Ruben Centre

Ruben Centre We offer key community development programmes to one of the largest slums in Nairobi. Sister Mary Killeen, a Mercy sister, was the founder of the school. Sr.

The establishment of Ruben Primary School in 1986 saw the beginning of what is now known as the Ruben Centre. In 1992, the management of the school was handed over to the Japanese NGO African Education Fund (AEF). In 1995, the first class of Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) students completed their primary education. However the AEF withdrew after six years, leaving the school and fl

edgling clinic in a precarious state. Mary Killeen continued again as the Administrator. In 1998 the school was registered as a Kenyan government school and the first Teachers Service Commission teachers were employed. Vocational Classes for carpentry, dress making and tailoring were also started. In 2000 the Christian Brothers responded to Sr. Mary’s invitation to administer Ruben Centre, as it became known. In 2001, Br. Bob Aron the first Christian Brother Manager initiated some developments, including drainage, playing field and toilets. However the most significant new development was the building of a police post by the Christian Brothers, bringing with it improved security and a new confidence within the local community, concerning the Centre’s permanence. In 2003 the very primitive clinic was replaced by a new modern Clinic which offered more services. Also that year, the Kenyan government initiated free primary education and this ushered in a huge expansion in the student population. In 2012 there were close to 1800 students enrolled at Ruben Primary School.

Over 150 young people from the Mukuru community gathered at Ruben Centre Hall on Saturday for the Expressive Art Festival, organized by Salama Youth Hub in commemoration of International Mental Health Awareness Month.

Under the theme "More Good Days Together," the event created a vibrant space for young people to connect, learn, and express themselves while promoting positive mental health and well-being.

The festival featured a mental health engagement session, board games that encouraged bonding and teamwork, artistic performances by talented youth, a colourful festival experience, and networking opportunities. These activities provided participants with a platform to build relationships, showcase their talents, and engage in meaningful conversations about mental health.

The event highlighted the importance of community, creativity, and peer support in fostering emotional well-being among young people. It also reinforced the message that mental health matters and that young people thrive when they are given safe spaces to connect, express themselves, and support one another.

Through initiatives such as the Expressive Art Festival, Salama Youth Hub and Ruben Centre continue to empower young people and promote a culture of openness, support, and hope within the Mukuru community.

At Ruben Centre, we continue to walk with mothers even after delivery through regular health talks in our maternity unit, helping them navigate recovery, newborn care, and the transition from hospital to home with confidence and hope.

One of the simple but meaningful practices encouraged during these sessions is safe morning sunlight exposure for newborns, done in an open and secure environment. Short and indirect sunlight exposure can help prevent and manage neonatal jaundice, support vitamin D production, regulate a baby’s sleep-wake cycle, and promote overall well-being for both mother and child.

Beyond the health tips, these mornings are a space for mothers to find their footing. In the quiet glow of the morning light, anxieties turn into confidence. We are holding spaces for mothers to grow, ensuring that as their babies thrive, they do too.

We are pleased to share that Ruben Primary and Junior School has received 400 new three-seater desks, providing much-needed relief for 1,200 of our students. This infrastructure project was funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG_CDF) via the Embakasi South MP's office. With a rapidly growing student body of 3,800, this support arrives at a vital moment.

As a primary partner to the school, Ruben Centre works to provide essential services and resources where public funding often falls short. Seeing the government fulfill its role in infrastructure is a commendable step toward a sustainable future for our community. The school’s principal, Mr. Peter Kanyago, welcomed the delivery and noted that continued investment in school facilities is essential. We look forward to further professional collaboration with government offices to ensure our learners have the environment they deserve.
