Verse of the Day-Romans 15:5-6

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Commentary

Unity comes from God's Spirit as we all draw closer to Jesus (John 17:20-21). As we are drawn to Jesus through the Spirit, we immediately find ourselves drawn closer to one another (1 John 1:1-4). Unity also has a purpose much deeper than our getting along with each other. Jesus prayed we would be one so that the world would know that God sent him into the world as the Son to save the world (John 3:16-17, 17:21, 23). We want to be united so that our praise can bring glory to God and lead others to him. Unity is far more than a goal; it is a process through which the world learns of Jesus. At the same time, we glorify the Father who sent Jesus to save us when we live together in unity. Leading others to Jesus and glorifying God are what living for Jesus is all about! Let's make unity one of our deepest passions.

Prayer

Great and Almighty God, you are the eternal strength for all who call on your name. I apologize and ask your forgiveness for everything I've done and every word I've spoken that has hurt others in your family. I do not want to cause a wound to the unity of your Body, the church. So please, bless my efforts as I seek less of my will, long to live for your glory, and seek to draw close and encourage others. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day -1 Thessalonians 1:8

The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia

Commentary

What kind of reputation does your church have? What is your dream for the congregation you attend? What's the mission of your small group, life group, or house church? So many of us have such short-sighted goals for our churches. The church at Thessalonica was only a few months old, and the believers' reputation for sharing their faith had become kthroughout over the Roman Empire. Now that's the kind of reputation I want the congregation I work with to have! How about you?

Prayer

O Lord God Almighty, please fill our congregation and groups with the power of your Holy Spirit so that with sensitivity and courage, we may share the good news of your grace in Jesus Christ. Please be with our missionaries, ministers, and members so that we may display and declare the Gospel of salvation to our friends, neighbors, and people everywhere. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day - Isaiah 10:1-2

Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people.

Commentary

Absolute power corrupts completely by allowing us to have what we shouldn't, enabling us to forget where we came from, and leading us to ignore the cries of the oppressed. Absolute power corrupts because only God can handle full power and control! Our desire to have it is like Adam and Eve's sin- the lust to be God. True power, acceptable to the One with true absolute power, is used to bless the broken, lift the unfortunate, forgive the guilty, and assist the powerless. How do we know? God does those kinds of things!

Prayer

Almighty and incomparable God, I don't want to spend my time positioning myself to have power over others. Please give me the grace, the ability, and the opportunity to bless others — not so I will feel superior or essential, but so that they will be blessed and you will be honored and praised. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day - Luke 3:8

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

Commentary

Grace is given to us as a free gift. It cannot be earned or merited. But salvation that does not move us out of our self-destructive and rebellious ways is counterfeit — it's just religious motion and commotion. Repentance is a major life change. Repentance is the realization that we have been going the wrong way on a one-way street. Repentance is an acknowledgment that trying to guide our own lives will always end in disappointment, disaster, and death without Jesus being the Lord of our lips and our lives. As we do, we will change our behavior to reflect the character of the Father who sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins! We know that God's grace is marvelous, but let's also learn that his will is gracious and life-giving.

Prayer

Loving and merciful God, I realize that you saved me from my past sins and also want to save me from the consequences of future sins by calling me to obedience. Please help me as I turn my life over to your will. Please strengthen me with your Spirit so that I may resist temptation and reflect your holiness. Bring to life the fruit that reflects your salvation and character in me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse - For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him—Philippians 1:29

Commentary

It's not unless it is for Jesus or to help redeem others with Jesus. Remember how the early apostles were joyful because they were counted worthy to suffer for the name (Acts 5:41). Let's reawaken ourselves to Jesus' reminder that if we follow him, we will likely suffer for him at some time in our lives (Mark 10:29-30). Many believers around the world are actually suffering, are persecuted, and even martyred today. So, let's realize that while God IS working things out for our good and his glory (Romans 8:28), part of that work means our being conformed to the likeness of his Son, the Suffering Servant (Romans 8:29; Mark 10:45). Jesus suffered for us so that we could be saved. Now, when we face suffering for the cause of Christ and his Kingdom, we can help inspire others to live faithfully in adversity and show to all, even those who hate us, the genuineness of our faith. So few in the world today have anything worth living for, dying for, or suffering for. We, however, have many reasons to live, die, and suffer in honor of Christ. Our lives will be caught up in Jesus' victory because we have shared in his trials (Romans 8:17)!

Prayer

Please grow our courage, Lord! Help us, your people, O God, to be faithful in times of trouble, strong in times of persecution, and steadfast in times of suffering and martyrdom. May the world see our faith under fire and be drawn to our hope in Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day - John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Commentary

Jesus came to save the world. Jesus came to save you. Jesus came to save me. Why? Because of the Father's love for us! Don't let human commentary on this clear truth distort the reality and depth of God's love for you! God sent the Son to save the world — that includes saving you and me — and he did it through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection!

Prayer

Holy and Righteous Father, thank you for your love. I know I didn't earn or deserve it, but thank you. Until I see you face to face and express my appreciation and praise for you in your presence, please know my heartfelt gratitude and my deep and abiding joy because of your plan, your Son, and your salvation. I thank you in the name of Jesus, my Savior. Amen.

"[Jesus] became man so that man may learn to speak the language of love, transforming it into gestures of generosity and self-giving." (9 Sep 2018)

God is saying, “Throw that net out one more time.” Start believing again, start dreaming again, start taking steps of faith. You don’t know what God is about to do. The reason it hasn’t happened yet is that it’s bigger than you think-Joel Osteen.
