2027 TURKANA GOVERNORSHIP RACE: DR. JOHN NAMOIT LEADS IN LATEST POLL

A poster attributed to IdealMerit Africa’s September 2026 opinion poll places Hon. Dr. John Namoit at the top of the 2027 Turkana gubernatorial race with 46.4%, followed by Dr. Protus Akujah at 25.3% and H.E. Jeremiah Lomorukai at 15.6%.

The poll, which cites a sample size of 5,319 respondents, also places Paul Nabuin at 8.3%, James Lomenen at 1.0%, with 2.5% undecided and 0.9% for others.

If accurate, the figures point to a highly competitive race as Turkana heads toward the 2027 General Election.

For most of the colonial period, the Pokot were not called Pokot. Europeans called them the Suk.

The word comes from chok the short sword or staff a Pokot cultivator used to break the soil. A people named, by outsiders, after a farming tool.

Colonial administration arrived in 1910. What followed was not development but closure: the district was designated a "closed" district for the entire colonial period, sealed off, European settlement kept out.

The first hospital did not open until 1956, under the care of the Holy Rosary Sisters.

At independence, West Pokot was the least-developed district in the whole of Rift Valley Province. Modern infrastructure did not begin arriving until the 1970s.

And Karapokot, Pokot territory, was not definitively annexed to Kenya until 1970 seven years after the flag went up, the map was still being settled.
