PRAYING FOR INDIAN CHURCH
A 75-YEAR-OLD PASTOR IS BEHIND BARS FOR A COMMENT HIS FAMILY SAYS HE NEVER WROTE

Arun Pannalal has spent decades as president of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum in India, publicly advocating for a Christian minority that has faced growing pressure under the state's strict anti-conversion laws. On August 7, police showed up at his home in Raipur and arrested him at 75 years old, over a Facebook comment a BJP leader claimed was offensive to a Hindu deity. He was booked on charges including promoting enmity between groups and intentionally insulting religious sentiment, then sent to judicial custody for two weeks.

His son Vaibhav didn't stay quiet. He told reporters his father never posted the comment at all, and that someone likely impersonated him online using his name and photo to manufacture the controversy. He called the arrest a deliberate attempt to intimidate and silence his father for years of speaking up on behalf of persecuted Christians in the state. A local bishop echoed the concern, saying Christian leaders have become easy targets since the anti-conversion law took effect.

This case is still unfolding, and the allegations against Pannalal haven't been proven in court. But whether the comment was real or fabricated, the speed with which a lifelong Christian advocate ended up behind bars over a social media post raises hard questions about how minority voices are treated when they speak up.

Do you think Pannalal's arrest was about protecting religious sentiment, or about silencing a Christian leader?
