In Mark 1:21-24 Jesus encountered evil spirits in a man as He was teaching in the synagogue.

Just Jesus’ presence caused the evil spirits who had kept quiet and behaved every week, as they were brought to the synagogue by their “host,” to betray their presence by crying out in terror!

Evil spirits call human beings their house. Listen to what an evil spirit who is kicked out of a man says,

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left…’” - Matthew 12:43-44.

The people in the synagogue also encountered something that they had never encountered before. They were used to the dry and powerless teachings that the teachers of the Law were used to giving at the synagogue Sabbath after Sabbath.

However when they heard Jesus teach they remarked, “…What is this? A new teaching – and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him” - Mark 1:27.

The people at the synagogue had probably seen people try to exorcise evil spirits without much success.

One time when Jesus was accused of using the Prince of demons to cast out evil spirits, He challenged them about who they use, when they cast out demons.

“If I use the power of Beelzebul to force out demons, whose power do your own followers use to force them out?” - Matthew 12:27.

The Jewish people had probably concluded that evil spirits do not obey human beings.

However, here was Jesus who was giving the evil spirits orders with authority, and the evil spirits obeyed! “Be quiet! said Jesus sternly, ‘Come out of him!’ The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.”

What drama there was at the synagogue that day! Everybody went home with a story to tell their family, friends and next door neighbours!

Wherever Jesus went, the situations and atmosphere always changed. This was because most situations that He encountered were engineered by evil spirits! Jesus has set us an example to follow.

1 John 4:17 tells us that as Jesus is, so are we in this world! Believers are also supposed to use their power and authority to confront the kingdom of darkness!

The Bible tells us that He who is in us, is far greater than he who is in the world. Believers are meant to do what Jesus did.

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these…” - John 14:12.

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for fearing evil spirits, yet He who is in you is greater than them.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you get the revelation, that God has given you authority over all the power of the devil.

3). Thank the Lord for the security that we have in Christ Jesus.

I absolutely love the definition that the dictionary gives for the word, authority. It calls authority,

“The power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.”

Authority is a powerful thing! We encounter its powerful effects in the armed forces where, there are clear ranks that correspond to power and influence.

A soldier knows his place in the army, and so does the Commander! There is clear protocol and invisible lines that are not to be crossed, as pertains to duties, privileges and authority.

The Word of God refers to believers as soldiers, with Jesus Christ as our Commander.

“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs” - 2 Timothy 2:3-4.

If our calling is to obey our commanding Officer, then it is imperative that we know who He is. The Bible reveals to us who Jesus Christ is, as we read and meditate on it.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they willingly gave their authority to Satan.

Before Jesus Christ appeared on the earth, Satan and his evil spirits roamed the earth with authority to steal, kill, and destroy! Praise God, the tables were turned when Jesus Christ appeared on the scene!

An incident that happened when Jesus went to a synagogue in Capernaum on a Sabbath day, gives us a good indication that evil spirits were terrified when Jesus Christ appeared on the earth. We read this account in Mark1:21-34.

The first thing that amazed people was His teaching. “…He taught them as One who had authority, not as the teachers of the law” - Mark 1:22.

Authority begins with teaching. There is no real authority outside the Word of God. God’s word is what gives a believer his or her authority.

As Jesus was teaching, a man who had an evil spirit cried out in terror!

“What do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth, Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!” – Mark 1:24.

Surprisingly, this man had carried the demons who lived in him Sabbath after Sabbath, but nothing that went on in the synagogue worried or even bothered these demons! They probably slept through out the service, and woke up as the benediction was being shared!

The powerful teaching and the mere presence of Jesus Christ put terror into the kingdom of darkness!

This is the effect that believers ought to bring wherever they go! Their teaching, given with power and authority, ought to wake up all the sleeping demons!

Their very presence ought to terrify demons wherever they go!

Unfortunately, few believers cause any effect in the kingdom of darkness because they are unaware of the power and authority that they have in Jesus Christ!

No believer should ever fear an evil spirit. They must leave when commanded in the name of Jesus Christ!

“Behold I give you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. Nothing shall by any means harm you!” – Luke 10:19.

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for not engaging evil spirits through the authority that you have over them in the name of Jesus Christ.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a revelation of the authority and power that God has invested in you, to defeat the kingdom of darkness.

3). Thank the Lord that evil spirits are under our feet in the mighty name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

For the last few days we have been discussing how important and powerful the name of Jesus Christ is.

Our prayers today will be in appreciation of this wonderful and glorious name that has been made available to us as believers!

The name of Jesus Christ gives us access to the most powerful Being in the universe! It is the name of Jesus Christ that brought us salvation.

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” - Acts 4:12.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation, that You have made available to us through the name of Jesus Christ. This gift of salvation makes healing, righteousness, deliverance, and prosperity available to us.

May I walk under the divine covering of this wonderful and excellent name! Through the knowledge of this name, you have made available to us, everything that we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).

Thank You heavenly Father for the miracles that we are able to do through the name of Your Son Jesus Christ. By using that name, we are able to do what Jesus did and even greater things!

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” - John 14:12-14.

Holy Spirit, give us the revelation of this amazing verse. May we never fear to step out in faith and do what Jesus did, through the power in His name!

Thank you for the examples of Jesus’ disciples who stepped out and did miracles in His name. Thank you Father for Peter and John, who healed a paralytic through the name of Jesus in Acts chapter three.

“By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see” - Acts 3:16.

May we have the faith like Peter and John, to step out and allow You to use us to do miracle through Jesus’ name.

Thank you Jehovah God, that the name of Jesus Christ brings deliverance from evil spirits! You have given us authority to trample on evil spirits through the name of Jesus!

“Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her” - Acts 16:18.

May we never fear evil spirits, knowing that, “He who is in us is far greater than he who is in the world” – 1 John 4:4. Thank You Father, that at the name of Jesus, every knee must bow!

Holy Spirit, help us walk in the reality of all that the name of Jesus Christ has made available to us in Jesus name – Amen!

Let us remind ourselves of a verse that we read in yesterday’s devotion.

“In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name” - John 16:23.

This verse is encouraging us to talk directly to the Father. We can talk directly to God the Father any time we want!

We do not have to go through Mary the mother of Jesus, or through His twelve apostle, or through your pastor, or through your Bible study leader.

We have a standing invitation from our heavenly Father in Hebrews 4:16.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

This help will only come to us if we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Asking for what we need in the name of Jesus Christ is not an option. If we do not ask in the name of Jesus Christ, the Father will not hear us!

The “Cheque” must have the name of Jesus at the bottom of it, for it to be honoured by the Father. Whatever we need, Jesus already paid for it when he shed His blood on the cross of Calvary!

Jesus’ name will open many doors for you before God the Father. Proverbs 22:1 tells us that, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”

God the Father esteems the Son and will honour anyone who comes in His name!

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name…” - Philippians 2:9-11.

Child of God, always use the name of Jesus Christ. It is the name that opens blind eyes, heals paralytics and sets captives free!

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven, on the earth and under the earth and proclaim that He is Lord!

One song writer has proclaimed, “The name of Jesus, higher than other names, King of all kings, no other name like him!”

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for the times when you have not honoured the name of Jesus in your prayers.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you always exalt the name of Jesus.

3). Thank the Father for giving us a name that is higher than any other name!

Unfortunately, some believers do not think that praying in the name of Jesus is a big deal.

I say this because as I listen to many people pray, they do not end their prayer in the name of Jesus. They direct their prayer to the Father, and believe that that is enough for them to get their request.

In Jesus’ last discussion with His disciples before He was arrested, He said to them, “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name” - John 16:23.

Which day was Jesus talking about? He was talking about the time when He would have left the earth.

You will notice that the “The Lord’s Prayer” does not end with “In Jesus Name.” When His disciples asked him to teach them how to pray, He told them to pray,

“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever – Amen!”

You will notice that “The Lord’s Prayer,” although it ends with “Amen,” does not end with “In the name of Jesus.”

So what is the big deal? God has heard hasn’t He? After all the prayer was addressed to the Father. Apparently it was a big deal to God the Father, and to Jesus!

It was for this reason that Jesus told His disciples in John 16:24, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.”

He went on to tell them in verses 26-27 of the same chapter,

“In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father Himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.”

Jesus taught His disciples a very cardinal principle. That is, that we should never ask Jesus to ask the Father for anything on our behalf!

The reason that Jesus gave them for this, was that the Father Himself loved them because they had trusted and loved Jesus, and had believe that He came from God.

We need to understand that Jesus took our sins upon himself and died a shameful and cruel death on the cross, to reconcile us to the Father.

Sin had separated us from a holy God. We could not approach God with our sinfulness.

However after Jesus’ death, the curtain that separated us from Him has been torn in two from top to bottom. Jesus was telling his disciples that after his death and resurrection, they could “Run back to Daddy without fear!”

They would be able to talk and make their request directly to Him! Hallelujah!

Is there anything you need from the Father? Ask Him directly, only making sure that it is in the name of Jesus.

“Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find…” - Matthew 7:7.

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Father to forgive you for the times when you have made requests to him without asking in Jesus name.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to remind you to always pray in Jesus name.

3). Thank the Father for giving us such a powerful name in Jesus Christ our Saviour!

It is very important to understand the Word of God. In the parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:19, we see why we need to understand God’s Word.

“When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and sn**ches away what was sown in their heart.”

Why would the evil want to sn**ch away what I do not understand? After all I do not understand it.

He sn**ches it away before further revelation comes, which would help us understand it. Satan knows that understanding the Word of God and applying it to our lives, is the source of our supply.

The Word of God is not just words on a piece of paper. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is living. Living things produce. Jesus said in John 6:63, “The Words I have spoken to you are spirit…”

Because words are spirit, they have power to reproduce what they say.

Philippians 4:19 says, “…My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.”

These words will come alive as soon as I declare them and believe them as true.

This is why we must meditate on the Word of God, as we listen for revelation from the Holy Spirit. We read in Isaiah 55:10-11, how the Word coming out of God’s mouth, produces bread for the eater.

We also see from the parable of the sower, how the seed is the Word of God. That makes the Bible, a bag of seeds! Seed that we can plant and get bread for eating.

God has hidden His blessings in seed form (the Word). The seed of the Word of God will produce for us what we need. Whatever we need, all we have to do is go to the bag of seeds and get a word that tells me what God has promised concerning my situation.

I plant it in the soil of my heart. We have already seen that good soil refers to someone who hears the Word of God and understands it. Luke 8:15, also referring to the parable of the Sower says,

“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” We will only retain the Word that we meditate on.

As we meditate on Philippians 4:19, we will understand that it is God who supplies. Not my knowledge, nor my wisdom, nor my rich relatives.

Secondly, He supplies all my needs. Not only some. Thirdly, these riches are in Christ Jesus. With this understanding, I can now plant it in my heart in faith, and keep watering it until it produces a harvest.

I water it by continuing to meditate on it. What is it that you need? Go to the bag of seeds and get a Word that promises what you need. Meditate on it, believe it, and start declaring it in faith. It will produce what you need!

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for not meditating on the word of God for the purpose of understanding it.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a Spirit of wisdom and understanding for the word of God.

3). Thank the Lord for the bag of seeds (The Bible) that He has made available to His children.

Any prayer that we make to God that does not look to him as our ultimate Supplier is bound to yield very few results.

God referred to King David as a man after His own heart. How could God give such a glowing tribute to a murderer and adulterer. We all know that this king was not a perfect man.

God knew that David’s heart was totally given over to Him as his all in all! How could God not be moved by such utter dependence that David had towards him?

In Psalm 123:1-2, King David pours out his heart to his only Supplier in his life.

“I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy.”

What total dependence this man had in his God!

What lesson can we learn from King David? Is our total trust truly on God as our only “destiny helper?” According to the Psalm that we have just read, God was king David’s Destiny Helper!

God is our only Destiny Helper! He alone knows our destiny, and He alone will help us get there if we yield to Him. King David knew that apart from God, he had no one to depend on.

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” -Psalm 75:23.

King David accomplished his purpose not because of any “destiny helper,” but because his total trust was in God.

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed” -Acts 13:36.

Have you been waiting and believing that your “destiny helper” is just round the corner? May the Lord help you realise that God the Father, is your only Destiny Helper.

“Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him…” - Psalm 37:7

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for waiting for people to help you, instead of waiting on God.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you look to the Lord, and Him alone as your ultimate Supplier.

3). Thank the Lord that apart from Him, we desire nothing else

Aaron and his sister Miriam, were jealous of God’s closeness with their younger brother.

“Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses…“Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this” - Numbers 12:1.

Aaron and Miriam displayed great pride! They felt that there was no difference between themselves and Moses, so why should the Israelites only listen to him?

The Bible tells us that God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. God opposed Aaron and Miriam immediately!

“At once the LORD said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam” - Numbers 12:4-5.

God went on to tell these two siblings why they should not compare themselves to Moses.

“…He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” - Numbers 12:7-8.

As a result of her attack on Moses, God struck Miriam with leprosy for seven days!

“So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back”
- Numbers 12:15.

Unfortunately there are many believers who complain and grumble about who God has chosen to be their leader. They look at them stammering at the pulpit and feel like they could sure have done a better job!

They look at their many weaknesses and feel like they have lesser sins. That is the “Aaron and Miriam syndrome”.

Meanwhile listen to Moses estimation of himself.

“Moses said to the LORD, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue”- Exodus 4:10.

God chose Moses not because he was strong enough to do the job, but because he was weak enough to totally depend on God!

Paul asked the Lord to remove a thorn in his flesh, “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” - 2 Corinthians 12:8-9.

It was not through Moses’ strengths, but through his weaknesses that God’s power was manifested in his life.

Although the spirit of pride convinces us that we can do a better job than someone that God has chosen, it is only through humility that God’s power will manifest.

King Saul started with humility. When the prophet Samuel chose him among the sons of Kish, he felt that he could not do the job. He ran away and hid himself.

“Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. So they inquired further of the LORD, “Has the man come here yet? And the LORD said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies. They ran and brought him out…” - 1 Samuel 10:21-23.

However Saul later on became proud and God removed him as king, and replaced him with David.

God called David a man after His own heart, and this was because King David was a humble man.

Has God called you to a position of leadership? Do not depend on your own ability and strength. In humility trust that God is the One leading through you.

Has God placed you under a leader who looks weak? Pray for them that they will trust God to strengthen them where they seem weak.

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble” – James 4:6

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you where you have depended on your own strength instead of depending on God’s grace.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you draw close to God.

3). Thank the Lord that His power is made perfect in your weakness

Word of Truth,

Prepared by Pst.Nellie Shani

We will conclude our teachings on faith with a prayer to the Father who is faithful and true. He is the great I Am, the God who changes not.

Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and earth will pass away but His Word will never pass away”. Whatever God has promised you, He is faithful to fulfil.

Isaiah 55:10-11 gives us an unchanging promise.

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Heavenly Father, I thank you for this promise concerning your Word. I thank You that in the same way that Your Word comes down like rain and like snow to water the earth and make it bud and flourish, I believe that every word that you have spoken over my life will certainly bear fruit.

Thank you for providing for me, seed which I can sow back into Your ministry. Help me know which ministry has good soil so that I can sow my seed there. I also thank you for my daily bread which you have been faithful to provide, since I put my trust in You. I know that you will never fail me.

Your Word never comes back to You empty. Forgive me for the areas where I have doubted Your promises. You are not a man and you do not lie.

“God is not a man that He should lie, nor the son of man that He should repent. Has He said it and will He not do it. Has He promised and will He not fulfil it.” - Numbers 23:19.

Thank You for this promise Father. You do what You say, and accomplish what You promise. Thank you for being a faithful God. May I be faithful to hear Your Word.

Lead me to your servants who teach and preach the true Word and who do not compromise Your Word for personal gain.

May I prioritize listening to Your Word so that faith may come. May I manifest this faith in everything that I do. May my faith be in You, and You alone!

May I always speak directly to the mountains in my life, letting them know what a big and mighty God I serve. May my life be characterized by thanksgiving for answered prayer, whether they have manifested or not.

I now take authority as a servant of the living God and command the spirits of doubt, impatience, fear, lack of faith, insecurity and timidity to LEAVE ME NOW, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! Never come back again! I destroy your altars. They will not speak over my life any more in Jesus name!

The Word of tells us that faith is a fight! “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called…” - 1 Timothy 6:12.

We were called to live the eternal life, and this life is only accessed through faith. It is a life where we have already been given everything that we need.

“ His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature…” - 2 Peter 1:3-4.

As we get to know Jesus Christ, we become aware of the things that are already available to us. The apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesian church to know Christ better.

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” – Ephesians 1:17.

Knowing Christ better, comes through wisdom and revelation from the Holy Spirit. Another thing Paul prayed for the Ephesian church, was that God would enlighten their spiritual eyes.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you” - Ephesians 1:18.

What is this hope to which we have been called as believers in Jesus Christ? It is a glorious inheritance of spiritual blessings.

Why are they called spiritual? It is because they manifest in the spiritual realm first, and then faith brings them to the physical realm.

In Greek, the eternal life, is called the “Zoe” life. One person has said that the Zoe life, is “Nothing broken, nothing missing!” The eternal life is the abundant life that Jesus Christ died for us to have.

The amplified version of John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].”

God wants us to have and enjoy life to the full. In health, wealth and purity. This is the Zoe life that is accessed by our faith declarations.

Faith declarations mean that I am speaking of things that are not, as though they are. It means living as though I am already healthy, wealthy and pure! That is not easy. That is why we started off by saying that faith is a fight.

Praise the Lord that it is not a fight that we fight alone. As we read the Word of God, the Holy Spirit who lives inside us, takes the Word of God and creates faith in us.

As we speak in faith, the Word of God starts to manifest in our lives. Hallelujah! The weak starts to say that they are strong, and the poor starts to say that they are rich!

“…Let the weak say ‘I am strong!’” - Joel 3:10.

Prayer Points:

1). Ask the Lord to forgive you for any negative declarations that have come out of your mouth concerning any situation that you are going through.

2). Ask the Holy Spirit to manifest in you, a Spirit of wisdom and revelation so you may know him better.

3). Thank the Lord for the Holy Spirit who takes the Word that we read, and creates faith in us.
