< Temples and Contemplation > - Vow and Dedication of merit

Do you have a ‘wish’ you wish to fulfill during your life?
In Buddhism, a strong vow made to attain enlightenment or save sentient beings is called a ‘vow’.

Furthermore, dedicating the merits of one's practice to others is called ‘dedication’.

Through vows and dedication, one can transcend selfishness and practice a life of altruism.

If you're curious about the true meaning of vows and dedication,
you can find out on the Templestay blog.

- A Gatha That Brightens the Mind

Poems that contain the Buddha's teachings or praise the Buddha's virtuesare called ‘gathas’.

As Buddhism entered China and the scriptures recording the Buddha's teachings were translated into Classical Chinese, the verses of the scriptures passed down orally by Indian Vens naturally transformed into the form of Chinese poetry.

The tradition of expressing the joy of enlightenment through poetry, dating back to the time of the Buddha, was also faithfully passed down to Vens in China and Korea, and gathas became songs of enlightenment, settling into life as an integral part.

To escape the suffering caused by karma, ‘repentance’ is absolutely necessary.
How can one properly repent?

- Impermanence, an endless beginning

“Time flies,” “Life is impermanent” these words come naturally to mind.
But did you know that this ‘impermanence’ originates from Buddhism's ‘impermanence of all phenomena’?
People often confuse ‘impermanence’ with ‘meaninglessness,’ but they actually carry entirely different meanings.

'Impermanence of all phenomena' is one of the Three Marks of Existence, the most fundamental doctrine in Buddhism, meaning ‘all phenomena constantly arise and cease without a moment's pause.’

If you're curious about the details of ‘impermanence’ and endless beginnings,
you can find more on the Templestay blog.

- The Great Compassionate One, Ksitigarbha

Ksitigarbha is the embodiment of great compassion, guiding all sentient beings from the heavens to hell until the appearance of Maitreya Buddha.

Each morning in the Tush*ta Heaven, one of the heavenly realms, he enters meditation to discern who suffers in pain and who needs aid.

Yet Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva voluntarily renounced his own enlightenment.
Even though he had already attained the status of a Bodhisattva, with enlightenment within reach. Aren't you curious about the reason?

When I commit evil deeds, I defile myself;
When I do good deeds, I purify myself.
Thus, purity and defilement depend on me alone—no one can purify me.
