Sabbath School Summary
The Most Convincing Proof
Lesson 9
Memory Text: John 11:51, 52
SATURDAY: "The church is God's appointed agency for the salvation of men." Built for the purpose of serving the world and proclaiming the gospel message, it has been God's plan that the members of the church will reflect His character to the world. To do this, her members need to be united. Yet, they need to unite with Christ first. Unity with Christ is a surety for unity with others (5BC, p. 1148).
SUNDAY: Unity is a gift that sprung out from the cross—"that instrument of shame and torture". Under the cross of Jesus, we're reconciled to God. As we spread the three angels' message to the world, we extend this unity to others. In the words of Caiaphas; Christ's death gathers us "together into one" (John 11:51, 52, Eph. 1:7-10). We're also sons of God through baptism (Gal. 3:26, 27, Rom. 6:3, 4).
MONDAY: Our world today is in turmoil. Yet, God is in the act of reversing this cosmic conflict into cosmic unity. "God's eternal plan" will blot out every speck of "disharmony" and bring "peace" (Eph. 2:13-16). Christ's death united Jews and Gentiles, it is able to break every wall of partition today. As "new creation" (2 Cor. 5:17-21) we can start by reaching out to the world (John 13:35, Eph. 3:8-11).
TUESDAY: Set before us is patience, purity, and gentleness in the life of Christ which we ought to imitate. This was apostle Paul's solemn appeal to the Philippians (Phil. 2:5). We are God's light in a gloomy world, hence, He bids us to use our lives to witness His grace to others (Eph. 4:25-5:2, Col. 3:1-17, Gal. 6:2, Matt. 7:12, 16:24-26; 1 Pet. 3:3, 4, 2:11, 12). Our lives should impact the world.
WEDNESDAY: Sensing Satan had scattered all seeds of kindness but planting seeds of evil in the church at Rome, Paul counseled the church to unite (Romans 14, 15). The disputes were over Jewish maxims on food and 'holy' days (Rom. 14:1-6, 17, 21, Acts 10:14, 13:14, 16:13, 17:2). This were not matters of salvation, hence, the apostle admonished the church to avoid any division and unite.
THURSDAY: As the disciples meditated upon the Holy life of Christ before the Pentecost, they were "with one accord" unlike the strive that existed before (Luke 22:24). Instead of recalling past mistakes (John 18:15-18, 25-27, 20:25, Mark 10:35-41, Matt. 9:9), all differences were put aside. They united to receive the gift of the Spirit to save souls and to reflect God (AA, p. 37, 48).
FRIDAY: In every age, God through His Spirit has sustained His church. Bible record depicts how the Holy Spirit guided the apostles in making decisions for the church. By revelation (e.g., the story of Cornelius and Ananias), by the usage of Scripture, and by consensus (the Spirit aides members to reach one decision) God has guided His church through centuries of persecution and conflict.
