Speak What He Teaches

Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. - Exod 4:12

Many true servants of the Lord struggle with being slow of speech. When called upon to speak for Him, they fear they may do more harm than good due to their lack of eloquence. In such moments, it’s good to remember that the Lord made the very tongue we consider slow, and we must be careful not to blame our Creator. A slow tongue may not be as great an issue as a fast one, and fewer words may be a greater blessing than an overflow of them. We must remember that true power doesn’t rest in human rhetoric, with its fancy words and clever phrases. Lack of fluency is not the disadvantage it seems.

If God is with our mouth and our mind, we have something far better than eloquence: we have His wisdom and power. Pharaoh had more to fear from the stammering Moses than from the most eloquent speaker in Egypt, for Moses’ words carried divine authority—they spoke plagues and death. If the Lord is with us in our natural weakness, we are armed with supernatural power. Therefore, let us speak boldly for Jesus, as we ought to speak.

Love the Church

Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favor her, yea, the set time, is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favor the dust thereof. - Ps 102:13-14

Yes, our prayers for the church will be answered. The time has come. We love the prayer meetings, the Sunday school, and every gathering of God’s people. Our hearts are united with all believers, and we can say with sincerity:

There’s not a lamb in all Thy flock
I would disdain to feed.
There’s not a foe before whose face
I’d fear Thy cause to plead.

If this is how we feel, we will soon see times of refreshing from the Lord. Our gatherings will be full, the saints will be revived, and sinners will be saved. This will come only by God’s mercy, but it will come. We are called to expect it. The time has come; let’s get ready. Let’s love every stone of Zion, even if it has fallen. Let’s treasure every truth, every ordinance, and every believer, even if others think little of them. When we care for Zion, God is about to care for her. When we delight in the Lord’s work, He will delight in it too.

“For the Scripture says, Whoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.” - Rom 10:11

A child of God may often struggle with doubts about whether they have any faith at all. When they read about what faith has accomplished and what it can do, and then see how little it seems to have done for them, they might wonder if they’ve ever truly had the faith of God’s elect. This leads them to ask, “Do I even have a single grain of saving faith?” But the very fact that they are asking this question is evidence that they do have faith. It’s that very faith that causes them to see and feel their unbelief and makes them concerned about it. It’s the light of God shining into their soul that reveals their sins—their nature and their number, the guilt of them, and the burden they place on the conscience—and exposes the workings of an unbelieving heart. But beyond this, if they had no faith at all, they wouldn’t be able to hear God’s voice in the gospel, nor receive it as a message of mercy. So they do have faith, even if they don’t yet have the clear evidence of it or the deep comfort it brings. This faith will save their soul because “the gifts and calling of God are without repentance”—meaning God never regrets the gifts he gives or the calling he grants. If he has ever blessed you with faith, no matter how small that faith may seem to you, he will not take it away. Instead, he will nurture it, fanning the faintest flame until it grows. He won’t abandon the work of his hands, for “he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

So if, even once in your life, you’ve felt the gospel to be the power of God for salvation; if you’ve had one true glimpse of Christ by living faith; if, for even just a moment, under the influence of his Spirit, you’ve laid hold of him and felt that he was yours—then your soul is as secure as if you were continually basking in the river that makes glad the city of God, drinking deeply from the honey and milk of the gospel, and walking all day long in the light of his gracious presence. This isn’t to say that you should be content with a cold, weak, or dying faith, but simply to affirm that when it comes to salvation, it’s not the amount of faith but its reality that saves the soul.🙏

“As the deer pants after the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, O God.” - Ps 42:1

What a vivid picture David uses in these words. Imagine a wounded stag, with an arrow in its side or being chased by a pack of hunters and hounds, all eager to bring it down. Picture it running for a long time under a burning sun, across sandy terrain. Now, imagine that this poor, wounded animal spots a stream of water in the distance. How it must pant! Its heaving sides gasp for breath, and it longs for the refreshing water—not just to drink deeply and cool its panting sides and exhausted, parched body, but also in the hope of crossing the stream and escaping the hunters and dogs pursuing it. What a powerful image.

Even as strong as this image is, David uses it to express the longing of his soul for God. We may not fully grasp the depth of this comparison; we might not dare to match our own feelings to his, or use the same intense, passionate expressions. But we can at least see what God’s people of old experienced during times of trial and temptation. We can compare our own spiritual feelings to theirs—sometimes this will humble us as we see our shortcomings, other times it will encourage us if we find similar experiences within ourselves. These things were written for our learning, “upon whom the ends of the world have come.”

So, in various ways and for different purposes, we can, with God’s help, reflect on expressions like those of David. With reverence, we search our hearts to see if we can find anything within us that resembles the work of grace the Holy Spirit describes in David’s soul. Don’t be completely discouraged if you can’t find a perfect or close match. Can you find any resemblance at all? If so, take comfort, because the Lord doesn’t despise the day of small beginnings. It is his own work in the heart that he values, as David felt when he said, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands” (Psalm 138:8). That work, whether in full or in part, will always mirror the work of grace that the Holy Spirit has carried out in the hearts of God’s people throughout the ages.🙏

Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. - Ezek 16:60

Despite our sins, the Lord remains faithful in His love for us. He looks back and remembers those early days when He took us into covenant with Himself, and we gave ourselves to Him. Those were joyful days! The Lord doesn’t hold them against us or accuse us of being insincere. Instead, He looks to His covenant with us rather than to our failures. There was no falsehood in that sacred agreement—certainly not on His part. How gracious of the Lord to look back with love!

But He also looks forward. He is determined that the covenant will not fail. Even if we falter, He remains true. He declares, “I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.” He has no intention of backing out of His promises. Blessed be His name, He sees the seal of the covenant—the blood of Jesus—and He remembers our Surety, His own dear Son. Because of this, He remains faithful to His covenant. “He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

O Lord, place this precious truth in my heart, and help me meditate on it all day long!

And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? - Judg 6:14

What a look it was that the Lord gave to Gideon! He gazed at him and transformed his discouragement into bravery. If our gaze upon the Lord can save us, what might His gaze upon us accomplish? Lord, look on me today and strengthen me for the tasks and battles ahead.

What a word it was that God spoke to Gideon: “Go.” He wasn’t to hesitate. Gideon might have replied, “How can I go in my weakness?” But God had already spoken, saying, “Go in this your strength.” The Lord’s look had filled him with strength, and now he only needed to use it to deliver Israel from the Midianites. It’s possible that the Lord has more work for me to do than I ever imagined. If He has looked upon me, He has strengthened me. By faith, I must now use the power He has given me. He doesn’t tell me to waste time but to “go” because He has empowered me. What a question the Lord asks me, just as He did Gideon: “Have I not sent you?” Yes, Lord, You have sent me, and I will go in Your strength. With Your command, I will go, knowing that You will bring victory through me.Amen🙏

Be filled with the Spirit - Eph 5:18

Some of the effects of being filled with the Spirit include:

1. Holiness of heart and life – This does not mean the perfection of our human nature but the holiness of the divine nature living within us.
2. Fullness of joy – Our hearts remain radiant, regardless of circumstances, filling us with holy laughter even in the midst of trials.
3. Fullness of wisdom, light, and knowledge – This causes us to see things as God sees them.
4. A quickened and elevated mind – We gain the fulfillment of the promise, "We have the mind of Christ."
5. A quickening of the physical body – Our bodies were made for the Holy Spirit just as much as our minds and souls.
6. The ability to pray in the Spirit – If He lives in us, our prayers will align with God’s work in the world. There is a divine harmony between the Spirit and Providence.

“They go from strength to strength, until each appears before God in Zion.” - Ps 84:7

As the Lord is faithful, no spiritual pilgrim will ever fall and perish in the valley of Baca. Some may fear that through temptation, their strong desires or raging lusts will one day break out and ruin them. No, not if they are true pilgrims. "Every one of them in Zion appears before God." Others may think they will never receive a testimony, never clearly read their name in the Book of Life, never feel the Lord's presence in their heart or receive his blessing. But if Jesus is truly theirs, they will.

Are they spiritual pilgrims? Do they find this world a valley of tears? Are their hearts set toward Zion? Have they come out of the world? Do they sometimes find refreshment in the valley of Baca, turning it into a well? Has the rain of God's grace filled the pools for them? And have they ever felt their strength made perfect in weakness? Then every one of them will appear before God in Zion. What a blessed end! How sweet is the fulfillment of the pilgrim’s hopes, desires, and expectations! It is the crowning blessing of all God has to give. "Every one of them appears before God," washed in the blood of the Savior, clothed in the righteousness of the Redeemer, adorned with the graces of the Spirit, and made fit for the inheritance of the saints in light.

No more weeping! The valley of Baca is passed, and every tear is wiped away. No more thorns to hurt the weary feet, no wild beasts to attack, no lurking enemies to surprise them, no doubts, fears, or sorrows to trouble them. Safe in Zion, safe in the arms of the Redeemer, safe in the bosom of their Savior, every one of them appears before God in glory!Shalom🙏

THE MAN WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD

“The man who does the will of God lives forever.” - 1 John 2:17

God’s will is always best; it is always an expression of His divine love. A grieving wife stood beside her husband’s coffin and said to a friend, “There lies my husband, my only earthly support, my most faithful friend, who never once failed me. But I must not forget that there also lies the will of God, and that His will is perfect love.” By faith, she saw good and blessing in what appeared to be the end of her happiness. In truth, every dark providence that touches the life of a believer carries with it good and blessing. Our Father never means to harm us in anything He does or allows. His promise is, “I know the thoughts I think toward you . . . thoughts of peace.”Shalom 🙏

ARE YOU HELPING...

God hath set some in the church ... helps - 1 Cor 12:28

In the apostle's lists of church leaders, the "helps" are mentioned even before the "governments." Through the ministry of prayer, giving, encouragement, a warm smile, a comforting handshake, a small word of cheer, and in countless other ways, we can all follow in the footsteps of Aquila and Priscilla if we choose to. It is a great grace to rejoice in the work of others and to pour our lives, like rivers, into greater streams. God knows the source of every drop, and on the day of recompense, many of the "helps" will receive the chief reward. Beloved, are you helping? Are you supporting your pastor, your brother, your husband, your mother, or your fellow worker? When the harvest comes, will both the one who sows and the one who reaps rejoice together?

You can help by holy prayer,
Helpful love and joyful song,
Oh, the burdens you may bear,
Oh, the sorrows you may share,
Oh, the crowns you yet may wear,
If you help along.Shalom.

Daily Blessings

“Again, they are diminished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.” - Ps 107:39

Oppression is the exertion of strength over weakness, the triumph of power over helplessness. When Hezekiah was struck with sickness, death loomed over him, and he felt oppressed, crying out, “Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me” (Isaiah 38:14). In his distress, all his self-reliance melted away. He felt utterly helpless, barely able to muster the strength to cry out for deliverance.

Oppression, then, is a burden added to the weight of poverty. A man may be poor but not necessarily oppressed. But when poverty is combined with oppression, the weight becomes unbearable. God, in His dealings with His people, often strips them bare, making them poor in spirit. Once they are brought low, He allows additional burdens—oppression of heart, spirit, and conscience—to press upon them, driving them to cry out in anguish.

The mark of life is found in these groans, sighs, and cries under the weight of oppression. The dead in sin feel nothing; hypocrites and those at ease in their religion are unaware of this kind of burden. They may experience temptations or fears of judgment, but they don’t feel the weight of oppression like the living soul does. The true child of God cries out, groans in distress, and wrestles with the Lord until He appears and brings deliverance.

This inward struggle is known only to those who have received the Spirit of grace and supplication. It’s the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart, helping our weakness and making intercession for us with groanings too deep for words.
