THOU SHALT NOT WORSHIP ANY IDOLS
INTRODUCTION
Idolatry isn’t just about bowing before a statue or kneeling to a carved figure. It runs deeper; and it’s a problem even in modern, well-lit places of worship. It’s one of the sharpest ways to insult the Almighty, and He has never tolerated it.
Here’s a gripping look at why we must not bow to idols or images, what idolatry really is, and how it has played out throughout Scripture.
1. WHAT IS IDOLATRY?
On the surface, idolatry is the worship of anything other than the Almighty. But at its core, it’s deeper: disobedience itself is idolatry. That’s what Saul learned when he chose to spare King Agag and the best sheep instead of obeying completely. He was told rebellion is like witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry (1 Samuel 15:22–24). And it doesn’t stop there. Covetousness, greedy desire for more is also idolatry (Colossians 3:5; Ephesians 5:5). When we long for created things more than the Creator, we bow down in our hearts.
2. THE SECOND COMMANDMENT IS CLEAR
The second commandment forbids making, bowing to, or serving any image; whether in heaven above, on earth, in the sea, or under the earth (Exodus 20:4–5;Deuteronomy 5:8-10). No exceptions. Not even as symbols of Him is permitted.
3. NO IMAGE OF ELOHIM; YOU SAW NO FORM
When the Almighty appeared at Mount Sinai, Israel heard His voice but saw no shape. That was intentional. He warned them not to corrupt themselves by trying to represent Him physically (Deuteronomy 4:15–18). No image can portray the Holy One of Israel.
4. IDOLATRY IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN
From Genesis to Revelation, the command is firm: have no other gods, serve no idols, and don’t learn the way of the nations. It is detestable. It provokes judgment. It separates us from Elohim (Genesis 35:2–4; Exodus 20:3–5; Leviticus 19:4; Deuteronomy 7:25–26; 1 Chronicles 16:26; Isaiah 42:8; Jeremiah 10:2–5; Ezekiel 14:6; Hosea 13:2; 1 Corinthians 10:14; Revelation 21:8).
5. THOSE WHO MAKE THEM BECOME LIKE THEM
Carved idols are mute, blind, and lifeless. And those who worship them become just as spiritually dead: numb to truth, blind to righteousness (Psalms 115:4–8).
6. HOW IDOLS ARE MADE
Idols are made of Wood, Gold, and Lies. Isaiah mocks the foolishness of idol-making. A man cuts down a tree, uses half for firewood, then carves the rest into a god, bows to it, and says, “Deliver me.” He feeds on ashes. His heart is deceived (Isaiah 44:9–20).
7. THE CHRISTMAS TREE IS A COPY OF HEATHEN PRACTICES
Jeremiah describes the customs of the nations: they cut a tree, deck it with silver and gold, and fasten it so it won’t totter (Jeremiah 10:1–5). This is the origin of the Christmas tree 🎄 and many Christian have followed this tradition. Elohim says, don’t learn their ways. It may look innocent, but it’s rooted in idolatry.
8. PSALMS ON IMAGES: SILVER, GOLD, AND HANDS OF MEN
Their idols are crafted by men; mouths that don’t speak, eyes that don’t see. And yes, those who trust in them become like them (Psalms 115:4–8).
9. IDOLATERS WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM
No idolater has a place in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:8; Revelation 22:15). The Kingdom is holy. Idolaters are cut off. No exceptions.
10. THE MOLTEN CALF AT SINAI
Israel made a golden calf, called it their god, and celebrated. The wrath of the Almighty burned hot, and thousands died (Exodus 32:1–35).
11. RACHAEL AND HER FATHER’S IDOLS
Rachael stole her father Laban’s household gods, hid them under her saddle, and lied about it. The idols couldn’t speak, protect, or move (Read the story in Genesis 31:19–35).
12. DAGON FALLS BEFORE THE ARK OF COVENANT
When the Philistines placed the Ark of Elohim in Dagon’s temple, the idol fell flat, broken and defeated. No false god stands before the Almighty (1 Samuel 5:1–5).
13. SOLOMON’S HEART TURNED
In his later years, Solomon worshipped Ashtoreth, Milcom, Chemosh, and Molech, abominations of the nations. He built high places and provoked Elohim to anger. It came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and HIS HEART WAS NOT PERFECT with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.(1 Kings 11:1–10).
14. THE RIOT OVER DIANA OF EPHESUS
When Paul preached against idols, silversmiths who made shrines of Diana stirred up the city. They cried, Great is Diana of the Ephesians and chaos followed (Acts 19:23–41). Idolatry is deeply rooted among gentiles. We must free from this idolatry.
15. MICAH’S IDOL AND FALSE PRIEST
A man named Micah made an idol, hired a Levite as his priest, and thought Elohim would bless him for it. It ended in confusion and robbery (Judges 17–18).
16. NEBUCHADNEZZAR’S GOLDEN STATUE
Nebuchadnezzar built a giant image and forced everyone to bow to it or else one would be burned in a furnace. But three faithful men stood firm. They refused to bow down to the golden image and said whether Elohim would save them from the fire or He didn't, they would not bow and worship it. They were thrown into fire, but the Son of Man walked with them (Daniel 3:1–30).
17. GIDEON’S EPHOD BECOMES A SNARE
Gideon made a golden ephod from spoils of war. It became an idol, and all Israel went wh***ng after it. It became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.(Judges 8:24–27).
18. JEROBOAM’S GOLDEN CALVES
Fearing people would return to Judah, Jeroboam made two golden calves and told Israel, “These are your gods.” He led the nation into great sin (1 Kings 12:26–30).
19. SAUL CONSULTED A FAMILIAR SPIRIT
When Elohim stopped answering him, Saul turned to a medium. He broke the command and sealed his fate (1 Samuel 28:3–20).
20. TRUSTING PEOPLE OR SOMETHING ELSE OTHER THAN ELOHIM
Trusting someone rather than Elohim can be counted as idolatry. When we place our confidence, hope, or security in people, systems, or even ourselves instead of the Almighty, we give to another what belongs only to Him. This misplacement of trust is spiritually dangerous and condemned in Scripture (Jeremiah 17:5; Isaiah 31:1; Proverbs 3:5–6; Psalm 146:3; Hosea 10:13; Isaiah 30:1–2; Micah 7:5; Psalm 118:8–9; 2 Chronicles 16:7–9; Deuteronomy 32:37–38).
21. COMMON IDOLS IN CHURCHES TODAY
Statues of Jesus, Mary and other so-called "saints” placed at the front of buildings are idols. Crosses and crucifixes treated as sacred objects. Images of a white man as Messiah are idols. Prayer to relics, beads, and sacred items. Icons and painted portraits used in worship settings. Money, music, and church titles turned into idols in practice.
22. IDOLS ARE A WORK OF ERROR
The prophets warned that idols are vanity, a doctrine of lies, and the work of errors. They cannot do good or evil. They are not Elohim, and their makers will be ashamed (Jeremiah 10:14–15; Habakkuk 2:18–20).
23. IDOLATRY DEFILED THE LAND OF ISRAEL
Idolatry is not just personal sin; it defiles entire lands. The Almighty drove out nations before Israel because of idolatry. The land itself vomited them out (Leviticus 18:24–28; Deuteronomy 12:29–31).
24. IDOLATRY IS SPIRITUAL ADULTERY
Throughout Scripture, the Almighty likens idolatry to adultery. He called Israelites a harlot when they turned to other gods. He is a jealous Elohim. To bow to another is betrayal to Him (Ezekiel 6:9; Hosea 2:2; James 4:4).
25. FINAL WARNING IN REVELATION: COME OUT OF HER
In the last days, Babylon is filled with idolatry and filth. A voice from heaven says, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins. This is a final call to flee idolatry (Revelation 18:4–5).
CONCLUSION
Dear brethren, the Almighty is not far from us. But He will not share His glory. He calls us to holiness. To worship in spirit and in truth. Let’s run; yes, run from idolatry. Let’s clean our hearts and our homes. Let’s teach our children that no object deserves reverence; only the Almighty does.
Because idols fall. But those who trust in Elohim shall never be moved.
Blessed abundantly.
