Historical Background:
Kongowea local meeting was opened in 1965.Service meetings were held under a mango tree near the present Ratna Square. The meeting place was later to P.E.F.A. church building opposite the Kongowea Wholesale market. In 1985 the present church plot was purchased. Construction of the church building started immediately and was completed in 1997.Due to in
crease of membership and other logistical needs, Kisauni, Bamburi and Shimo la Tewa local meetings were opened making a total of four local meetings under Kongowea Monthly Meeting. Structure of the Church:
Kongowea Friends Church also referred to as local church is a family of the Friends Church in Kenya. The structure of the Friends Church is as follows:
the lowest level of the church is the local meeting
local meetings make a monthly meeting
monthly meetings are sub-ordinate to Quarterly Co-ordinating Committee
Q.C.C. are under a Yearly Meeting
Yearly Meetings are under the Friends Church in Kenya
At every level of the meeting (church), we have lay leaders who are nominated to run office for a period of three years. We have the main office, the USFW- the women wing, the Quakermen, the youth and the Sunday school wing. The Leadership structure is as follows:
1) Presiding Clerk- Chairman and the overall leader of the church.
2) Vice-Presiding Clerk- Vice to the chairman
3) Recording Clerk – Secretary
4) Reading Clerk – assistant to the secretary
5) Treasure – in charge of finances
6) Assistant Treasure
7) The Pastor is a full time employee of the church who is in charge of spiritual matters. Vision of the Church:
