Encouraging Pastors and Church Leaders to Accept
Their Biblical Mandate
Because I believe the modern pastor is the key to transforming existing
churches into discipling centers, I intend to provide more ammunition for
leaders to use in leading others to Great Commission obedience.
When pastors attempt to transform a generic church into a discipling
church, they face a major task. They can take three major tracks to guide the
church through the transition:
Preaching. The pastor can make a bigger difference faster than any other
person. The “bully pulpit,” as some call it, is the means of calling
people to action and presenting them with God’s agenda via the Word
of God. I encourage pastors to use the material in here as the starting
point for developing sermons that will encourage congregations to
obey the Great Commission.
Small groups. The best way to reach the most people in the most
meaningful way is through the small group. It provides all the essential
elements for spiritual growth. Done correctly, small group involvement
makes disciples, identifies leaders, and gives people the relationships
and accountability they need.
Leadership development. Through the small group, leaders are identified
and can be placed into the leadership community as apprentices.
For the long haul, supporting networks of both clergy and laity will be
