The Last of the Mau Mau Generals Has Fallen
The death of General Kiambati wa Njora, aged 106, marks the end of an era. Passing away on Monday, February 2, 2026, General Kiambati was the last surviving member of the twelve senior Mau Mau generals of “General rank” from Nyandarua County. With his departure, a historic chapter of Kenya’s struggle for independence quietly closes.
It is not merely his death that calls for reflection, but his life defined by courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to freedom. General Kiambati belonged to a generation that risked everything so that future Kenyans could live free. His heroism deserves celebration, his sacrifice eternal gratitude. May his soul rest in everlasting peace.
His passing extends a painful string of deaths among Mau Mau veterans in Nyandarua over the past three years. With no surviving member of the top echelon of these freedom fighters, it is a sobering reality that they have all exited this world without formal recognition by the government for the role they played in securing Kenya’s independence recognition they pursued relentlessly and with deep passion.
General Kiambati’s death was confirmed by his son, Maina Kiambati, who said the veteran succumbed to old age. According to Maina, his father spent his final weekend surrounded by his children and grandchildren at their home in Ngorika. In a poignant moment, he even participated in a memorial service for a grandson who had passed away ten years earlier, a quiet testament to a life that had come full circle.
Following his death, the body was moved from his home to a funeral home in Nakuru town, Nakuru County, as burial arrangements began.
Kiambati’s demise follows closely on the heels of other notable losses among the Mau Mau leadership: Brigadier John Kiboko (born Ihoya Kagwe), who died in August 2023 and was buried in Ngorika, Ol Kalou constituency; Mukami Kimathi, the widow of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, laid to rest in Njabini, Kinangop constituency
