God cursed Adam and Eve and exiled them from paradise. ‘They lived nine hundred and thirty years with dark and bitter tears and gave birth to children, and their children to other children. And the whole earth was filled. All human beings are from one father and from one mother. This is why all human beings are brethren. It is only our faith that separates us.

Adam and Eve died and they went to hell and burned for five and a half-thousand years because of one sin. BUT WHAT ABOUT US WHO COMMIT SO MANY, and especially me? What is to happen to us? God is compassionate but also just. He also has an iron rod, and as he punished Adam and Eve, he will punish us too if we don’t do good.

Adam and Eve transgressed God’s commandment and were exiled from paradise. Now, what are we doing, my fellow Christians?
Know that in those five and a half-thousand years all who died went to hell. But the Lord had compassion upon the race of humans and came and became perfect man from the Holy Spirit and the purest blood of our Lady, the Theotokos, and Ever-Virgin Mary, and took us out of the hands of the devil.

The Priest is accompanied by a great host of bodiless and divine angels during the Divine Liturgy.

Before the Incarnation of the Word, the angels had an unclear perception of the mystery of Christ and His essence was invincible. When the Word became man, God was manifested in the flesh and seen by angels (1 Tim. 3: 16) and He became visible to the angels.

In the Scripture we can see that the angels appeared to those who were pure in heart like in the instances with the Mother of God, St. Joseph, St. Zachariah and the shepherds in Bethlehem at Christ’s birth. In liturgical Bethlehem, that is the Prothesis, the table that prepares the bread and wine before it is sanctified in the Altar (photo 1), the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word is celebrated and the angels of the Lord appear to priests who, like the shepherds, are pure of soul.

We see this even in modern Saints, like St Iakovos of Evia who saw angels appearing to him during the services. An ascetic Bishop, Bishop Niphon, during the Great Entrance (as can be seen in photo 2) saw a multitude of angels accompanying the priest, joyfully singing hymns, and when the priest placed the Gifts on the Altar Table, the angels covered the Altar with their wings.

St. John Chrysostom says that during the time the bread and wine become sanctified, “angels stand around the priest, all the ranks of heavenly powers sing praises in a loud voice, and the space around the Altar is filled in honour of the One [Christ our Master] who is being sacrificed.”

Only the Priest can perform the Divine Liturgy, the great host of bodiless and divine angels, who serve him throughout the Divine Liturgy with great reverence act as ministers, but they can’t celebrate the Liturgy without the Priest.

So when we attend the Liturgy, whether we attend for a memorial, or to participate fully in the liturgy and to commune the Body and Blood of Christ, let us think about the angelic hosts who play such an important role in the service and minister to our God with fear and love!

At the Falling-Asleep (Dormition) of Panagia, all the faithful began the procession from the home of Saint John the Divine to Panagia’s Tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane. Saint Peter carried the censer, Saint John the Theologian carried the date branch from Paradise, and the other Apostles and disciples of Christ carried light lanterns, and they all chanted Psalms as they carried the Holy body of Our Mother to lay her to rest in the Tomb, with Angels singing and the Holy body of the Mother of God granting Miraculous healing to all who were sick.

This most beautiful procession received numerous attempts to be disrupted. One Jewish priest attempted to overturn the body of Our Lady due to his hatred for Panagia and her Son, however he was stopped when an angel cut his hands off as he approached her body. He received healing upon his sincere repentance. and then joined the procession, confessing Christ as the True God and honouring His Most Holy Mother.

A pregnancy miracle from the Holy Belt of Panagia on December 21, 2008.

“A few days ago I received a blessing – a rope blessed on the Holy Belt of the Virgin Mary. The girl who used it became pregnant despite all the problems that existed; it was the miracle of miracles. She did a [kind of] therapy for 6 months in which time she could not take medication so as to cleanse the body, and since she was trying, for 3 of those months, to get pregnant she avoided drugs for this purpose as well. As a consequence she had great pain all over her body because of her disease.

The last day of her therapy was 1 December 2008; she planned to resume her medication the next day. On the evening of November 30 she took a pregnancy test and the result was positive. Of course you can understand the joy and happiness of us all. Once again, the Virgin Mary had helped.

In April of 2003 we visited your monastery and got two more ropes which were blessed on the holy belt of the Virgin Mary. One of which I gave to a colleague. Her sister, who lived in Germany, had tried for years to have children and could not. She had spent large amounts of money trying to do so. The other I gave to a colleague of my mother (a teacher) who was also trying for many years but unfortunately could not have children.

After I gave away the “belts” I felt confident about the outcome. However I was careless and didn’t ask [any follow-up questions].

One year or so passed and suddenly on our way to work my colleague tells me that she planned on taking a vacation in order to go and see her niece. I asked if this was her sister in Germany who had given birth, and it turned out after so many years of effort her sister had finally had a child.

That afternoon I told myself I must ask my mother what happened with her colleague. Her colleague, who after so many years of sorrow, also gave birth, thanks to the grace of the holy belt.

I thanked the Virgin Mary, who helps so many every day. We sought her help once more and like an affectionate mother, she ran to help.”

St. Kallinikos of Edessa was born in Sitaralona, Agrinio in 1918, to a poor family. Raised in a spiritual household, St. Kallinikos was ordained a deacon and then a priest by his brother. He became the secretary of the metropolis and a preacher of the army.

He was a man of almsgiving, prayer, meekness, and had many pastoral activities in his metropolis. When he passed away at the age of 65 by a brain tumour, his will showed that he had little to no belongings, and that he had very little money as he used to give to the disadvantaged.

St. Kallinikos was very careful on which priests to ordain. When they exhumed his relics, people witnessed that his right hand (the hand that is placed on top of the head of the person being ordained) and his pelvis (because he never fell into lust and was pure) was very fragrant.

His whole life was a miracle, and still continues to be. God honoured him with the ability to heal people, when he was a priest he drove away demons and contributed to the spiritual rebirth of many, as well as after his death healing people and appearing to them who where sick and healed them. Once he sat all night, until the morning, reading prayers, and though the demon screamed, he continued to read until the morning when the demon came out.

St. Paisios the Athonite said that he had never met such a holy bishop in his life like St. Kallinikos.

An attribute of St. Kallinikos which we can all learn from is being attacked by scandals and rumours. He suffered a lot during his time as an administrator in the Metropolis and in relation to this, he used to say: “Heaven will speak”, he never responded to such lies, and kept silent. He showed confidence in God’s Providence.

He loved the Saints and tried to learn from their lives, especially the martyred Saints, hence he wanted to take the name Kallinikos as it means ‘glorious triumphant martyrs’ in Greek.

May we have St. Kallinikos, whose feast day is on the 8th of August, intercessions!

ST. KALLINIKOS OF EDESSA MIRACULOUSLY HEALS SERIOUSLY ILL CHILD

In 2024, a 7-month-old child was suffering from a serious congenital heart condition. On the eve of the feast of St. Kallinikos (August 7), the child’s father prayed with tears, asking the saint to intercede before our Lord Jesus Christ for his child’s healing.

That night, he dreamt he was carrying his sick child into a church to receive Holy Communion. Although the church was dark and seemingly empty, he saw a bishop standing in the Holy Altar, surrounded by an intense light. The bishop smiled, saying he had been waiting for them, and gestured for the father to hand him the child.

The father later wrote: “From that moment, I felt all the psychological burden I had been carrying inside me for so long leave.”

The bishop comforted him, saying not to worry, that he would take the child to Christ, and that everything would be alright. Nearby stood Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos and St. Vlasios, who offered to help hold the child.

As the father left the Altar, he asked a young novice who the bishop was. Smiling, the novice replied, “Kallinikos.” Confused, the father asked, “Which Kallinikos?” At that moment, he awoke.

The next morning, on the feast of St. Kallinikos, he searched online and was left speechless when he found a photograph of the saint. Although he had never seen him before, he immediately recognised him as the very bishop from his dream.

The family travelled to venerate the holy relics of St. Kallinikos, took oil from his vigil lamp, and anointed their child with faith.

From that time onward, the child’s condition began to improve. His appetite returned, his mood changed, and his overall clinical condition steadily recovered. At follow-up medical appointments just weeks later, he had miraculously gained weight after months of illness and decline.

As a thanksgiving to God and St. Kallinikos, the parents named the child they were expecting during this trial Kallinikos.

Today is the Feast Day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

“He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light” (Matthew 17:2).

Thus the Lord was transfigured according to His humanity, on Tabor. And by this we are given to know that He can miraculously transform and illuminate us, our nature, our soul and our body, darkened by sin and the passions of life, as He indeed transfigures, transforms, illuminates. You don’t have to go far for examples. They happen every day to every praying and sincerely repentant Christian believer. I will ask each of you: tell me, what happens to you when you come burdened with some sin, even though you come to this church with sincere repentance and fervent prayer to God and His Most Pure Mother? Or when you are oppressed by some strong sorrow and anguish, and you pray to the Lord with tears that He would ease it, destroy it, drive it away? Did you not notice a great change in your soul soon after? You sincerely repented of your sin, condemned yourself, reproached yourself, looked soberly at your disapproving thoughts, feelings, actions, gave your word to change: your sin is forgiven, you have become calm; your soul is light, free, quiet and graceful. And if you grieved greatly and yearned for something, and expressed your sorrows and misfortunes before God or the Mother of God, the joy of all those who mourn, with obedience to the will of God, tell me, did you not soon feel a change in your soul? Peace and quiet tenderness settled in your soul with hope in the paternal providence of God, and you left after your prayer comforted and encouraged.

This means that there is a transfiguration in each of us – that is, from sincere, fervent prayer we are miraculously transformed for the better; and we become calm, and sober from the sins that intoxicate us; for truly, whatever sins you commit, will make us drunk, and we will feel disgust for sin, and we will abandon sin, and we will feel a disposition towards virtue and we will become closer to God. Otherwise, evil sin would completely distance us from God if we did not pray, repent, and experience sorrows. - St. John Kronstadt
