밤 하늘 어둠을 거두며
별들의 갈길을 밝힘은

(1979년, 제가 송도본당 중등부 3학년때 고등부 2학년이셨던 이태석신부님께서 기타치시며 가르쳐주셨던 젠성가입니다.)

제가 가경자 소 알로이시오 신부님과 이태석 신부님을 '별들의 조화'라고 표현하면서 올리는 까닭은 소 알로이시오 신부님께선 6.25전쟁이후 세상에서 가장 가난한 한국을 선택하시고 미국에서 찾아 오셨습니다. 그리고 부산교구 송도본당에 주임신부님으로 발령 받으셨습니다(1962~66년). 마리아수녀회, 그리스도수도회, 구호병원, 소년의 집 등을 설립하시고 이끄셨으며 이후 동남아와 남미(사 후 아프리카)까지 진출하십니다. 그리고 1992년 루게릭병으로 선종하십니다. 소 신부님께서 송도본당 주임을 맡으신 그 해 이태석신부님께서 송도성당 아래서 태어나십니다. 성장기동안 성당에서 거의 살다시피 하시면서 활동하셨고, 의사로 91년 8월에 살레시오회에 입회하십니다. 소 알로이시오 신부님은 92년 3월에 선종하시지요. 이후 사제가 되어 세상에서 가장 가난한 나라 남수단 톤즈를 선택하시고 떠나십니다. 선교(의료, 교육, 음악...)로 하루를 일년같이 사시며 다방면으로 애쓰셨던 신부님께선 대장암으로 2010년 선종하십니다. 그 당시는 몰랐지만 시간이 지나며 느껴졌습니다. "별들의 조화"라고!

51) 알로이시오 신부와 이태석 신부

알로이시오 신부가 송도 일대에서 구호 사업을 펼치던 그 때, 남몰래 그의 삶을 자기 삶의 본보기로 삼은 사람이 있었다. 아프리카 수단에서 가난한 아이들을 위해 봉사활동을 하다 2010년에 선종한 이태석 신부다.

이태석 신부는 알로이시오 신부가 송도 본당으로 발령을 받은 그해에 태어났다. 그리고 엄마 등에 업혀 송도성당에 다녔다. 알로이시오 신부가 송도 본당 주임신부였을 때 이태석 신부는 아직 어린아이에 지나지 않았지만, 훗날 알로이시오 신부가 송도 일대에서 가난한 사람들을 위한 구호 사업을 펼쳐 나갈 때 아주 가까이에서 그 모습을 지켜보며 중 고등학교를 다녔다.

그때 소년 이태석은 알로이시오 신부의 삶을 보고 장차 자신도 알로이시오 신부처럼 가난한 나라에 가서 가난한 사람들을 위해 일생을 바치겠다고 다짐했다.

어릴 적 집 근처에 있었던 에서 가난한 고아들을 보살피고, 몸과 마음을 씻겨 주던 알로이시오 신부님과 그곳 수녀님들의 헌신적인 삶의 모습은 내 마음을 움직이게 한 아름다운 향기였다.

훗날 의사가 된 이태석 신부는 수도원에 들어가 사제서품을 받은 뒤, 어릴 때부터 간직했던 그 생각을 실천에 옮겼다. 세계에서 가장 위험하고, 가장 가난한 나라인 수단으로 갔던 것이다.

그곳에서 병원을 지어 의사로서 환자들을 치료하고, 학교를 세워 교사로서 아이들을 가르쳤다. 마치 알로이시오 신부가 폐허가 된 한국 땅에 병원을 짓고 학교를 지었던 것처럼 말이다.

"사랑하는 아이들아!
오늘 나는 너희를 부르고 있다.
하느님께 돌아오너라. 기도로 돌아오너라.
그리하여 너희가 평화를 전하는 이들이 되어라.
어린 아이들아, 위험에 처한 평화를 위하여 기도하여라.
너희의 마음과 너희 가정에서
기도가 새롭게 흘러나오기 시작하게 하여라.
그리하여 너희가 기쁨 속에서
너희 마음 안에서 ‘평화가 너희와 함께!’라고 하시는
예수님의 목소리를 느낄 수 있을 것이다.
어린 아이들아, 기도하지 않는 모든 이들을 위하여
너희가 평화와 기도를 전하는 이들이 되어라.
내가 너희와 함께 있다.
그리고 내 아들 예수님 앞에서 너희를 위하여 기도하고 있다.

Saint Louis of France’s Story
At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Other kings had done the same, of course. Louis was different in that he actually interpreted his kingly duties in the light of faith. After the violence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice.

Saint Louis of France “took the cross” for a Crusade when he was 30. His army seized Damietta in Egypt but not long after, weakened by dysentery and without support, they were surrounded and captured. Louis obtained the release of the army by giving up the city of Damietta in addition to paying a ransom. He stayed in Syria four years.

Louis deserves credit for extending justice in civil administration. His regulations for royal officials became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the use of written records in court.

Saint Louis of France was always respectful of the papacy, but defended royal interests against the popes, and refused to acknowledge Innocent IV’s sentence against Emperor Frederick II.

Saint Louis of France was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visiting the sick, and like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order. Louis united France—lords and townsfolk, peasants and priests and knights—by the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace.

Every day, Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him, and a large number of poor were served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. He kept lists of needy people, whom he regularly relieved, in every province of his dominion.

Disturbed by new Muslim advances, Louis led another crusade to North Africa in 1270. Within a month of their landing at Carthage, the army camp was decimated by disease. Louis himself died there at the age of 56. He was canonized 27 years later.

Reflection
Saint Louis of France was strong-willed, strong-minded. His word was trusted utterly, and his courage in action was remarkable. What is most remarkable was his sense of respect for anyone with whom he dealt, especially the “humble folk of the Lord.” To care for his people he built cathedrals, churches, libraries, hospitals and orphanages. He dealt with princes honestly and equitably. He hoped to be treated the same way by the King of Kings, to whom he gave his life, his family and his country.
