Sin Separates Us From God
“Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.”
— Isaiah 59:1–2 (NKJV)
There are many reasons why we do not get answers to prayers, and sometimes it is not due to sin in our lives. But sometimes it is.
Many people preach a Gospel which says that God has forgiven our past, present, and future sins already, and many born again believers take this to mean there is no need to strive against sin since no one is perfect.
Yet the Bible says:
“You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin.”
— Hebrews 12:4 (NKJV)
The grace of God was never meant to make us comfortable in sin. Grace gives us power to overcome sin.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”
— Titus 2:11–12 (NKJV)
Listen, the very same way we claim every scripture that is favorable to us, we must also pay attention to the scriptures that warn and correct us, because they determine the outcome of many things in our lives, including answered prayers.
You cannot be living in willful sin while expecting intimacy with God and wondering why your prayers feel hindered.
“Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.”
— John 9:31 (NKJV)
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.”
— Psalm 66:18 (NKJV)
“The Lord is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous.”
— Proverbs 15:29 (NKJV)
Yes, God is merciful. Yes, Jesus paid the price for our sins once and for all. Yes, salvation is through faith in Christ alone. But the view of sin in God’s eyes has never changed.
Sin still grieves the Holy Spirit.
Sin still destroys fellowship.
Sin still hardens hearts.
Sin still corrupts lives.
That is why scripture tells believers:
“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience…”
— Colossians 3:5–6 (NKJV)
We are not called to casually live in the very things Jesus died to free us from.
“Awake to righteousness, and do not sin…”
— 1 Corinthians 15:34 (NKJV)
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.”
— 1 John 3:7 (NKJV)
It is through sin that corruption, violence, injustice, hatred, sickness, and degradation entered the world. Even though we have received Jesus, sin still exists in the world, and believers must continually walk in the new life Christ has given us.
Sin left you positionally when Christ saved you, but now you must daily walk in that transformed life through obedience to the Holy Spirit.
“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…”
— Romans 8:29 (NKJV)
God is not calling us to perfection in the flesh, but to repentance, surrender, holiness, and transformation.
And when we do fall, we do not run from God — we repent and return to Him.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
— 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
“He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”
— Proverbs 28:13 (NKJV)
So yes, sometimes prayers are hindered because of sin in our lives. Repentance restores fellowship with God, softens the heart, and opens the way for communion with Him again.
God’s hand is still able to save.
His ear is still able to hear.
But He is calling His people to holiness, obedience, and true repentance.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
— James 4:8 (NKJV)
Prayer
Father, search our hearts and reveal anything in us that displeases You. Create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us. Help us not to use grace as an excuse for sin, but to walk in holiness, repentance, and obedience. Transform us daily into the image of Jesus Christ. Let our lives honor You, and let nothing separate us from intimate fellowship with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
