Neak Poan is a small but beautiful temple located in the Angkor Archaeological Park complex of Cambodia. It was built in the late 12th century by Jayavarman VII, a Khmer ruler of the Khmer Empire.
The temple is known for its unique design and features a large circular pool with small square basins at each of its cardinal points. The basins are said to represent the four elements of earth, fire, water, and wind, while the central pool is thought to represent the mythical Himalayan lake Anavatapta, which was believed to have healing properties.
The small temple building located on an artificial island in the center of the pool is surrounded by four smaller ponds. It was constructed using sandstone and brick and has been restored several times. The temple's interior comprises of a single chamber with four doors and is believed to have been used as a site of healing rituals.
In addition, the temple features some impressive carvings, particularly on the undersides of the temple's roof and the exterior walls. Neak Poan is truly a fascinating site that provides visitors with a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Cambodia.
