Phimeanakas is an ancient Hindu temple located within the Royal Palace complex of Angkor Thom in Cambodia.

Constructed during the reign of King Rajendravarman and later completed under Suryavarman I in the 10th century CE, the temple was built in the classical Khmer style atop a three-tiered pyramid platform.

Phimeanakas served as a royal sanctuary, where the king reportedly performed nightly rituals believed to secure the kingdom’s protection and divine favour.

The central tower once rose prominently above the pyramid, surrounded by galleries and terraces adorned with bas-reliefs, showcasing the Khmer mastery of stone carving and religious symbolism.

Strategically positioned within the palace grounds, the temple reflects both the political authority and spiritual devotion of the Khmer Empire...

Its stepped pyramid design symbolises Mount Meru, the sacred mountain of Hindu cosmology, and is surrounded by a moat representing the cosmic ocean.

The central sanctuary at the summit once housed images of the deity Shiva, while surrounding enclosures and laterite walls structured the temple complex, reflecting careful planning and an evolving architectural style that influenced later Khmer monuments, including those at Angkor...
