This morning, Commander Tuijo “TJ” Thompson of HMNZS Te Mana and Commander Kane Sutherland of HMNZS Aotearoa visited the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) with their crews. Through a wreath-laying, a moment of silence, and a haka, they honored the courage and service of they honored the courage and service of fellow New Zealand service members who fought and fell during the Korean War. 🇺🇳🇳🇿⚓️💐🙏
Ms. Sarah McDowell, Deputy Head of Mission at the New Zealand Embassy in Korea, noted that “New Zealand was one of the first nations to respond to the UN call,” and that 32 of the 45 New Zealand service members who lost their lives rest here alongside their fellow UN comrades. She also highlighted New Zealand’s continuing commitment to remembrance as a member of the Commission for the UNMCK (CUNMCK).
Commander Thompson then shared the story of Able Seaman Bob Marchioni, the only member of the Royal New Zealand Navy killed during the Korean War. He was just 19 at the time of his death. His comrades tried to recover his body but were unable to do so, leaving him to rest on a beach along the North Korean coast.
Remembering ABS Marchioni, Commander Thompson reminded today’s sailors to reflect, even amid uncertainty and tension, on the meaning of their uniform and the oath they took when they put it on.
Seventy-six years after answering the call of the United Nations, their sacrifice and service live on at the UNMCK, along with the promise to remember them. 😊

사라 맥도웰 주한뉴질랜드대사관 부대사는 “뉴질랜드는 유엔의 부름에 즉시 응답한 나라 중 하나”라며, 전사자 45명 가운데 32명이 이곳에 다른 유엔군 전우들과 함께 잠들어 있다고 이야기했습니다. 또한 뉴질랜드가 유엔기념공원 국제관리위원회 회원국으로서 이들의 희생을 기억하고 기리는 데 힘쓰고 있음을 강조했습니다.
이어 톰슨 함장은 유일한 뉴질랜드 해군 전사자인 밥 마치오니 수병의 이야기를 들려주었습니다. 북한 지역에서 작전 중 전사하여 전우들이 그의 시신을 수습하려 했지만 끝내 뜻을 이루지 못해, 그는 북한의 한 해안가에 잠들게 되었습니다. 그의 나이 19세였습니다.
톰슨 함장은 마치오니 수병을 추모하며 오늘의 장병들에게도 “불안과 긴장 속에서 우리가 입은 군복과 그 군복을 입으며 했던 선서의 의미를 생각해야 한다”고 강조했습니다.
76년 전 유엔의 부름에 응답했던 이들의 희생과 헌신, 그리고 그들을 잊지 않겠다는 약속은 오늘도 유엔기념공원에서 이어지고 있습니다. 😊
