I used to say social media was not my thing until I spent two years away from home 😅.
During those two years in Kenya, I stayed connected with my family and friends mainly through social media. I kept up with them mostly on WhatsApp and Facebook. Social media became my second world.
During that period, social media was not just for communication. It became a place where I followed what people were doing, learned new things, and engaged with different ideas. It affected me both positively and negatively. In fact, I can confidently say that social media has contributed to how I think today and even influenced my way of living.
When I take time to reflect on it, I realize it is not just me. Social media is shaping the lives of many people, especially young people. There are so many voices in these spaces—some good and some harmful.
Unfortunately, the voices that often dominate are the misleading ones. They appear attractive and convincing, but many people fail to recognize the danger because of how appealing they seem.
What concerns me most is that social media is here to stay. It is becoming a world that will either positively or negatively influence the minds of generations to come.
As Christians, we cannot afford to remain silent or live recklessly in these spaces. We need more godly voices to help guide those who are being deceived and be the evidence of God's goodness. We need to live out our faith on social media just as we are supposed to do in the physical world.
Social media is a real world that is shaping the minds of many. What part will you play?
