Samhwasa
The mountain Dutasan has long straddled the region between the towns of Donghae and Samcheok and has been revered as this region’s Mother Mountain. Therefore, the local people believed that the vital energy from the mountain was the root of their lives. For more than a thousand years, the temple Samhwasa, in the Muneung valley of Dutasan, has spread the Buddha-Dharma and held an important place deep in the hearts of the local people.

There are a few legends related to Samhwasa’s foundation, but the most reliable one says that it was founded during the reign of Shilla Queen Seondeok (642 C.E.) by Precepts Master Ven. Jajang and was originally called Heukryeondae. The current name Samhwasa comes from when King Taejo, the founder of Goryeo Dynasty, reunified the Later Three Kingdoms in the 10th century, and means “The three (Sam) kingdoms were united (Hwa) as one.”

In 1907, Samhwasa was largely destroyed by the invading Japanese army and few original temple buildings remain. However, the temple does still possess two important cultural properties. The first is an iron Buddha statue that was made between the 7th and 9th centuries C.E. The second is a three story stone pagoda, which dates from before the mid 9th century C.E. The iron Buddha, in particular, was first thought to be a representation of the Medicine Buddha, but after studying the inscription, was discovered to be Nosana Buddha.

Samhwasa’s Templestay Program

Samhwasa has a unique Templestay program called A E I O U(我愛利五友), or Love Myself and Help Five Friends. Participants in the program learn how to love themselves and then, having discovered how to do that, imagine how they can help five friends. After resolving to change their life in a particular direction, participants then write out their personal vow and loudly recite it every morning in order to actualize it in their life and continue the process of awakening. This program has received a lot of positive response from participants because it gives the chance to turn your attention within and reflect on yourself, instead of only focusing on the outside world.

Samhwasa is also proud that during its Templestay program, participants can hike up to Yongchu waterfall or the Gwanuman hermitage, thereby truly getting a chance to appreciate the beauty of Muneung Valley. Along the hiking paths, one highlight is the Shinseon boulder, near Gwanumam hermitage, from which you can see all the mountains around the Muneung valley at one time. Samhwasa’s basic Templestay program is for three days, but a shorter two day program is avail

Introduce Temple stay in Jinkwansa.

Tranquil mountain, SAM-KAK Mt., though it is the same mountain, but differs in its appearances every time you look at it. Depending on the weather, depending on the seasons' change, depending on the angles of view, depending on the viewer's state of mind, it varies considerably.

Although The teachings of the Buddha do not change, but its way of approaching us is expressed in various forms according to the current of time, the objects, and various other conditions.

Now we are in a position to draw another epoch in the traces of millennial history.

In keeping with the demands of the times, leaving behind Buddhism only hoping that people would visit Buddha into the deep mountains, we have opened a different kind of pseudo-sacred history to the cyber world so that many people could easily be in touch with Buddha's teachings in daily life.

Hopefully, this cyber platform will become a world of Buddha where many people can approach freely to the teaching of Buddha, and also will be a heart-warming resting place where for those who are immersed in the time chaos and personal selfishness in the rapidly changing modern civilization.

Jinkwan Temple has been renowned for its 'Temple Food' for over a millenium.Though not being situated at a deep mountain, we, Jinkwan Temple, are considered one of the four largest temples in the vicinity of the Seoul Metropolitan area, and we have invited many foreign embassadors' wives and? introduced 'Traditional Temple Food' to explore.
Bearing the healthy taste and incense of the temple food, we run a temple stay program.?In order to become a living space where the cyber realm becomes richer and more prosperous day by day, active participation of not only the Jinkwan Temple's general Buddists and believers but also all the general public who visit us are cordially requested.
For everyone who visits cyberspace here, I offer a fervent prayer for Buddha's constant blessings.
