Join us in praying for Nepal and the border region 🙏

The floods in Nepal have been shocking, heartbreaking, and absolutely devastating. Two entire villages no longer exist. Reports from a believer in the region are that the few who survived the floods have been evacuated to Kathmandu. Please pray:
- For rescue efforts: Some of the rescuers are Christian mountaineer guides from Tibetan Buddhist backgrounds. Pray for God's grace on them as they see the devastation and death firsthand.

- For those who have lost family and friends: Pray that God will meet them in the valley of the shadow of death. Pray that many will come to know him.

- For believers in Nepal: Pray that God will deepen their trust in him. Pray that they will have opportunities to declare the reason for their hope.

Contributions to relief efforts will be available through partnerships with a group of churches in Nepal. They plan to distribute mattresses, tarps, dry food, and personal hygiene products in the relief areas. They will focus on the smaller regions that are less likely to receive government attention. Details will be available soon.

What does it look like to love your neighbour when that neighbour has become your enemy?

This testimony, shared by Matthias Schmidt, Church Planter in Cambodia, reminds us that God often works through ordinary believers who are willing to obey Him. Through one act of faith and compassion, the hope of Jesus reached a family who had never known Him.

How does God provide for the spiritual needs of people in Cambodia? How do they get to know this God who is the provider for this life and for eternity? Let me tell you the story of Sokheng.
Sokheng came to Christ a few years ago. He and his wife are hungry for God’s Word. So, we as the OMF Stung Treng team study the Bible with them every week to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus.

One morning, Sokheng opened his Bible and read: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He knew instantly that God was calling him to visit a seriously ill woman who lived not far from his house. This lady was one of his biggest enemies in the village. Once, she even hit him and caused her sons to throw stones at him.
Now she was gravely ill. Her extended family believed she would die very soon, so they had gathered at her house to prepare for her burial.

Sokheng was nervous as he went to her house, but he was also certain that God was calling him to be there. Entering the house, he found himself surrounded by more than 30 family members, with the woman lying on her bed, close to death.

Sokheng asked whether they would allow him to pray. They knew he was a Christian, and they agreed. He prayed. One minute later, she opened her eyes. Sokheng asked the family to help her sit up so she could breathe more easily, and her breathing improved.

The family was astonished. Sitting among them, Sokheng explained, “We as Christians are called to love everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs.”

The woman was better, but not healed. In the following weeks, her health declined. Sokheng and his wife continued to visit her, bringing food and explaining, “During her last days she should at least have a good meal.”

This woman had never been interested in Jesus. During her final days, she was almost too weak to speak. But when she was asked whether she would like to believe in Jesus, she answered, “Yes.”
A few days later, her life on earth ended.

How did God provide for the spiritual need of this woman? God raised up a local believer to share the Good News with a family from a different faith background. Their obedience and love opened her heart to Jesus.

God still works through ordinary people like Sokheng and his wife.

He can work through you, too. Your investment in sharing the Good News of Jesus in all its fullness with people in rural Cambodia can change not only individual lives, but entire communities.

Around the world, people are searching for hope in different ways. In Cambodia, the annual Pch'um Ben festival reflects a deep desire to care for loved ones who have passed away and to find peace beyond this life.

In this reflection, Matthias Schmidt, Church Planter in Cambodia, shares what this festival reveals about the spiritual need in Cambodia—and why the hope of Jesus is such good news.

The smell of a delicious Cambodian dish fills the whole kitchen area. The mother is adding the last spices, stirring one more time in the pot and now the food is ready to eat. But she won’t eat it herself, nor will her children. In fact, the food is not intended for human beings at all.

The mother fills the tasty soup and other parts of the meal in a nice container. Then she puts on her nicest white top and a traditional silk skirt and heads towards the next Wat, a Buddhist temple area. Arriving there, she lines up with a lot of other people who are offering their food to the Buddhist monks. Although the monks will eat the food, they just serve as a bridge. The intended receivers are the spirits of deceased family members.

It is Pch'um Ben. At this festival, so the belief, the gates of hell are opened so that the hungry spirits of the deceased can go out and search for food. They will never get any food in hell, so it is the one and only possibility during the year to receive it. And only the related family can provide for them. Nobody else.

The monks in the Wat serve as a bridge to the unseen world. But as you cannot see the spirits, you never quite know where they are. To increase the chance that your food will reach them, you should visit several Wats in order to offer food at several places. You have about two weeks to provide for your deceased ancestors. If you fail to do so, the hungry spirits keep hungry—and become angry. They will curse you. So, make sure you are there at Pch'um Ben.

How different is the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Jesus invites us to the feast in heaven with a full dinner table. He promises all who put their trust in Him that He is preparing a place for us in His Father's eternal home (John 14:2–3). How blessed we are in God, our Provider!

To share about Him is the reason why we live and serve in rural Cambodia.
