Kenya Movement OF Catholic Professionals (KMCP)
28TH August 2019
Catholic professionals in Kenya under the umbrella of Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals (KMCP) Pax Romana paid a courtesy call to H.E. Archbishop Bert Van Megan, the new Apostolic Nuncio in Kenya and South Sudan, at his residence in Nairobi on 28th August 2019. The group of Catholic professionals in Kenya was represented by the KMCP national Executive Committee, Kenya Catholic Doctors’ Association, Catholic Members of Parliament Spiritual Support Initiative and International Young Catholic Students.
The chairman of Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals Mr. Samuel Mukundi briefed the Apostolic Nuncio on the five pillars prioritized for action by the movement. This include holding a National Prayer day for Catholic Professionals at Subukia National Shrine on every second Saturday of August starting 2020; formation of the Laity through a programme of deepening understanding of the Catholic Social Teachings; engagement on national discourses on matters such as education and constitutional reforms, civic education, social audit of devolved governance as well as offer ourselves for leadership in public offices; environmental protection and promotion in response to Laudato Si including environmental education and intervention among professionals and grass root communities and enhance the participation of the Catholic professionals as pastoral agents through direct action including scientific and social enquiry, pastoral programme instruction for Catholic pupils and students in schools, participation in the laity council at the episcopal, diocesan and parish levels.
‘As CAMPSSI we provide spiritual support for Catholic MPs. We provide a link between the Church and parliament on matters that require legislation” Hon. Innocent Momanyi Member of Parliament for Bobasi shared at the meeting.
“The Church needs to train and appoint more passionate priests to chaplains to accompany the youth in their formation in the Church. The Church should listen more and respond to the needs of the youth while involving them in making decisions on matters that affect them” Maria the outgoing coordinator of International Young Catholic Students observed.
In his remarks, Dr. Wahome Ngare of Catholic Doctors’ Association observed that synergy among all Catholic professionals is imperative. Emerging issues like the human papillomavirus vaccine being administered on girls as young as 10 years is something that should elicit concerted effort among all Catholics.
In his address to the delegation of Catholic Professionals the Apostolic Nuncio who has been in Kenya since May 2019 observed that he is impressed with the Church and the faith of the people of Kenya. Referring to the parable of the yeast the nuncio equated professionals to yeast who despite being few are able to permeate every part of the society. He called on the professionals to take every small matter they are engaged in seriously observing that everything we do is an invitation to serve Christ. The nuncio who is also a Career diplomat having served in various capacities for 25 year and expert in in canon and international law noted that the issues shared by the group are pertinent and of utmost urgency. If they professionals work swiftly and methodically they can turn back the tide and held save the values that we hold dear as Catholics. The nuncio promised to work closely with the professionals and render any support within the purview of his office for the common good.
Also present at the high level consultation meeting were Alice Muchri the administrator of CAMPSSI, Dr. Fred Wamalwa the President of Pax Romana Africa, Ms. Delinah Kingasia Vice Chair KCMP and Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Mulu the National Chaplain of Kenya Movement of Catholic Professionals.

My heart is broken. Today, we lost one of the most beautiful churches in the world. For 800 years in stood as a transcendent reminder of God's presence among men. Built to house priceless works of art, holy relics, and above all the sacraments, it was made by a world that no longer exists, the world of Christendom in which the holy mysteries of faith permeated everything.

As I watched the images of one of the great landmarks of Christian Europe burning to the ground, I could not help but see a tragic metaphor for the Western church today. We are heirs to so much beauty, so much truth, so much faith. And what have we done? We have squandered it, rejected it, and collectively shaken our fist in God's face, through bloody revolution and even more subtly through apathy. Rather than setting our eyes on heaven, like the great gothic arches and rose windows invited us to do, we attempted to drag God down to us, to make him in our own image. We wanted him to accomodate our whims, our appetites, our sins. Plagued by horrific abuses, worldliness, and compromises, the church in the West, despite our veneer of respectability, is very much on fire. We have left our first love (Rev. 2:4), and we are reaping the tragic consequences.

If we learn anything from this great tragedy (and we must), it is that we must return to God. We must repent of our lukewarmness, and, just as the cathedral was the center of every medieval village, we must again make Christ the King the center of our lives. Let us weep for the loss of this magnificent church, but let even more weep for our sins, and turning to the Lord in the beauty of repentance, build a cathedral for him in our hearts.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Contemplative spirituality needs everything the Church has to offer. It needs to be holistic in the most of senses.

It's still early in the new year, and resolutions and fresh starts are still inspiring us. Lent approaches. Many readers of The Catholic Gentlemen are participating in the ascetic rigors of Exodus 90. This is in many ways the most proper time of year for the unchaste, especially those with long-term
