The first commandment forbids replacing God with another god. The second forbids remaking the true God into a form we can understand, approve, and control. Before giving either command, however, God declares, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” Grace comes before obligation. Israel did not obey to become redeemed; they obeyed because God had already redeemed them.

Some have reduced God to a protector of our culture, nation, denomination, or political ideology. Others have filtered out his holiness until he has become a gentle affirmation of whatever we already desire.

The second commandment calls us to lay down every manufactured version of God.
