It felt as though the beautiful memories of their 64 years together, from the time she was a 17-year-old girl sending her 20-year-old soldier off to war, were slowly flowing through her fingertips. 🇺🇳🇫🇷🪖💐🙏

Mrs. Benard had only one final wish: to be laid to rest alongside her husband here at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK). Her daughter, Véronique, shared that she can still feel the warmth of her mother's touch on her arm, just as she did whenever she supported her while walking during her last years.

Yesterday, the co-interment ceremony for Mrs. Benard was attended not only by her bereaved family but also by numerous people with whom she had formed special bonds in Korea. Each brought something meaningful: her favorite flowers, the personalized slippers she used to wear during visits to their homes, and handwritten letters she had sent over the years, placing them before her grave. She received back all the love she had given throughout her lifetime.

We will always remember Mrs. Benard's gentle smile, her soft silver hair, and the deep, blue gaze she held for her husband. Having crossed the long expanse of separation to finally be held in her husband's arms, we wish Mrs. Benard eternal happiness as the two of them now share the stories they have so longed to tell each other.

Today, two French Korean War veterans returned to rest beside their fallen comrades at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK). 🇺🇳🇫🇷🪖💐🙏

Mr. André Datcharry shed tears after laying flowers in front of the French Memorial during his visit to the UNMCK in 2023. We came to understand a glimpse of the meaning behind those tears through the remarks delivered by his son.

The rigorous military training taught him how to fight as a soldier, but it never taught him how to endure the grief when a comrade fell beside him. Having marched to war with a flower tucked into the barrel of his rifle, Mr. Datcharry felt as though that flower had been stolen away when he witnessed his comrades' deaths. With a trembling voice, his son remarked, "Today, my father would feel as if he has finally received that flower back."

Mr. Jacques Grisolet was deployed to Korea twice in his early twenties, carrying out missions on the front lines, including at Heartbreak Ridge. He earned deep respect for strictly adhering to the solemn principle of never leaving a comrade behind.

To his family, Mr. Grisolet was a warm and affectionate father. Expressing her love and respect, his daughter shared, "Every morning, my father would wake me up with a gentle kiss on the cheek, slice butter into perfect pieces for me to eat, and fill my childhood with all kinds of joyful memories. He was the true role model of my life."

May the two veterans rest in eternal peace alongside their comrades.

군인으로서 살아남는 방법을 가르쳐준 혹독한 훈련은, 옆의 전우가 전사했을 때 그 죽음을 견디는 방법까지는 가르쳐주지 않았습니다. 출정하며 총구에 꽃을 꽂았던 다샤리 참전용사는 전우의 죽음을 목격했을 때, 그 꽃을 빼앗긴 느낌이었다고 해요. 아들은 떨리는 목소리로 "아버지는 오늘 그 꽃을 다시 돌려받은 느낌일 것"이라고 말했습니다.

자크 그리졸레 참전용사는 20대 초반 한국에 두 차례 파병되어 단장의 능선 등 최전선에서 임무를 수행했습니다. 그는 전우를 뒤에 남겨두고 오지 않는다는 철칙을 지켜 많은 존경을 받기도 했습니다.

그리졸레 참전용사는 자상하고 다정한 아버지였습니다. 그의 딸은, "아버지는 아침마다 볼인사로 저를 깨워줬고, 먹기 좋게 버터를 잘라주며, 온갖 재미있는 일들로 제 유년시절을 채워주셨어요. 그리고 아버지는 제 삶의 귀감이 되어주셨습니다." 라며 아버지에게 사랑과 존경을 보냈습니다.

Mr. Guy Black from Canada, who successfully walked the entire 625-km route from Gapyeong to the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK), brought his journey to a meaningful close with a tribute ceremony honoring the UN fallen of the Battle of Gapyeong. 🇺🇳🪖💐🙏

During the ceremony held in front of the UN Forces Monument last Saturday, young students carrying the roll of honor of the Korean War dead entered alongside the UN Command honor guard. Together, they took a moment to reflect on the sacrifice and service of the fallen UN soldiers through a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of silence.

Afterward, Mr. Black moved to the Canadian Memorial to lay flowers and pay his respects, marking the official end of his long journey. The students laid poppies on the graves of the fallen soldiers from the Battle of Gapyeong and placed blue flowers at the French graves, conveying the commitment of the younger generation to carrying forward the memory of the Korean War. 🕊💭
