The Character of God In Salvation || Part F

*TUESDAY MAY 19, 2026*

*PRAYER OF FAITH (3)*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*

James is talking about the character of God.
He does not unbraid.
He gives liberally.
That implies that the focus of the one asking in prayer should be on the character of God.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

He mentions that the prayer of a righteous man makes power available.

Notice in context of James 5, that he also spoke about the prayer of faith.

James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: Vs15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

The “prayer of Faith” was to explain, believers praying for one another. This further helps to see that when we ask, it is in God’s character to be consistent in giving, thus the faith in praying has to do with receiving which is dependent on the part of the one asking and not the one giving (God).

In prayer, faith is not required in asking but in receiving. That is, faith is not needed to get to God. We see that James 1:5 does not mention faith.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

If God is going to give, he is not looking for a condition for why he should give. He gives to all men liberally. Hence God gives because of his character. There are no qualifications. All it takes is the mouth – to make a request. James says he that asks should not waver. So, faith is the receiver not the ‘asker’ in prayer.

Confession
The Father does not give based on condition. He gives to all men freely. There are no qualifications to asking.

*PRAYER OF FAITH (2)*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*

Every time the believer prays to the father, he hears and gives.

Giving is consistent with the Father’s nature. James further lends credence to the nature of the father in Verse 17.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Hence, receiving after praying is dependent solely on the one asking, and not God. God gives every time we ask.

However James in admonishing the one asking says “let him ask in Faith…”

The focus is on the believer receiving, and not God giving.

Hence James’s emphasis is on the believer wavering in his mind about the character of God in giving. And, this mindset can hinder the believer from receiving what has been given to him/her by God in response to his prayer.

James mentioned in Chapter 5 that prayer makes power available (James 5:16) hence in the place of prayer, power is made available to meet the need and change the circumstance.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

He mentions that the prayer of a righteous man makes power available.

Who is a righteous man?

Recall James admonition from Chapter 1.

…if any of you lack wisdom… (Verse 5)
…to the twelve tribes… (verse 1)

He was addressing Jewish Christians primarily and by implication the church.

Hence the believer is the righteous man. The believer has been made righteous by his identification with Christ.

2nd Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

The believer has been made the righteousness of God in him (Christ). Hence the righteous man can pray without fear of fault or doubting.

CONFESSION:
I have received therefore am bold and free before my heavenly Father always!

*PRAYER OF FAITH*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*
*Vs 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.*
*Vs 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.*
*Vs 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.*

James’s words in the aforementioned texts show that prayer goes beyond making requests unto God. It also involves receiving from God. In other words, receiving is part of prayer.

James was very clear on why the brother who asked will not receive…

…let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

He explains ‘’wavering” as being double minded in verse 8. The word “wavering” implies to judge; to separate thoroughly between two things or opinions; to dispute.

This means it can either be in the positive or negative. It is often used for deciding between two things. It was used in James 2:4.

James 2:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

In essence, James explains the term “wavering” as an act of unbelief.

Why will the brother waver?

The focus of the context of James 1:5-7 is the character of God.

Hence the wavering is about the character of God.

Notice how the character of God is described.
• He gives to all men liberally, without finding faults. Thus, James explained God as a giving God, who does not find fault or blame before He gives.
• He does not tempt with evil; - circumstances that drive the believer to pray was not God tempting the man with evil
• He is without variableness or shadow of turning (James 1:17)
• He does not change
• He is our Father

*Confession*
*God is my Father. I am a son, I have access to the Father. My focus is on the character of the Father when I pray. When I ask in prayer, I receive*

*PRAYING FOR THE LOCAL CHURCH*

*2nd Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing.*

*Prayer is an activity that is done daily and continuously. There is never a time a believer stops praying.*

From the different categories of things and people we pray for, implies that the believers’ life should be a life of prayer.

In praying for ourselves, we should pray more for our spiritual well being, for insight in God’s word more than physical things as this was the emphasis in scriptures.

Ephesians 1: 16-23, Philippians 1: 9-11, Colossians 1: 9-11, Philemon 6.
We’re also to pray for ourselves to walk in God’s plans and purpose for our lives, to walk in wisdom (James 1: 5)

Above all, we should be found praying much more for others, and other believers. We should spend more time praying for our local church, the members and ministers of the church.

1st Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

If we receive edification from the local church, then we should pray for the church.

Majority of Paul’s prayer was for the church; the local church. We are edified when everyone is growing and participating in the local church.

We can pray in the spirit always, daily, without ceasing.
1st Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
Our lifestyle of praying should be done in the spirit; praying in tongues.

*PRAYER:* Pray for every member of your local church this week, pray out in the spirit.
