Family patterns - The story of Jacob..

Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rebekah, Abraham's grandson. The name Jacob means trickster. Now Jacob lived upto his name. First he tricked his brother Esau out of his birthright for a bowl of stew - Genesis 25:31, and with the help of his mother, also deceived his aging father to receive the patriarchal blessing instead of Esau - Genesis 27:19-29

Jacob then runs to his uncle Laban. Rebekah( Jacob's mother) was Laban's sister.
Here, Jacob encounters the "master trickster." For Laban gave His daughter Leah to Jacob in marriage, who had worked for 7 years for Rachel, as his wife instead - Genesis 29:23. Laban also changed Jacob's wages ten times within the course of 'tenure' - Genesis 31:7.

But despite his name, despite his character, we see a spiritual transformation after he wrestles with God - Genesis 34. God changed Jacob's name to Israel, which means "prevailer with God". This change symbolizes a shift from self-reliance to a path guided by God.

Ezekiel 18:2b
‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge’?
Lamentations 5:7
[7]Our fathers sinned and are no more, But we bear their iniquities.

We can carry along flaws, faults, addictions, and weaknesses from our fore fathers. Patterns can trickle down to our children as well, unless we make the informed decision to encounter God. To truly allow Him to change us from the inside out. Then the old will be gone and the new will spring forth.
Your name will change.

DIMENSIONS OF REALITIES SEEN THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE.

1. PROMISES.
Promises are the ways in which God commits Himself to believers. His intentions for us.
And throughout scripture we can pick a few promises;
a) Promises related to salvation and new life:
• John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
• John 1:12 - But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
b) Promises related to God's character and presence:
• God's Presence: Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
• God's Strength and Help: Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
• God's Faithfulness: 1 Thessalonians 5:24 - He who calls you is faithful, He will surely do it.
c) Promises related to life's challenges:
• Peace in Trials: Isaiah 26:3 - You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.
• Comfort in Trouble: Psalm 32:8 - I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
• Provision for Needs: Philippians 4:19 - "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."....among others.

2. PRINCIPLES.
This focuses on how God operates:
• Mercy: Romans 9:15 - “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
• Love: 1 John 3:1 - Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
• Increase: Proverbs 11:24 - There is one who scatters, yet increases more;
• Faith: Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to Him must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
• Authority, Power, and Unity among others.

3. PROPHESIES.
This are divinely inspired messages from God, delivered by prophets, that may reveal God's will, warn of future calamities, promise future blessings, and/ or foretell specific events.

How these messages were conveyed:
• Visions: Acts 9:10 - Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”
• Dreams: An example of a dream in the Bible is Joseph's two dreams in Genesis 37, where he sees his brothers' sheaves bowing to his, and later the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing to him, foreshadowing his future dominance and his family's eventual submission to him during a famine.
• Angelic Messengers: Gabriel announces that Mary will conceive and bear a son, Jesus, who will be the Son of the Most High, which is a fulfilment of Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
• Direct Oral Communication: God sometimes spoke directly to prophets, making them His mouthpiece. As with John in Revelation 1:9-20.

Shepherds shear sheep primarily for the benefit of the sheep themselves. Shearing prevents overheating, parasite infestations, mobility issues, and makes birthing, ewe and lamb care easier. Generally, it improves the quality of life of the sheep.
This can be likened to pruning in plants. It involves the selective removal of branches and parts to improve a plant's overall well-being and appearance. Pruning is essential for maintaining plant health, structure, and productivity.

[1]“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
[2]Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit" - John 15:1-2.
When God prunes us, He doesn't do so as punishment. It is not from a place of anger or rejection, but as a loving process of purification and discipline aimed at removing anything hindering our spiritual development and so that we can be made more like Christ. Pruning is the removing of all the unproductive and hindering elements so that our energy and focus can to be directed towards producing a richer harvest of good works.

If we do not accept pruning then we have no part in Him. "Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me - John 15:4"

Surely, pruning can't be all pleasant but ultimately, it is for our good and participation in God's holiness. Hebrews 12:11- Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

John 14 :13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do.

WHAT IS IN A NAME??
A name generally represents;
1. Identity
2. Character
3. Authority, and
4. Reputation.

What Jesus says here in "If you ask anything in My name, I will do" goes beyond us just praying for anything and "signing" off the prayer with "in Jesus' name, I pray.amen."
If it were not so, then He wouldn't have said "Until now YOU HAVE ASKED NOTHING IN MY NAME. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full -John 16:24."

The name of Jesus speaks of His authority, His interest, His pleasures, and His commands. So when we invoke that name, we ought to be aligned to everything that that name represents. Remember the seven sons of Sceva? They attempt to remove an evil spirit from a man, only to receive a resounding beating. Rather than the demon fleeing the man. "Acts 19:13 - Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul, I recognize, but who are you?”

As you walk with Jesus, as you become one with Him, you get to know Him intimately. His interests become your interests, and you come to the full knowledge of His will. THEN, you ask anything, WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT HE TAKES PLEASURE IN, and He is bound to give it to you.

" Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing, and perfect will -Romans 12:2"

'To conform' means to take on the shape of another mould. To follow a pattern of another person. But what does the bible mean by "this world?"
There's a difference we ought to note between 'the Earth' and 'this world.'
Earth is a location, and 'This world' is a system. A system that is trying to advance a specific kingdom. And what has taken influence in this present world is the enemy. That is why the bible talks about 'the god of this world - Satan.' Not the god over earth. 2 Corinthians 4:4 "Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe....."
The enemy is trying to advance his kingdom of darkness. So, he infiltrates what we call culture and what has become acceptable in society. Because if "society accepts it, and I do it, then I'm not judged." So now we start calling evil - good, and good - evil. We say s*xual promiscuity is freedom, when in truth, it is bondange. We call Pride 'self-confidence ' when, in truth, it is rebellion against humility and reliance on God.
We call greed 'ambition' when it is idolatry in disguise. We call bitterness 'boundaries' when, in reality, it is just unforgiveness. We call comparison, 'inspiration,' when it is envy. We call the new age practises "spiritual awakening " when it is an invitation to demonic practises. Then we call gender confusion "self expression "
THIS IS THE MOULD OF THE WORLD.

Philippians 2:5 "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus," so that He could boldly say as in John 14:30
".......for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me."

We need to ask God to examine our hearts. Do that Satan has nothing in us that could make us fall. We need to ask the Holy Spirit to convict us unto God’s righteousness and of the coming judgment, as well as ask Him to sanctify us. The Holy Spirit's sanctifying work is the ongoing process by which we are made holy and conformed to the image of Christ. Then only can we advance the kingdom of God in the way Christ did.

Matthew 14:13
[13]When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

Jesus had heard about the killing of John the Baptist, and He drew away to be by Himself. He went to pray and have fellowship with the Father. He went to be comforted by God.
And that's where we, as believers should always run with our wounds. Because the Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit - Psalm 34:18.
And,
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds - Psalm 147:3

How to activate your spiritual senses.

1. Guard your eye gates - Luke 11:34
'Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.'

Be mindful of what you watch.

2. Submit to the Holy Spirit - Romans 6:16 'Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?'

Boundaries set by God are for our own protection. It's not that God denys us "fun." But what is the spirit presenting the said fun?

3. Prayer - Jeremiah 33:3
‘Call to me, and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

This is where the depth of your being is calling onto Him. It's not for what you want Him to do for you, but praying to know Him intimately.

4. Vet your motives - 1 Samuel 16:7
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Ask the Lord to purify your heart. What are your true intentions for what you are asking for?.

Spiritual senses transcend physical limitations.
Spiritual senses need to be exercised - Hebrews 5:14 'But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.'

Matthew 1 vs 3-6,
[3]Judah, the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez, the father of Hezron, Hezron, the father of Ram,
[4]Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab, the father of Nahshon, Nahshon, the father of Salmon,
[5]Salmon, the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz, the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,
[6]and Jesse, the father of King David.....

It's speaks volumes that Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth are the only mothers/ wives mentioned in this entire chapter.
And here's why they get a special "shout-out":
1. Tamar tricked her father in law into having s*x with her, and she bore him 2 sons (Genesis 38),
2. Rahab was a Cannaniate pr******te (Joshua 2), and
3. Ruth was a foreigner to Bethlehem, a Moabite.
Moabites make several appearances in the book of Jeremiah as a cautionary tale for the judgment of God for their immoral behaviour and their worship of false gods.

But these women, here they are going down in history as being in the lineage of the Messiah.
God redeemed them all. He changed their stories.

God has a way of trading ashes for beauty and, in this case, bad experiences for glory. It doesn't matter what your past looks like or the filth of your yester days.
Isaiah 61:1-3 "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn.
HE BESTOWS ON THEM A CROWN OF BEAUTY
INSTEAD OF ASHES,
THE OIL OF JOY
INSTEAD OF MOURNING,
AND A GARMENT OF PRAISE
INSTEAD OF A SPIRIT OF DESPAIR.
THEY WILL BE CALLED OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,
A PLANTING OF THE LORD
FOR THE DISPLAY OF HIS SPLENDOUR."

As long as we show ourselves loyal to God, like Ruth, who was willing to leave behind all that she knew and follow the God of Naomi. And as long as we pursue righteousness, holding firm to The Faith, like Rahab, then we can truly trust God with our wounds, our shame, our lives. He will keep us as a display of His splendour.

UNDERSTANDING TIMES/ UNDERSTANDING THE MOVE OF GOD.

Last week, we talked about spiritual maturity. And learned that one thing that spiritual maturity brings to a believer is a different understanding of times, shifts and seasons. That a mature believer does just "go with the flow," but rather by the leading of the Spirit of God.
That spiritual maturity means that you are not tossed about by any wind of doctrine - Ephesians 4:14, but you feed on that which is solid food.

So in our teaching today, we look at the example of(an ideal mature Christian)Elisha - 2 King's 2:1-10.

From this text, its clear that;
1. Elijah knew he'd be taken up. He also knew that unless Elisha saw him as he was taken away, he (Elisha) would miss out on receiving the double annointing portion that he desired.
2. Elisha was determined. He would not let Elijah proceed to Bethel,Jericho or Jordan without him. Because he knew that in that day, Elijah would be taken away. He would not let the sons of prophets distract him either because his goal was set. He had to align himself with the time God would show up for Elijah/ the time God would move to call Elijah to Himself.

What makes Elisha an ideal mature Christian??

1 Kings 19:19-21
[21]"So Elisha turned back from him(Elijah), and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant."
"Using the oven's equipment " signifies that Elisha was done. There was no business to fall back on. He burned the bridge that would have carried him back. That he was completely now sold out to Elijah.
The writer of Hebrews in Hebrews 10:39 writes, "But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul." We are called to be completely sold out to God. That we do not shift focus from our main goal. That we burn bridges that would make us look back lest 'we turn into a pillar of salt.'
Avoid distractions. Avoid falling into the tests and trials that are along the way.
