Girls' Friendly Society, Korea

Girls' Friendly Society, Korea The Girls’ Friendly Society (GFS) is an international non-profit organization affiliated with the Anglican Church for girls and young women.

The Girls Friendly Society (GFS) was officially founded, within the Anglican Church, in 1875 in England by Mary Elizabeth Townsend to offer spiritual and physical support and friendship to girls and young women who left home and had no local support especially in “at risk” situations. At the beginning the GFS provided accommodations to many working-class country girls who left home to take up urba

n employment and helped them find jobs; and then it started offering them training courses to increase their employability, ante- and post-natal advice, parenting, and etc. Currently, there are 22 member countries in the GFS. Every three years, representatives of 22 countries meet at a World Council, held in the country of the World President, and a World Project is selected for the coming three years. www.gfsworld.org

The GFS in Korea was established in 1965 as the World Project of the 5th GFS World Council in Japan. Since its establishment, the GFS Korea has continued supporting women at risk situations and the disadvantaged in our society. In 2008, the GFS Korea hosted the 19th GFS World Council in Seoul. At the World Council the ‘U-mul-ga’ Project, providing support female North Korean defectors and their family, was selected as one of the 2008 World projects and it is still on. Currently, there are 19 branches running across the country and about 500 members are actively involved in its programmes and projects. Notice: GFS Korea Leadership monitors this site and will remove any inappropriate comments we believe undermine the spirit of this site - which is to provide GFS Korea members and sponsors, past and present, with a forum to share information, take pride in what we do and to support our efforts to secure the future of GFS Korea.

Greetings from Korea.

I'd like to share the news about the Women's Mission Center in Korea and some photos of it's Blessing Ceremony.

We started that project in 1995 and finalized by purchasing a small house in 2016. However it is not a completion but a beginning of New Era of women's mission in Korea. Not only GFS members but also Mother's Union and others those who do not belong to any women's group prayed and contributed to help women's mission center making for 21 years. This is a victory of women in the Anglican Church of Korea. We thank our Lord who lead us to continue this mission for a long time. Finally we made it to put our dreams into practice.

Sunday 4th September 2016, the Anglican Church of Korea Women’s Mission Center had a grand opening ceremony. Some 300 guests from in and out of Korean Anglican Church took part in the memorable Blessing Service officiated by the Most Revd K. Paul Kim.

While some guests admired the lovely building and its surrounding, others their memories of last 20 year-long efforts to establish the Center. Many congratulatory messages were read including one from The Revd Terrie Robinson, Director for Women in Church & Society and the Anglican Church of Japan.

Everyone who came prayed for that the Center will be the place for Anglican women’s solidarity work, prayer, training, education, sharing and caring.

The Center took a long time and much effort to be established, but it will need much more support and prayers not only from the Anglican Church of Korea but also from world GFS and whole Anglican Communion.

With thanks,

Ruth Choi, Korea
World President 2005-2008
