Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgements and how inscrutable his ways!
Romans 11:33 ESV

Paul ends his reflection on God’s grace and mercy in praise to God. As we gather this week in “the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God,” we find that the praise of God is just the beginning of our lives as a living sacrifice to God through service to our neighbor.

"For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all."
Romans 11:32 ESV

With these words, Paul brings us back to the starting point. God’s action to show mercy is both for us and all people. He did this in sending our Savior Jesus. In Him alone, God has had mercy on us all!

"So, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."
Romans 10:17 ESV

This week at International Lutheran Church we hear again God’s Word that calls us to faith in Him and sends us to share this good news to all. He puts this Word in our mouth and in our heart that cries out “Jesus, save me!” But the good news doesn’t stop there! His Word sends us into the world to tell one and all that God is near and that “all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved!”

"The children of the promise are counted as offspring."
Romans 9:8b ESV

Paul reminds us all that we who are in Christ are connected to Him through the promise that is God’s Word. Just as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were born of and through God’s promise, so we are born of the same promise which gave them life. This truth fills our lives with His Spirit and calls us to make known this message throughout all of God’s creation!

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39 ESV

Being “on the road” often means being separated from the ones we love and the things that are most familiar. We are not the only generation to experience the challenges of migration, immigration, displacement, and the rapid changes brought on by worldwide unrest. This is why these words from the book of Romans continue to encourage and strengthen us today. In every age, God wants us all to know the good news that He has removed all the barriers that would ever separate us from Himself.

"Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness."
Romans 8:26a ESV

At times we can get a little weary of life’s trials and tribulations, and the “road” can feel long and arduous. We hear today, though, that we are not alone. Help has already come in the Spirit that speaks FOR us in words and thoughts that we cannot even understand. In Christ, we are not alone!

But you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:15b ESV

The Word of God does not return void and lifeless, but instead springs up and grows in ways that we would never have imagined. We see this in the words of childlike trust that the Spirit plants in us as we now cry out, “Abba, Father!” Here the Word springs forth a new life in the Spirit as we are planted in Christ and as we receive the Spirit that connects us to our loving Heavenly Father who receives us both now and in eternity!
