new beginning for humanity. His ministry was embedded with preaching, teaching and healing, which brought salvation from sin, cure, deliverance from satanic oppressions and hope for the hopeless.

His death and resurrection broke the power of Satan and brought justification to all that believe. John was a beneficiary of these great things; so, he was in a position to invite others to experience true salvation from sin. Satan comes to steal, to kill and to destroy but Jesus has come to give life in abundance. He gives rest to those who are labouring and under heavy burdens. He gives eternal life to those who believe on Him (John 5:27, 28). Like John, we are to witness about Christ and His coming kingdom.

*God in His mighty power miraculously saved Israel from Pharaoh and his charging army by parting the Red Sea for Israel to pass through. He then brought the sea back to its original position and the enemies were drowned in the sea. This great deliverance inspired the first song written in the Bible.*

*In a celebration of praise, the Israelites spent time praising and worshipping God for His salvation, mighty power and deliverance. Nothing in the song mentioned Moses as a leader who led them out of slavery, rather all praises went to God.*

*God who parted the Red Sea is the One who will make a way for you. When He does something great for you, the instrument used should not be the focus of your testimony and praise, rather it should be God Almighty.*

*Our testimonies of victory and triumph over sin, Satan, sicknesses, failures and other life's battles, show the unbelieving world that God is real and mighty to save. This draws them to Christ. Make sure you are born again so that God can visit you in a mighty way.*

On the sixth day of creation, God made Adam. He did not make him the way He did with His other creations like trees, flowers, and many kinds of animals, He made him in a special way. God made Adam in His own image. He breathed into him His own breath, and Adam became a living being.

To show that Adam was special, He made him to have dominion and rule over all other creatures. It is wonderful to know that of all the living and non-living things God created, only Adam was made in His image. He could talk to God, be creative, love and feel the need to be loved.

You are the offspring of Adam, you are specially made too. When God made you, He placed His Spirit inside you so that you will live for ever and ever. *God has made everything beautiful in its time.*

*You are part of God's beautiful creation. This is the reason you must always remember that God made you for a special purpose. He desires that you know Him, do His will, serve Him faithfully, and at the end live with Him in heaven forever.*

*If you want His purpose fulfilled in your life, talk to Him now. Whenever you pray, your spirit reaches out to God, which makes Him very happy. Animals and other things cannot do that because they do not have a spirit. It is the Spirit of God in you that makes you so special.*
