A Call for Extra Care on Our Roads

We join the Archdiocese of Mombasa in mourning the tragic loss of the 17 pilgrims from St. Mathias Mulumba, Mikindani Parish, who lost their lives in an accident at Salama while travelling to the National Shrine in Subukia for the National Prayer Day.

As we pray for the repose of their souls and for consolation and strength for their families, parish community and the entire Archdiocese of Mombasa, this tragedy is also a solemn reminder to exercise utmost care on our roads.

We appeal to all motorists, and particularly those transporting pilgrims and groups over long distances, to observe traffic regulations, avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, ensure vehicles are roadworthy, and allow adequate rest during long journeys. No destination is so urgent that we should compromise the safety of those entrusted to our care.

To all pilgrims travelling to and from Subukia, please journey carefully and look out for one another. May the Lord grant everyone safe travels.

May the souls of the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace. Amen.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE MATHARI LAND CASE

​The Environment and Land Court has ruled in favour of the Registered Trustees of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri in the long-running dispute concerning the Mathari land , under Environment and Land Court (ELC) Petition No. 205 of 2014.

​In its determination, the Court affirmed the legal and historical basis of the Church's ownership of the land and made the following key findings:

1. ​Legitimate Ownership
The Court confirmed the Registered Trustees of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri as the legitimate registered owners of the titles relating to the parcels of land in question.

2. ​Legitimacy of the Titles
The Court affirmed that the process through which the Church acquired and held the titles was legitimate, thereby upholding the legal basis of the Church's ownership.

3. ​Historical Status of the Land
The Court determined that the land in question was not Trust Land and, therefore, was not ancestral land as had been claimed. Rather, it was historically classified as Crown Land and consequently Government Land before its subsequent allocation and registration.

4. ​Longstanding Presence of the Church
The Court recognised the Church's longstanding presence at Mathari, noting that it had been in possession and occupation of the land from as early as 1903, with titles held from 1915.
​The judgment in ELC Petition No. 205 of 2014 provides important legal clarity regarding the ownership and historical status of the Mathari land.

​The Archdiocese of Nyeri receives the Court's determination with gratitude and remains committed to the responsible stewardship of its properties and institutions in furtherance of its pastoral, healthcare, educational, social and charitable mission for the good of the people it serves.

​We thank all those who have accompanied the Archdiocese of Nyeri throughout this matter and continue to pray for peace, justice and harmonious coexistence within our communities.

Archbishop Muheria Holds Ecumenical Day with Leaders from Different Christian Denominations

Nyeri | 23 September 2026

Archbishop Anthony Muheria held an Ecumenical Day, meeting separately with leaders from different Christian denominations as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Christian unity, collaboration, and common witness.

Archbishop Muheria was accompanied by Rev. Fr. Patrick Wanjohi, who is now charged with Ecumenism.

The Archbishop began the engagements at 10:30 a.m. with an encounter with Archbishop Muhu of the Akurino Church. At 12:30 p.m., he met PCEA Moderator Rev. Patrick Kimathi, before concluding the day's engagements at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Kariuki Gathuma of Faith Gospel Ministry, accompanied by Bishop David Mwangi Rukwaro of PAG Church.

During the discussions, Archbishop Muheria emphasized the need for Christians to build upon what unites them rather than concentrate on what divides them. He noted that Christians share the same Sacred Scriptures and faith in the Triune God and are entrusted with the responsibility of leading God's people towards heaven while safeguarding the dignity of every human person.

The Archbishop highlighted several areas requiring a united Christian voice, including care for the environment, peacebuilding, combating injustice and corruption, addressing gambling and betting, and promoting responsible citizenship.

On matters of leadership and civic responsibility, he emphasized the importance of nurturing good leadership from the grassroots, rather than focusing solely on the presidency. He called for greater civic education, with faith leaders working together to help citizens understand their responsibilities and participate constructively in society.

Archbishop Muheria also encouraged Christian communities to deepen their relationships by inviting, recognising, and supporting one another during important occasions such as funerals, weddings, fundraisers, and other community events.

Archbishop Muhu emphasized that Christian shepherds should place the Body of Christ at the forefront, witnessing through faith, hope, and charity.

PCEA Moderator Rev. Patrick Kimathi underscored the importance of consultation and practical collaboration, including among major Christian institutions. He cited opportunities for cooperation between institutions such as Mathari and Tumutumu hospitals, as well as in education, where collaboration could strengthen the Churches' engagement on matters affecting their institutions.

Bishop Kariuki Gathuma called for openness and trust in ecumenical engagement, cautioning against unnecessary suspicion between denominations. He also highlighted the importance of addressing common concerns, including political and social issues and the fair use of resources.

Bishop David Mwangi Rukwaro emphasized that Christians should allow the charitable hand of God to be visible through their actions rather than permitting forces of division and separation to prevail.

In concluding the engagements, Archbishop Muheria stressed the urgent need for Churches to work together in addressing challenges affecting communities in the region, particularly su***de, alcoholism, and domestic violence.

The Archbishop indicated that today's Ecumenical Day forms part of a wider commitment to continued dialogue, with more forums bringing together faith leaders expected to follow.

✨ Church to Introduce Rite of Passage Programme for Grade 9 Junior Youth ✨

The Archdiocese of Nyeri is set to establish a structured Rite of Passage Programme for Grade 9 Junior Youth as they _transition_ to Senior Youth, with emphasis on Christian formation, mentorship, morals and values.

Our Archbishop Anthony Muheria, while addressing Priests, Religious Men and Women, members of the Catholic Men Association (CMA), Catholic Women Association (CWA), as well as Junior Youth Patrons and Matrons, underscored the importance of the Church accompanying young people through this important stage of their lives.

The Archbishop noted that traditionally, rites of passage have largely focused on boys, particularly during circumcision, while the formation of the girl child has not always received similar attention. The proposed Church programme will therefore provide structured accompaniment for both boys and girls.

Under the proposed mentorship structure, Priests CMA members, and Religious Men will accompany and mentor the boys, while CWA members and Religious Women will mentor the girls.

The two programs will be under the guidance of our priests in the Parish and Deanery levels.

The programme will recognize the importance of positive cultural traditions while providing comprehensive formation rooted in the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. It will seek to address the different dimensions of the initiation journey as the young people grow towards greater maturity and responsibility.

Through the programme, Grade 9 Junior Youth will be helped to transition smoothly into the Senior Youth while receiving guidance on their spiritual, moral and personal development. The initiative will also provide a Church-led framework through which boys and girls can be formed into responsible young men and women grounded in faith, good morals and Christian values.

The initiative reflects the Church's commitment to accompanying young people through the different stages of life and ensuring that, as they mature, they remain firmly rooted in Christ and supported by the wider Christian community.

Wednesday, 23rd September 2026: Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at the Contemplative Cemetery, Rongai, Nakuru.

✨ Holy Cross Ngandu Catholic Parish Celebrates 75 Years of Faith ✨

Holy Cross Ngandu Catholic Parish celebrated 75 years of faith with great joy and thanksgiving, during which 83 candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation and 3 couples received the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Holy Mass was presided over by the our Archbishop Anthony Muheria.

In his homily, Archbishop Muheria reflected on the call to forgiveness presented in the day’s readings. He reminded the faithful that Christians are called not to seek revenge, but to forgive. When we truly embrace the love of Christ, forgiveness becomes possible, even in difficult circumstances.

Through the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit, Christians are called to live with kindness, love, humility and compassion towards one another.

Addressing the newly married couples, the Archbishop encouraged them to remain united in Christ’s love and to become living examples of that love to God’s people. He emphasised that marriage is an important vocation that requires commitment, prayer and continual effort.

As the parish celebrated 75 years of faith, the Archbishop noted that its journey has been sustained by love. He urged the faithful to continue loving one another regardless of tribe or background, warning them not to allow seeds of hatred to take root in their hearts.

Reflecting on the Gospel, Archbishop Muheria reminded the congregation of Christ’s command to forgive “seventy-seven times”—a call to forgive without limits. He described Christian love as patient and kind, noting that love is like a fire which can go out if it is not carefully tended.

He explained that the Sacraments of the Church, especially the Eucharist, are the firewood that keeps the fire of love burning. He also challenged the faithful to give greater attention to the Sacrament of Matrimony, which is sometimes overlooked, despite its vital importance for the life and future of the Church.

To the newly confirmed,Archbishop encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith through prayer and love for others. He urged all the faithful to visit and adore Christ in the Eucharist, participate actively in the Sacraments and pray the Rosary regularly.

In conclusion, Archbishop Muheria called on the faithful to join Christ in prayer, especially through the Holy Eucharist, and to express their faith by serving others with love and humility.

✨ Archdiocese of Nyeri Celebrates 2026 Family Day ✨

The Archdiocese of Nyeri gathered in thanksgiving to celebrate the 2026 Family Day, a moment to reflect on the achievements of the Church and renew the commitment to building a united and vibrant Christian family. The Holy Mass was presided over by our Archbishop Anthony Muheria, the main celebrant.

In his homily, Archbishop Muheria reminded the faithful that Family Day is an opportunity not only to celebrate what has been achieved, but also to reflect on the true purpose of being a family and the responsibility of every member in building the Body of Christ.

Reflecting on the first reading, the Archbishop cautioned Christians against placing their trust in false gods and worldly pursuits. He emphasized that the communion of the Church is built and sustained through the Holy Eucharist. Through the Holy Mass and the Sacraments, the faithful are united with Christ and with one another as one body.

He called upon Christians to work towards building a lasting and powerful unity that brings the light of Christ into society through peace, hope, love, and service to those in need. He insisted that greater effort must be made to strengthen the Body of Christ, which is held together by love.

The Archbishop further reminded the faithful that every Christian is invited to contribute to the life and growth of the Church, especially through active participation in the Sacraments. He noted that the success of a parish should not be measured solely by financial contributions, but also by its commitment to bringing people closer to God through Baptisms, Holy Matrimony, Confirmation, and the other Sacraments of the Church.

Addressing Church leaders, Archbishop Muheria challenged them to become a shade and refuge for those entrusted to their care. Through their words and actions, leaders should provide guidance, encouragement, and a safe space where others can continue growing in their Christian journey.

He warned against becoming divisive or poisonous leaders who create disagreements and weaken the unity of the Church. Instead, leaders should reflect the love, patience, and compassion of Christ.

In conclusion, the Archbishop reminded the faithful that the Church's true measure is found in the mercy it extends to others. He encouraged Christians to examine their commitment to helping the needy and to make acts of mercy a central expression of their faith.

The celebration concluded with a renewed call to build a Church united in the Eucharist, strengthened by love, and committed to serving humanity.
