I often think about people in the New Testament that are exceptionally blessed. Of course Mary who was chosen to give birth to the everlasting eternal Son of God. But then I always also think of Simon of Cyrene who had the privilege to carry the cross for Jesus. In both those cases, only one person in history got to fulfill that role.
So this last resurrection Sunday we were reading from John’s gospel, and we were reminded about doubting Thomas. One of Jesus’ chosen twelve disciples. But he wasn’t in the room with the other disciples when Jesus appeared to them after His resurrection. So he doubted and wasn’t willing to believe that Jesus was alive unless he could have proof.
Well, the proof came one week later. When Jesus told Thomas to put his hand in his side where the soldier’s spear had pierced Him and touch the holes in his hand. We always think that Thomas missed out on something by not being there the week before. But God had chosen Thomas for something so much greater than being there when Jesus breathed on them and said, “receive the Holy Spirit.” God chose Thomas to NOT be there so that Jesus could give us one of the most important statements in all of the bible…
Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” – John 20:29
Don’t live life focused on what you may have missed. Focus on the only thing that matters, Jesus Christ. Because Thomas wasn’t there, millions upon millions of us get to know we are blessed when we believe the Truth – even without seeing what they saw.
