JOEL THROUGH THE LENS OF GRACE
Theme: Restoration Flows from the Finished Work of Christ
FOUNDATIONAL GRACE TRUTH
Everything God does for us is because of Jesus, not because of our efforts.
Repentance in Joel is not self-punishment; it is a change of mind that turns us back to God’s goodness.
Romans 5:1
We are justified by faith and have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. THE LOCUSTS – WHAT GRACE REVEALS (JOEL 1)
Joel describes destruction by locusts.
In a grace perspective, this is not God punishing His people, but a picture of life under the curse when people live without revelation of God’s heart.
John 10:10
The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy.
Jesus came that we may have life and life more abundantly.
Key grace truth:
God is not the destroyer
The enemy steals when grace is not known
Lack of knowledge opens doors, not lack of effort
Hosea 4:6
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
2. “RETURN TO ME” – REPENTANCE UNDER GRACE (JOEL 2:12–13)
Return does not mean “try harder.”
It means come back to God’s goodness.
Joel 2:13
Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
This perfectly reveals the heart of God fulfilled in Christ.
Romans 2:4
It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.
Grace repentance:
Turns from self-effort to Jesus
Turns from fear to sonship
Turns from shame to righteousness
3. GOD DEFENDS HIS PEOPLE – CHRIST AS OUR WARRIOR (JOEL 2:18–20)
When people see God rightly, God rises on their behalf.
Joel 2:18
Then the Lord became jealous for His land and had pity on His people.
Under the New Covenant:
Jesus already fought the battle
The enemy is already defeated
Colossians 2:15
Jesus disarmed principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them at the cross.
Spiritual warfare under grace:
We fight from victory, not for victory
We enforce what Jesus already won
