Green Churches Elgeyo Marakwet proudly hosted our third annual conference, bringing together church leaders and Change Agents from Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu to reflect on our shared environmental mission. 🌳

Throughout 2024, we have focused on developing environmental policies among member churches, advancing tree-growing initiatives, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and further incorporating more ecumenical committees to foster collaboration across different congregations. 💪

With this momentum, church leaders and Change Agents are now set to lead Phase 2, expanding the Green Churches movement ecumenically and within the four core member churches in the county- African Inland Church, Reformed Church of East Africa, The Anglican Church and Catholic Church- making an even greater impact. 🙌

Looking ahead, we’re excited to keep growing this movement, building a lasting impact on our communities and the environment at large. And better yet, there’s more to come! With new communities set to join in soon, we can’t wait to share where the Green Churches mission is heading next. Stay tuned! 🌍

"The climate crisis is not 'gender neutral'." -

As the world continues to face the escalating impacts of climate change, women often find themselves on the frontlines of survival and adaptation.

Why?
Women- especially those from rural areas- are predominantly responsible for managing household resources such as water, food, and firewood, which become increasingly scarce due to climate change. The scarcity of these resources forces them to walk further, work harder, and adapt faster to ensure their families' survival.💪

Yet, despite these hardships, women remain at the forefront of the fight, often leading local efforts to adapt and mitigate climate impacts. This is why empowering these women and supporting their efforts is crucial for overcoming immediate challenges and building more resilient and sustainable communities.🙌

In Elgeyo Marakwet County, Mwangaza Light’s "Green Churches" initiative addresses these challenges by providing capacity building and training tailored to women’s needs. One way is through the establishment of tree nurseries which not only empowers these women to support themselves economically but also helps in conserving the environment.🌍

In efforts to address critical issues surrounding cooking and being a woman in today’s Kenya, Green Churches has launched ongoing interactive training sessions on clean cooking with local community women in Elgeyo Marakwet County. These sessions provide a platform for women to meet, share their experiences, discuss the challenges they face, and celebrate their successes in relation to cooking, which is a core part of womanhood. 👩

The pilot session held in June was a success, providing valuable feedback on the conversations and the reliability of the guidance cards we offered. Our objective is to understand their concerns and also educate them. Recognizing that mindset shifts and behavioural changes are gradual, we aim to create spaces where these conversations can be had, having been presented in relatable and accessible ways. 🌱💡

We believe that in order to foster meaningful and lasting change, it is essential to engage with the community continuously, addressing their needs and empowering them through education and support. Swipe through to see a snapshot of some of the guidance cards we use in these sessions. ➡️

Clement Wambugu, a 27-year-old from Mai Mahiu, Kenya, once lived a life filled with hope and purpose. As the sole provider for himself and his mother, he ran a successful business with nearly 80 chickens and turkeys, which provided their daily bread. His life, though simple, was filled with ambition and he was on a path to achieving his modest goals, just like many of us strive for.

But sadly, the devastating flash floods that occured in Mai Mahiu changed everything. Clement now has no home, no food, and no clothes. The floods wiped out his business and his dreams, leaving him to rely on the kindness of strangers for survival.

Clement's story is just one of many affected by these floods, now left homeless and seeking refuge in nearby schools and churches.

In a joint initiative, Mwangaza Light, Green Churches, ADS Kenya and Solstar have come together to fundraise for flood survivors to provide them with much needed essentials that they need, including clean energy solutions like cookstoves and solar lights as they try to rebuild their lives from scratch.

How you can help💚

-Give a donation towards Clement, and more like him through www.mwangazalight.com
-Share Clement's story to raise awareness of the situation.

Updates from Elgeyo Marakwet!☘

This week, we had an amazing start to developing the Reformed Church of East Africa’s (RCEA) environmental policy which saw church leaders from various departments gathered to define the mission, vision, and values for this initiative.

It's impressive to see both top leaders and lay leaders so enthusiastic and prepared to shift mindsets, adopt sustainable practices, and green church land.

The development and adoption of these policies are both significant, marking such a major milestone for Green Churches in our quest to promote environmental stewardship within the church.💚

Today, we all stand together as Kenyans through tree planting, recognizing it as the most powerful tool against climate change, the root cause of the ongoing devastating floods.
In solemn remembrance, we honor all those lost, as we sow seeds of resilience for a safer tomorrow. 🌱🕊️

Happy Sunday! ☘️️
Today's verse emphasizes the importance of letting the land rest without abusing it, just as God commanded the Israelites.
Present day, this principle resonates in our responsibility to refrain from practices like over-tilling that could harm the land's quality.
