The main purpose of WPCU is to enhance Ecumenism. The term โ€˜ecumenismโ€™ comes from the Greek word โ€˜oikoumeneโ€™, which means "the whole inhabited world" (Matt 24:14; Acts 17:31).

This word Ecumenism is used to define:
a) The entire church throughout the world.
b) Efforts by Christians of different churches to develop closer relationships and better understanding with each other.

As Christians pray together, we understood and appreciate ourselves and others and we are able to cooperate more in the pilgrimage of accomplishing the mission of God on earth.

The service of Prayer for Christian Unity that is taking place today is organised by International Ecumenical Movement-Kenya (IEM-K). IEM-K is a grassroot ecumenical initiative that allows Christians from all Christian confessions to meet for prayer and to ecumenically reflect on God's mission on earth.

Churches and congregations in Nairobi are encouraged to send representatives to this service hosted by Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nile Road off Jogoo Rd. (see link for directions).

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years in which Christians around the world take part in an octave of prayer for visible Christian unity. By annually observing the WPCU, Christians move toward the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer "that they all may be one." (cf. John 17:21).

The text used in this prayers is usually prepared by an international group appointed jointly by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (PCPCU) of the Roman Catholic Church and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

This year's text was prepared by the Middle East Council of Churches based in Beirut, Lebanon. These year's theme is: โ€œWe have seen his star in the East and have come to pay homage to Him.โ€ (Mt 2:2).

To mark this very significant event in the life of the church, International Ecumenical Movement-Kenya has organized prayers at Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church Nile Rd off Jogoo Rd on 22nd January 2022 from 9.00am-12.00pm (EAT). The service will be aired live on KirkTV.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
With more than 100 years of history, this annual observance involves Christian communities throughout the world.

At least once a year, Christians are reminded of Jesusโ€™ prayer for his disciples that โ€œthey may be one so that the world may believeโ€ (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that touches off this special experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

WHEN: Traditionally the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of St Peter and St Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity.
