Reflection – Matthew 18:15–20
9:00 AM Mass – Rev. Fr. Flavian Mwambingu
«“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.”»
Today, Christ teaches us about fraternal correction—the responsibility we have to help one another recognize our mistakes and change our ways.
When we warn someone who is doing wrong and they refuse to change, we have at least done our responsibility. We have tried to help them. Christ calls us to be good "watchmen" of one another.
As parents, church leaders, teachers, and members of the community, we have a responsibility to guide those entrusted to us. Parents, especially, have the duty to give their children proper parental guidance and correction.
In the past, children were guided not only by their parents but also by teachers and other members of society. Today, sometimes our children behave as if they are the ones in charge—“we call them babaa na mamaa.” We must not be afraid to correct them with love. If we fail to guide and warn them when they are going astray, we may one day be asked by God whether we fulfilled our responsibility.
Correction must be done with love. When our brother or sister wrongs us, we should not wait for them to come to us. Christ tells us to take the first step. Go to that person and speak to them privately. Do not turn the matter into a public affair and do not gossip about it.
If the person listens, we have won back our brother or sister. If they do not listen, we are encouraged to involve one or two others who can help. If the matter still cannot be resolved, then we can seek the assistance of the Church.
Let us therefore avoid gossip, condemnation, and spreading people's weaknesses. Instead, let us learn to correct one another with love, humility and concern.
Above all, let us love one another. As Scripture reminds us, we should not owe anyone anything except the debt of love.
May God give us the courage to correct with love, the humility to accept correctionand the wisdom to guide those entrusted to our care.
