Feb 1st, 2014 Galatians 3:15-29, God's Promise

Summary:
1. The Mosaic Law came after the promise to Abraham and does not nullify God’s promise or create a different path to salvation.
2. The purpose of the Mosaic Law was to serve as our guardian until Christ came.
3. Because of this, there are to be no second class citizens in the Kingdom of God.

Jan 26th Galatians 2:15-3:14 - The Relationship Between Faith and Works

1. The Old Testament Law without the grace of Christ is a curse because it cannot save. Properly viewed this should drive us to a need for salvation.
2. True righteousness is given to us by Christ through faith. Faith is the instrument by which the blessings and miracles of God come to us.
3. Faith fuels the Christian life from beginning to end. You cannot begin in faith and continue by your own strength. We do everything in faith.

Note from the Pastor: This week was a bit difficult since the text required a lot of Old Testament references and the subject matter has to be explained very clearly. I was a little disappointed to hear people still use the language of "balancing faith and works" in our discussion afterwards. Let's be clear - there is no balancing act to be done. We are saved by faith alone and it's in faith that we are able to do God's work. It is the mistaken tendency in contemporary thinking to divorce what we believe from what we do, when in reality what we believe informs what we do.

For example, if I believe that monsters can't attack me while I'm under my blanket, I will hide under my blanket.

A more adult example would be if I believe that have eternal life in heaven with God, then I would not be as afraid of death as most people.

What we truly believe always influences what we do.

Galatians 2:1-14 - Ministry Basics

1. The gospel is a single message whose integrity must be strictly protected.
2. The gospel is ministered to all different kinds of people.
-Both Peter and Paul adapted to the cultures of the groups they ministered to. We should do the same.
-It is dangerous to let the culture influence you as to sin, whether that be on the side of self-righteousness or other more commonly thought-of sins.
3. The gospel creates in the Christian a special concern for the poor.

Note from the Pastor: While I was preparing for this sermon I really felt like what was going on between Paul, Peter and the influential false teachers in Galatia was epic. You have an account of arguably the two biggest Christian leaders of their time being very candid about their mistakes and differences, putting aside their pride for the integrity of the gospel. Something I didn't touch on much was the amazing humility that Peter continued to show in his life. The first being that he had to be the one to tell the embarrassing and heartbreaking account of his triple denial of Jesus before the crucifixion, and the second being his acceptance of public rebuke from Paul. Even the best of us can still make mistakes.

Galatians 1:11-24, Self-Righteous Destruction

Summary

Introduction - Historical Background

Self-righteousness cannot save (Paul’s personal example of being a top Pharisee is worth nothing for salvation)

Self-righteousness destroys your sense of mission (creates unhealthy hate and hides as a virtue)

Self-righteousness destroys your peace (feelings about your relationship with God are based on your performance, not Christ’s death for you, feelings of self-loathing)

The solution is God’s grace (the true gospel erases your ability to boast in yourself, it makes you run to God even if your performance is bad)

Galatians 1:1-10, The True Good News

Summary

1.Salvation - God gave himself for our sins. He did this to rescue us from evil. The emphasis is on God’s actions, not ours. Salvation is all from God and only from God. It is a gift paid for by Jesus Christ and given to us freely.

2.There is only one gospel - Any additional requirements for salvation are not part of God’s message. Paul writes that anyone preaching a different gospel should be cursed. His language is strong and clear, so that people understand the importance of the true gospel. Without the true good news, Christianity becomes another powerless religion, unable to give peace to the soul.
The true gospel pleases God, but goes against the world - The good news pleases God because it is the truth.

3.Salvation by grace is not popular because it humiliates us and puts us in a proper relationship with God as his servants. We would rather meet God at a bargaining table than an altar of worship because it’s easier. We understand this kind of false religion because it operates the same way our world does - based on performance.

If you are looking for a church and/or a community of nice people, I'd like to invite you out to our church. A little background on me: I was born and raised in California, came from a non-Christian background, have a masters in divinity (so I actually know what I'm talking about), and a wide variety of interests including walks on the beach.

Seriously though, I'm looking to help the expat community in any way I can, whether or not you believe what I believe about God. It can be difficult living in a foreign country, so I'd like to build a community of people who watch after one another.

Please contact me with any questions.
