THE UNTOLD STORY OF CHRISTIANITY IN CENTRAL KENYA (Part 30)

The Two Altars:

For generations two worlds have been sitting side by side.

When missionaries first came, many Africans welcomed Christianity. Churches were built, hymns were sung, and Bibles were carried with pride. On the surface, people had “converted.” They left behind old shrines, taboos, and rituals.

But deep down they thought the values of their forefathers still mattered; The way they understood ancestors, curses, blessings, and the spirit world that was the soil their faith grew in.

Christianity was the new cloth, but the body underneath was still shaped by African Traditional Religion.

Over time, cracks began to show. When sickness came, when a child couldn’t get a job, when a family was struck by misfortune, people would kneel in church on Sunday and pray to Jesus.

But the prayer felt distant, slow. “God works in His time" they told themselves.

They claimed in ATR, the spirits answered fast. A sacrifice, a ritual, a visit to the Mūgo and things moved.

The frustration grew. People started to feel like Christianity was foreign, like clothes that didn’t quite fit African life and African problems.

The church, they said, couldn’t touch every part of their pain.

So quietly, many began to walk back.

Sunday belonged to the Christian God.

Monday to Friday might belong to the ancestors.

Tuesday could be for appeasing a spirit of the land.

Saturday for protection charms.

They said they had not rejected Jesus. But one God didn’t feel like enough for all their needs.

So they normalized worship of many gods ; a god for healing, a god for harvest, a god for protection.

This double life wasn’t born out of rebellion they said. It was born out of need. It was syncretism: Christianity and ATR, woven together, sometimes in harmony, sometimes in tension, sometimes in quiet hypocrisy.

And that’s the story still being lived in many homes in central Kenya today people caught between the pew and the shrine, trying to make both worlds answer.

What the Bible says:

Scripture doesn’t leave room for two altars, Instead it calls this divided worship idolatry

“You shall have no other gods before me”
Exodus 20:3.

“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons” 1 Corinthians 10:21.

The Bible presents Jesus as sufficient.
“the way, the truth, and life” John 14:6 calling believers to trust Him alone, even in the waiting.

God is a Person:

People have viewed God as a computer or a machine.

If they do something for Him, then they feel that they have a right to demand that God meet their needs.

God is not a machine. He is a person and should be related to in humility as we would relate to any other person.

What father would like to have his children demand that he do this and such because they had done what he said?

No, it is His pleasure to answer the prayers of His children, but it hurts His heart to have His children demand that He performs; failure to which they seek for help elsewhere.
