Today in Nairobi, the Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya (AOSK) joined government agencies, players in the private sector, environmental advocates, and community members in marking World Environment Day 2026.

The participation was spearheaded by the Sisters Led Youth Empowerment Initiative (SLYI), which brought together students from Technical and Training Institutions (TTIs) under this year's theme, "Climate Action Through Sustainable Waste Management".

The event was characterized by a procession through Nairobi's Central Business District aimed at creating public awareness on environmental conservation and sustainable waste management practices. Participants also took part in a tree-planting exercise, engaged communities through environmental awareness campaigns, and witnessed the launch of waste sorting bins to promote proper waste segregation and recycling.

The activities highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges, reducing pollution, and building climate-resilient communities. Through awareness creation, practical demonstrations, and community engagement, participants were encouraged to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment.

AOSK remains committed to empowering young people to become champions of environmental stewardship, recognizing that meaningful climate action begins with informed and engaged communities.

As part of the empowerment efforts to elevate the livelihoods of vulnerable and disadvantaged youths, the Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya through Sisters Led Empowerment Initiative (SLYI) is distributing equipment to beneficiaries drawn from across the country.

The beneficiaries were first trained on variety of technical and vocational skills. They developed business proposals in line with the skills acquired aimed at turning ideas into viable enterprises. Through this initiative, youth are being equipped with skills, resources, and opportunities to become economically empowered and active contributors within their communities.

Some of the beneficiaries are persons living with disabilities, who are also being supported to achieve economic independence, dignity, and inclusion.

Beyond individual empowerment, SLYI is nurturing youth-led enterprises that are creating opportunities for other young people and driving sustainable community development across the country.

At the end of the AOSK Strategic Plan (2023โ€“2027) Evaluation Meeting, which brought together members of the Board, management, program teams, and representatives from various departments and target groups, the leadership of AOSK stressed the importance of reflection, innovation, accountability, and collective responsibility in shaping the future of the Association.

According to AOSK Chairperson Sr. Josephine Kangogo, DSH, the evaluation process was rigorous, engaging, and fruitful, creating room for deeper conversations, honest reflection, and practical thinking towards the mission of the Church and society. She noted that the panel approach and group discussions challenged participants to think differently, engage more openly, and focus on clear outcomes and implementation.

The AOSK Executive Secretary, Sr. Pasilisa Namikoye, LSOSF, on the other hand, appreciated the commitment, openness, and active participation demonstrated throughout the exercise, acknowledging the contribution of every participant in making the evaluation meaningful and impactful. She reaffirmed the commitment to continue strengthening the Association and advancing its mission through teamwork, collaboration, and shared vision.

With the current Strategic Plan set to conclude in 2027 and its implementation now estimated at 95 percent complete, attention is gradually shifting towards the development of a new strategic direction. Focus is also turning towards Chemichemi ya Uzima College as it continues laying the foundation towards greater institutional sustainability and long-term growth.
