Why are so many roof tiles stacked at Korean temples?

When you visit a Korean temple, you may notice stacks of black roof tiles neatly piled near the Main Buddha Hall.

These are not decorative tiles.
They are part of Giwa Bulsa (Roof Tile Donation), a unique Buddhist tradition in Korea. 🙏

Visitors write their names, their family's names, or heartfelt wishes—such as good health, happiness, and success—on a roof tile before making an offering.

The tile is then used in the construction or restoration of the temple roof, becoming part of the building that protects the sacred space. Although the writing is hidden once the roof is completed, the wish and the merit of the offering are believed to remain.

The next time you visit a Korean temple, take a moment to appreciate the countless hopes and heartfelt prayers built into its roof. 💚

🌿Following Heungguksa Temple’s Legacy of Protecting the Nation:
A Templestay in Yeosu

We spent a special Templestay at Heungguksa Temple, a historic temple nestled at the foot of Yeongchwisan Mountain.

As we explored the temple grounds, we discovered stories of Heungguksa’s long history and its role in protecting the nation, and took part in experiences featuring the four Buddhist instruments and traditional Korean archery.

One of the highlights was getting to play the four Buddhist instruments—
the temple bell, Dharma drum, wooden fish, and cloud-shaped gong. 🔔
The deep resonance and vibrations of the temple bell filled the air,
offering a peaceful moment to quiet the mind.

During the traditional Korean archery experience, we focused entirely on our breathing, posture, and the target. 🏹
It also gave us a deeper appreciation of Heungguksa’s history as a base for warrior monks who fought to defend the country during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century.

Have you ever wondered why there are tiny figures sitting on the roofs of temples❓

They're called Japsang (雜像)—traditional guardian figures placed on rooftops to ward off evil spirits and misfortune.

Among them are Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing—characters from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West—standing watch over temples and palaces.

According to the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), the Silla monk Ado once healed a princess by burning incense.

In Buddhism, offering incense is one of the Six Offerings. It is known as Haetalhyang (解脫香), or the "Incense of Liberation."

As incense burns away, it fills the world with its fragrance. Just as its scent spreads far and wide, it symbolizes the wish for the Buddha's teachings to reach all beings.

Perhaps the incense once burned in the Baekje Gilt-Bronze Incense Burner carried the very same wish. 🙏
