MHC PAINTING BY TOMASSO LORENZONE
The painting was conceived by Don Bosco who spoke to the painter, Tomasso Lorenzone, as a spectacle already seen: "The Most Holy Mary in high among the choruses of angels. Then the choruses of prophets, virgins and confessors. On the ground, the emblems of Mary's great victories and the peoples of the world raising their hands towards her asking for help".
The painter made him see that painting such a picture would need a square and a church as large as Piazza Castello to house it. Don Bosco resigned himself to reducing the scale of his project. So he described it: “The Virgin stands in a sea of light and majesty, surrounded by a host of Angels, who offer her respect as their Queen. With her right hand, she holds the scepter that is a symbol of her power, and with the left holding the Child who has His arms open, thus offering His graces and His mercy to those who appeal to the majesty of His mother.
Around and below are the Holy Apostles and the Evangelists. They are carried away by sweet ecstasy, almost exclaiming: Regina Apostolorum, ora pro nobis. They contemplate the Holy Virgin in amazement. At the bottom of the painting is the city of Turin with the sanctuary of Valdocco in the foreground and with Superga in the background. What is most valuable in the picture is the religious idea, which generates a devout impression in those who see it “.
Turin, Italy - 1865 - Don Bosco was not an artist, but for works of art he relied on intuition as educator and evangelizer. He entrusted the painting of the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians’ main altar to Tommaso Lorenzone. The artist followed Don Bosco’s precise instructions, giving him the first sketch of the imposing image of Mary Help of Christians.
Lorenzone hired the highest hall in Palazzo Madama and started the work. After three years, the great painting was hung in its place.
According to the description given by Don Bosco, the painting is an effective representation of the title “Mary, Mother of the Church”, and a great page of Marian catechesis. Mary, as Mother of the Son of God, is the Queen of heaven and earth; the whole Church, represented by the Apostles and the Saints, acclaims her Mother and powerful Help of Christians.
