The Time of God’s Visitation

Because you did not [come progressively to] recognize [from observation and personal experience] the time of your visitation [when God was gracious toward you and offered you salvation].
Luke 19:44, AMP

In John 9 we read the account of a blind man whom Jesus healed. This man was blind from birth, a beggar who had never had the privilege of seeing his parents, his siblings, or the world he lived in. We read in John 9:6-7 that Jesus ‘spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing’.

This miracle happened on the Sabbath, and it created quite a stir amongst the religious leaders. Instead of focussing on the amazing miracle that had occurred in the life of this man, who had been blind from birth, their focus was the fact that Jesus had transgressed the law by performing this miracle on the Sabbath day.

Shortly after this event we read how Jesus raised Lazarus, who had been dead for four days, from the grave – another supernatural miracle! However, we read in John 12:37 this sad reference concerning the continued unbelief of many of the people and leaders of Jesus’ time: ‘Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in Him’.

I am reminded of the English proverb that says, “There are none so blind as those who will not see.” We can be so sure of our own opinion, and so set on what we believe to be true, that no evidence to the opposite will sway us.

There is a serious caution for us in the above. If our hearts become so hardened by our own belief systems and prejudices, we may actually miss the great thing God is busy doing right in front of our eyes – the God-moments when He shows up in unexpected ways!

Although it is wise and very necessary to discern the supernatural things we may see and experience, and to test the spirits (1 John 4:1), we should remain teachable. We should know the voice of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of truth, whom Jesus promised would teach us all things (John 14:16 & 26) and be grounded in the Word of God.

In spite of the many wonderful things Jesus did when He walked the earth, and in spite of the fact that He taught about the fulfilment of Scripture by His coming, people did not recognise the time of God’s visitation to them (Luke 19:44). We need to ask the Holy Spirit to keep our hearts tender towards His voice and the things He is busy doing in the times we live in. When our focus is religion outside of relationship with the Lord, we will undoubtedly miss the ‘God thing’ happening around us.

I reckon that, if I sit at the feet of the Lord daily, cultivate a sensitivity to His still, small voice and be actively on the lookout for His hand in my everyday life, and lives of those I encounter, I will not miss the miraculous and divine things – both great and small – that He is busy doing.

ENCOURAGING WORD

The Trap of the To-Do List.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:40-42 (KJV)

Have you ever finished a long, exhausting day feeling like you checked off a hundred tasks, yet your soul still feels completely empty? We live in a culture that worships "the hustle," where being busy is seen as a badge of honor and resting is often viewed as a weakness.

Martha was actually doing something "good"—she was hosting the Savior of the world! She was cooking, cleaning, and making sure every detail was perfect. But in her drive to serve Jesus, she actually lost sight of Him. She became frustrated, bitter, and "cumbered" (which means distracted and dragged down) by her to-do list. Meanwhile, her sister Mary was just sitting at His feet. To the world, Mary looked unproductive. To Jesus, she was the only one doing the "one thing" that actually mattered.

Beloved, your worth is not found in how much you can produce, but in how much you can receive from Him. Do not allow the pressure of your responsibilities or the "noise" of your chores to convince you that sitting still is a waste of time.

Spiritual maturity is found in the believer who knows when to put down the "serving spoon" and simply listen to the Master’s voice.

Strengthening your walk involves a daily decision to prioritize the presence of God over the performance for God. As you choose that "good part," you will find a peace that remains long after the work is over.

Let your heart be quiet in the middle of a loud world. Yield your "need to be busy" to the beauty of being still today.

Prayer:
Abba Father, I thank You that You desire my heart more than my hard work. Help me to choose the "one thing needful" today and find my rest at Your feet.
In Jesus name, Amen.

ENCOURAGING WORD

The Growth in Letting Go.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
John 15:2 (KJV)

If you have ever watched someone tend to a garden, you might have seen them take a pair of shears and cut off parts of a plant that look perfectly healthy. To an outsider, it looks like they are hurting the plant, but the gardener knows that if those extra branches stay, they will soak up all the nutrients and the plant will never grow any actual fruit.

In the same way, God teaches His children through seasons of pruning by removing distractions, unhealthy attachments, or comforts that keep them spiritually stagnant. During these seasons, believers must learn to stay rooted in prayer, continue reading the Word, and obey God even when they do not understand His process.

When you practice trusting God daily instead of clinging tightly to people, plans, or possessions, your heart becomes prepared to bear the spiritual fruit He desires to grow in your life.

Beloved, the loss you are feeling right now is often just a divine subtraction to make room for a better addition. Do not allow the sting of a door closing or a season ending to convince you that God is angry with you.

Spiritual maturity grows when believers intentionally surrender their desires to God, renew their minds through Scripture, and seek His wisdom instead of resisting change.

One way to strengthen your walk during pruning seasons is by spending consistent quiet time with the Lord and asking Him to reveal what attachments are hindering your growth. As you release the “good” things that no longer serve His purpose, you create room for the “great” things He is preparing for your future.

Let your heart remain teachable and yielded to the wisdom of the Master today.

Prayer:
Abba Father, I thank You that You care enough about my future to prepare me for it. I know there were times where I complained about the challenging seasons in my life instead of trusting Your plan. Please teach me to surrender every unhealthy attachment, remain faithful in prayer and Your Word, and trust Your pruning process completely.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Too Close for Comfort?

As a lily among brambles, so is my love among the young women.
Song of Solomon 2:1, ESV

Chapter 2 of The Song brings us to a time of close intimacy between the loving couple. Or is it? Imagine yourself looking at a bramble patch and suddenly noticing a beautiful flower right in the middle. There’s nothing beautiful about brambles – their ugly untidiness seems to enhance the loveliness of the flower. You want to get a closer look, give it a smell, even pick it to put into a vase at home. But you can’t get near it because of the brambles.

Here, in The Song, the lover (the Shepherd) is saying, “You are incredibly beautiful and I love you to bits, but I can’t get near you. Compared to other women, you are wonderful. But you surround yourself with them because that’s where you feel safe”.

Here’s a question: How willing am I to put down the barriers and let Jesus get really close to me? I can go to a church service and enjoy the worship, the prayers, and the preaching, and still keep Him at arm’s length. I can go to a home group meeting and enjoy the company and fellowship of other believers, but still not let Jesus get really close. I can sit comfortably at home, read my Bible and pray; but have I truly met with Him? I can be busy in ‘Christian ministry`, but is this a substitute for intimacy with Him?

Mark says that he called the Apostles “that they might be with Him and that He might send them out.” Being with Him preceded being sent out. In John 15:4 Jesus says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me” Fruitfulness depends on intimacy.

It can be a bit scary. If He got really close – close enough to see ‘the real me’, I wonder what He’d find. Thoughts, attitudes, reactions, habits that I’m a bit ashamed of? Wounds and pain that I don’t want brought to the surface? Somehow, it’s more comfortable to keep my distance.

Does that stop Him loving me? Of course not! He loves us with ‘an everlasting love’ (Jeremiah 31:3); ‘from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him’ (Psalm 103:17); ‘this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us’ (1 John 4:10).

Today, as I write this, I’m committing myself to get as close as I can to Jesus – to get out of my bramble patch and connect with Him. Only then will I truly know His love and the fruitfulness that flows from it.

My Strengthening God

Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterwards you will take me into glory … My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.
Psalm 73:23-26, NIV

What a declaration this is! In many of the psalms, David is crying out in distress: “God, Save me! I’m in trouble! People are attacking me! My enemies are pursuing me!” In others, David is desperate. He knows he has done deep wrong and he doesn’t know how to put it right. He spills it all out to God, asking God to cleanse him and forgive his wrongdoing. He goes through deep shame, terrible shame for his adultery with Bathsheba. We can follow the process through, as he knows that God has truly and deeply forgiven him and released him from the darkness of that appalling series of events.

Some of these early psalms are full of joy. Others end in joy, after David has worked his way through the horrors of what he is enduring- like being hunted and pursued by King Saul and his troops in the desert, high and low, running for his life.

This man is real. Now, still only part-way through my readings, I’m thinking that David doesn’t cover up his highs and his lows. This is real, desperate and, above all, emotional stuff. And, what’s more, we realise that God also is real. God is emotional. God is real and God is there.

It’s against this background that I have found myself so impacted by these verses above: ‘Through it all, God, through all I’ve done, You are right here with me; You have a safe gentle grip on my hand of action. I know I am safe. And You actually offer me your holy wisdom. You lead my hand and you personally guide me into a good way to go. God, You are all I have and need. You will hang on to me through thick and thin. You will be with me safely, right to the end, and bring me to Your glory. My nerve might fail, my body might fail, but You strengthen something deep within me and I know that, with You, I have everything I could ever want, for ever. You are sufficient.’ (my paraphrase

ENCOURAGING WORD

The Protection of the Closed Door.

My South Africa mission had confirmed itineraries, that after the Thohoyandou-Limpopo conference, my wife and I would proceed to Witbank and North West Province. All the planned meetings had been confirmed while I was still in Kenya and after arrival in S.A.b
But the very last minute, the hosts cancelled the itinerary leaving me almost stranded and confused in a foreign country. As I prayed, the Holy Spirit gave this scripture and my heart settled. The rest is a testimony for another day.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. Acts 16:7 (KJV)

How do you react when a plan you’ve prayed over and worked hard for suddenly hits a dead end? It’s easy to feel rejected or even abandoned by God when a door we were sure He opened slams shut in our face. Paul and his team were on a mission to spread the Gospel—a "good" thing—yet the Holy Spirit physically blocked their path. They were "stuck" at a border, unable to move forward into the territory they had mapped out.

We often view a "no" from Heaven as a sign of failure or a lack of favor, but in reality, a closed door is often one of God’s most merciful acts of protection. He sees the storms, the traps, and the unnecessary burdens waiting behind that door that we cannot see. He wasn't stopping Paul’s ministry; He was redirecting him toward a Macedonian call that would change the world.

Beloved, a delay in your timeline is not a denial of your destiny. Do not allow the frustration of a cancelled plan or a rejected application to convince you that you’ve lost your way.

Spiritual maturity is found in the believer who can thank God for the doors He closes just as much as the ones He opens.

Strengthening your walk involves a daily submission to the "Sovereign No," trusting that if God blocks one path, it’s because He has a better destination in mind. As you release your grip on your own itinerary, you will find that His redirections always lead to a greater impact and a deeper peace.

Let your heart be quiet in the face of a "not yet." Yield your "need to go your own way" to the perfect navigation of the Spirit today.

Prayer:
Abba Father, I thank You for Your protection, even when it comes in the form of a closed door. Your plans are always good and perfect even if I may not understand them yet. I trust Your navigation today, believing that Your "No" is always for my good and Your glory.
In Jesus name, Amen.

It Is Finished

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light … and find out what pleases the Lord.

Ephesians 5:8-9, NIV

‘For the Lord God is a sun and shield. He gives grace and glory, no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly’ (Psalm 84:11). How is your walk with God? Is it honourable and worthy of the One who brought us out of darkness and into His glorious light?

I believe He has already affirmed His purposes for us in scriptures like the following ones.
“I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11), and
“O Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in You!” (Psalm 84:12).

The word of God is filled with promises, mostly with a condition attached to them.

Maybe we do not think too much about our future with God, and where we are heading spiritually. Perhaps, if we are honest, our thoughts and motivations are more generated by personal ambition, or hope, as we see it. Perhaps we are so busy striving for success, or reward, or freedom from the pitfalls of everyday life, that God’s purposes for us are swallowed up by our human endeavour.

Here is the conclusion of the preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. “Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 2:11).

The Bible speaks of how God has His plans and He sets them before us. “He guides me on the paths of righteousness, for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:3). This would indicate that His reputation depends on His guidance to us. There are many promises and blessings laid out for us in His word, and all because He loves us. His ways are not our ways.

Here is a question to ponder.

“Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:3).

Our problem is that we cannot undo all that we’ve done which is not pleasing to God. We cannot break through our barrier of past sin. No. But God can, and has done, by the sacrifice of His beloved Son and by the power of the cross.

But we are encouraged when we read, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” in Psalm 34:8.

He has made a way. All that needed to be done has been done, and it doesn’t have to be done again. We don’t have to build our own fortress or try to justify ourselves before the King.

Here are some encouraging scriptures:

“He is our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30.)

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1).

We need no more looking back, and no looking inward to see if we qualify. We need have no more doubts. God knows where we’ve been and remembers the price He paid. As we live for Him, His blessings begin to unfold.

ENCOURAGING WORD

The Rhythm of Grace and Reward.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)

There is a subtle trap we often fall into where we start to believe that God’s blessings are a paycheck for our good behavior. We think that when things are going incredibly well, it must be because we finally "got it right" or earned a seat at the table through our own effort. However, a deeper look at our history with Him reveals a much more humbling truth: the foundation of every single blessing is entirely His grace. He does not give because we are qualified; He gives because He is good. His abundant mercy and unconditional love are the source of everything we have. It is never about our performance; it is always about His character.

Beloved, while His love is a free gift that can never be earned, there is a beautiful rhythm to the Father’s heart. He is a Rewarder. When you seek Him, you find Him. When you obey, you aren't "buying" a miracle; you are simply stepping into the path where His promises already live. Think of it this way: His grace provides the gift, but your pursuit positions you to receive it.

Obedience isn’t a transaction to get more from Him—it is the way you stay close to the Source. You don’t obey to be loved; you obey because you are already loved so deeply. Even the strength you have to seek Him today is a gift from His hand. Yield your "need to earn it" to the overwhelming grace of the One who delights in your "Yes."

Prayer:
Abba Father, I thank You that Your blessings are rooted in Your goodness and not my perfection. Help me to seek You with a pure heart, trusting that You are a Rewarder of those who diligently turn toward You.
In Jesus name, Amen.

A Shelter in the Storm

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distresses. He hushed the storm to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea were still. Then they were glad because of the calm, and He guided them to their desired harbour.
Psalm 107:26-29, AMP

I hardly dream but last night I dreamt. Here's the dream.

I was travelling to visit some dear friends about an hour’s drive away. I was passing through a town which has a beautiful little harbour, and I decided to take a slight detour to drink in the view and have a quiet time. It was quite a blustery day, and when I neared the water’s edge, I could see that the sea was stirred up and very choppy. My attention was quickly drawn to the harbour to my right, and I was amazed to see the contrast. It was safely protecting many little fishing boats behind a thick, solid stone wall.

The metre and a half thick wall was sheltering these small vessels, providing them with such a place of tranquillity and calm. What I found incredible was these two quite different scenes, side by side, with just a wall between them.

When I got up contemplating, I was reminded of Psalm 107:28-30, ‘Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distresses. He hushed the storm to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea were still. Then they were glad because of the calm, and He guided them to their desired harbour’.

Let me speak to someone today

No matter what storm is raging, we can trust the Lord to bring us through it and help us reach the safety of harbour. If a storm is what you are feeling today, remember that He has heard your cry and will bring you through.

Psalm 18:2 says, ‘The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; … and my high tower …’. There may be storms to deal with in life, but the Lord is like the strong, stone sea wall. He can shelter us and lead us into a harbour of peace. The storm may be unfurling its fury around about us, but we can truly find a place of refuge and peace when we look to Jesus in the storms and battles of life. He is our harbour, our strong tower and our refuge from the storm. He will either calm us and the storm, or He will lead us, to a sheltered calm haven until the storm subsides.

He promises to provide us with a place of peace in Him; ‘You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You’ (Isaiah 26:3).

Hallelujah!!!
