LESSON 1

WHY DO WE HAVE TO DIE?

You are welcome to another edition of Insights from God's Word, a Bible study programme that is committed to sharing God's Word by allowing the Bible to speak for itself.

In this edition, we continue with our series on The Truth About Death. In this study, I want us to consider the question: Why do we have to die?

As people go through the various stages of life, not a few have pondered over the question of human mortality. Within the deepest recesses of the human heart is the longing to live forever. There is something in us that repulses the cold reality of death. In the perfect world that God created for mankind (Genesis 2:8-15), there were no graveyards because man was not made by his Creator to suffer death. Death, pain, sorry and sickness was never meant to be part of the experiences of man. The Bible teaches that God created us in His image (Genesis 1:26). Since our Creator possess immortality (1 Timothy 6:16), it was His plan to bestow on us this gift of eternal life.

However, just like other intelligent beings in the universe of God, we had a choice to make. One of the Creator's special angelic creation called Lucifer has disobeyed Him (Ezekiel 28:12-17; Isaiah 14:12-17), and cast a snare on His character of love. It therefore became necessary for all intelligent beings in the universe of God to choose whether they will obey the Creator, God or they will defect to the side of Lucifer and his host of fallen angels (Revelation 12:7-9).

Because God had made His intelligent creation to possess the gift of free will, they could choose to obey Him or decide to obey the voice of the enemy. And so in as much as God would have wished to offer the human race immortality right at our creation, He decided to hold on until man had passed a simple test of loyalty to His Creator. Man must be given the opportunity to choose between God and Satan just like all the other intelligent creation in the universe of God. And so from Genesis 2:16-17, we read about the details of God's test of loyalty for mankind as follows: "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:16-17).

Friends, from Genesis 3:1-6, we read the sad account of the fall of the human race. Our first parents disobeyed God's commandment not to eat of the forbidden fruit. They heeded to the voice of Satan rather than the command of their Creator. From the very moment Adam and Eve disobeyed the express command of God, death became a painful part of the experiences of the human race. We began to degenerate. We began to die. Our sin brought unto us the foreign enemy of death (1 Corinthians 15:26).

The apostle Paul made this point clearer when he wrote the following statement in the book of Romans: "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Beloved, the Bible is clear. We die because of sin. We die because of our disobedience to the express commandments of God. In fact, sin is defined in Scripture as the transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4). Sin is actually obeying the voice of Satan instead of heeding to the commandments of God. And as we have noted above, sin brings with it the painful consequences of sorrow, misery, pain and ultimately death.

But dear friends, the text in Romans 6:23 does not just spell out the penalty for our sin, it also gives us hope. The entire text reads: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Beloved, the latter part of the text above provides a positive outlook to the sin problem. Yes! The wages of sin is death; but also the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. This text offers hope to the human race. The text boldly gives an indication that something positive has been done about the penalty that man must suffer for His sin.

And friends, that's exactly what we read from the beautiful pages of Scripture. From the book of Genesis right through to the book of Revelation, we learn how God took a radical step to set us free from the penalty of the eternal death that our sin has brought upon us. We learn from the Bible how God offered His only begotten Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 2:2; Romans 3:25; Hebrews 9:28). Friends, in regard to this sacrifice that our heavenly Father made for the human race, the apostle John writes: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16, NKJV).

Exhortation: As we can see in this study, sin is a serious issue. Sin made us to lose our Eden home and brought unto us the curse of death, sorrow and all the suffering we see in our world today. But as tragic as this virus of sin can be, we cannot deal with it ourselves. We need a power beyond us to help us to overcome it. Thankfully, God has graciously provided this help in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ. If you will surrender your heart to Jesus today, He will give you the strength to overcome and resist sin. He has done it for me, and I know for sure He can do it for you. Why not ask Him to be the Lord and Saviour of your life today? Just ask Him Now!

In our next study, we will consider in detail whether God's solution to the sin problem offers us hope beyond the grave. The Bible Study references for this study are Job 14:14-15, Isaiah 26:19 and John 11:25. Please do well to go through these passages before the next study is released.

[Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture passages are from the King James Version.]

Stay blessed and keep shining for King Jesus.

ADVENT SERIES ON DEATH

INTRODUCTION

You are welcome to Insights from God's Word, a Bible Study Programme that is committed to sharing God's Word by allowing the Bible to speak for itself.

Friends, we greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

In this study, we bring you the introduction to our series on the subject of DEATH. Death is basically the cessation of life. It is a reality that we see all around us; yet, like vapour that passes through our fingers into the thin air, its mystery has eluded the simple as well as the learned. From ancient times people from all walks of life have pondered over the question of death. Yet, despite all the knowledge that we have been able to acquire over the centuries, the question of death still remains a mystery yet to be unraveled. To many secular people, death is simply a reverse of the life process whereby the dead person enters into a state of nothingness.

In the religious world, however, several doctrines abound on the subject of death. The diverse teachings do not usually seek to explain the mystery of death but most often try to present a viewpoint on what happens to man after death. For instance, some religious groups view death as the transition of man from the physical state of life to a spiritual state of life; others view death as a process of reincarnation from one life form to another based on the deeds of the previous life; others view their dead as having immediate life after death in the presence of God or in torments in hell; some groups also view death as a total annihilation while others view death as a temporary sleep to be followed by a resurrection at some point in time.

The plethora of varied explanations on death out there have left many people confused in regard to this all important topic. But the good news is that despite all the diverse interpretations on death out there, the Bible, God's Authoritative Word, provides clear realistic answers on the subject. And so in this series, we are going to find out what God's Word has to say on a number of issues about death. This series, we believe, will clear the minds of many on the mystery of death, and actually give every reader ample reasons to face the reality of death with courage and hope.

The entire series is dubbed: The Truth About Death. The topics in this Special Series of Bible Study are as follows:

1. Why do we have to die?

2. Is there hope beyond the grave?

3. What happens to man after death?

4. When a person dies where does he go?

5. Don't the righteous rest in Abraham's bosom while the wicked are tormented in hell after death?

6. "...to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord": An exposition on Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:8.

7. "by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,": An exposition on Peter's words in 1 Peter 3:19.

8. "For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead": An exposition on Peter's words in 1 Peter 4:6.

9. Can the dead communicate with the living? Exploring what the Bible says about spirits, ghosts, demons and the dead.

10. "You will not surely die": the lie that spawned spiritualism.

Beloved, we believe that this 10 - Part Series of Bible Study is going to be a real blessing in your life. ADVENT SERIES ON THE GODHEAD

INTRODUCTION

You are welcome to Insights from God's Word, a Bible Study Programme that is committed to sharing God's Word by allowing the Bible to speak for itself.

Friends, we greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

In this study, we bring you the introduction to our series on the Godhead. The Godhead is one of the popular topics in Scripture which has generated a lot of debates and controversies in Christendom over the years. In fact, several theories have been formulated in an attempt to explain or search out the Creator God.

The Bible however makes it clear that this topic is shrouded in mystery and cannot be fully understood. From the apostle Paul we read the following in relation to this point: "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness" (1 Timothy 3:16). In the book of Job, God Himself settled the issue with the following strong words:
"11:7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

11:8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

11:9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea."

(Job 11:7-9)
Beloved, the passages above are clear. We cannot fully understand the totality of the ways of God and His Being; more especially, in our fallen deplorable state. However, the Bible does not also leave us with scanty or no information about God. In fact, there is so much that the Bible reveals about the Creator God and His nature. In this series, we will allow the Spirit of God to lead us as we attempt to explain a concept that is so high and lofty, and beyond the wisdom of even unfallen beings. The entire series is dubbed: The Godhead. The topics in this Special Series of Bible Study are as follows:

1) The Godhead

2) God the Father

3) God the Son

4) The God-Man

5) "... His only begotten Son...": An exposition on Christ's words in John 3:16.

6) "... the beginning of the creation of God": An exposition on Christ's words in Revelation 3:14.

7) "... the firstborn of every creature": An exposition on Paul's words in Colossians 1:15.

8) "... the firstborn from the dead ...": An exposition on John's words in Revelation 1:5.

9) Melchizedek and the Son of God: An exposition on Paul's words in Hebrews 7:1-3.

10) Who is Michael the Archangel?

11) God the Holy Spirit

12) An Invitation to Experience the Godhead

HOW EACH OF THE APOSTLES DIED.

1. Matthew
Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, killed by a sword wound.

2. Mark
Died in Alexandria, Egypt , after being dragged by Horses through the streets until he was dead.

3. Luke
Was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.

4. John (The son of Zebedee)

Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge Basin of Boiling Oil during a wave of persecution in Rome.
However, he was miraculously delivered from death.
John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison Island of Patmos.
He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos.
The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey.
He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.

5. Peter
He was crucified upside down on an X-shaped cross.
According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die In the same way that Jesus Christ had died.

6. James ( The brother of Jesus Christ)
The leader of the Church in Jerusalem , was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club.
* This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation.

7. James
(the Son of Zebedee)
Was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry.
As a strong leader of the church, James was beheaded at Jerusalem.
The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial.
Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of ex*****on.
Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.

8. Bartholomew
Also known as Nathaniel was a missionary to Asia.
He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey.
Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.

9. Andrew
Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece.
After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony.
His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words:

'' I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.''

He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.

10. Thomas
Was stabbed with a spear in *India* during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the Sub-continent.

11. Jude
Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.

12. Matthias
The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.

13. Paul
Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67.
Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire.
These letters, which taught many of the foundational Doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.

Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the Apostles and Disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith.

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: But he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Pass on to encourage other Christians
Why Do we feel sleepy in Prayer,
But stay awake through a 3 hour movie ?
Why are we so bored when we look at the HOLY BOOK,
But find it easy to read other books ?
Why is it so easy to ignore a message about God,
Yet we forward the nasty ones ?
Why are Prayers getting smaller,
But bars and clubs are expanding
Why is it so easy to worship a celebrity,
But very difficult to engage with God ?

Think about it, are you going to forward this ?
Are you going to ignore it, because you think you will get laughed at ?

Forward this to all your friends.
80% of you won't forward this.
God said: If you deny me in front of your friends, I will deny you on the day of judgment:

When one door closes, God opens two: If God has opened doors for you do something about it

Make this message your contribution to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Be Blessed.

LESSON 9
AN INVITATION TO ENTER THE HEAVENLY SANCTUARY
You are welcome to another edition of Insights from God's Word, a Bible study programme that is committed to sharing God's Word by allowing the Bible to speak for itself.

Friends, I want to thank the Lord so much for how far He has brought us. This study will be the last in our series on His Way is in the Sanctuary. It is captioned: An Invitation to Enter the Heavenly Sanctuary. It is my prayer that the Lord will use this study to encourage us on our daily upward journey to the city of God.

From the gospel according to John, we learn that as the time drew near for our Lord to leave this world to the Father, He gave the following precious promise to the disciples:
"14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

(John 14:1-3)
From this message of hope above, we learn that there are many mansions in the city of God. However, God's people can only abide in them after Christ had prepared a place for them in heaven. Our previous lesson on “Christ’s Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary” made it clear that the preparatory work that Christ mentioned in John 14 had to do with His High Priestly ministry on behalf of the penitent in the heavenly sanctuary. You see, when Christ ascended on high, He first entered into the Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary to begin a work of intercession for the people of God. The apostle Paul captures this point in the following passages:

i) "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us" (Hebrews 9:24).

ii) "Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us" (Romans 8:34; see also Hebrews 7:22-25).

After Christ had fulfilled the duties of the high priest in the Holy Place of heaven's sanctuary, He entered into the second phase of His work in the Most Holy Place of the same sanctuary. We noted in our previous study that the second phase of Christ's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary began way back in 1844. The prophet Daniel beheld the beginning of this event in the following spectacular manner:
"7:13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed."

(Daniel 7:13-14)
Beloved, just as the high priest cleansed the earthly tabernacle on the Day of Atonement, so is our Redeemer now cleansing the heavenly sanctuary of the sins of God's people (compare Leviticus 16 with Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 11:19; Revelation 14:6-7). This is the important work that Christ must do before His children can have access to the mansions in the heavenly city, even the New Jerusalem (see John 14:1-3; Hebrews 12:22-23; Revelation 21).

Friends, the Scripture makes it clear that very soon this preparatory work of Christ which has to do with the cleansing of the sins of the penitent in the heavenly sanctuary will come to an end. When this day finally comes, the Redeemer will leave the sanctuary, and the destiny of every inhabitant of earth will then be decided either for eternal life or for eternal damnation (see Revelation 22:11; Revelation 22:12).

It is encouraging to note that through the gentle entreaties of the Holy Spirit, Christ now continues to plead with every descendant of Adam to renounce the ways of unrighteousness and come to drink of Himself, even the Fountain of Life, wherein is found eternal life (Revelation 7:17; Jeremiah 2:13). If we drink of Christ today, He will lead us to drink of the water of life that flows from the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary of God in the soon coming future. From the book of Revelation, we obtain this beautiful picture in relation to the water of life that flows from throne of God:
"22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever."

(Revelation 22:1-5)
Beloved, we see in this text a glimpse of the precious things that the Lord has prepared for those who love Him. The promise of Christ for His children is not only to drink of the water of life and partake of the fruits on the tree of life. Besides these and other innumerable blessings, the saints will also enjoy a close communion with God as they serve Him in the heavenly sanctuary. From the book of Revelation, we read the following concerning God's end time saints who will go through the final tribulation:
"7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

7:14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

7:15 THEREFORE ARE THEY BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD, AND SERVE HIM DAY AND NIGHT IN HIS TEMPLE: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

7:16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

(Revelation 7:13-17; Capital Emphasis Added)
Interestingly, the Saviour also affirms this incredible truth with the following timeless words: "HIM THAT OVERCOMETH WILL I MAKE A PILLAR IN THE TEMPLE OF MY GOD, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name" (Revelation 3:12; Capital Emphasis Added).

Friends, this is incredibly good news. Soon and not too far away, we are going to serve God not in earthly temples but in the real tabernacle that the Lord pitched and not man (see Hebrews 8:2; Revelation 7:15). Oh! The heavenly tabernacle is vast and glorious. We may be tempted to imagine it as a small tabernacle with a Holy Place and a Most Holy Place. But the Scripture makes it clear that the tabernacle that the Lord pitched is heaven itself. In fact, I believe the order of heaven is what creates a distinction between the two phases (that is, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place) of the heavenly tabernacle (see Hebrews 9:24; Daniel 7:13-14). When we finally enter the city of God, we will have the privilege of entering the Most Holy Place; the very throne room of God where the feet of the four living creatures and the twenty four elders have trod (see Revelation 3:21; Revelation 4-5; Revelation 7:4-12). What a joy that day will bring when we behold the face of the God of the entire universe (see Revelation 22:4).

Beloved, it is a clear fact that this present world has nothing better to offer us; for it is filled with the bitter curse of sin. Our fondest aspirations of the future are always cut short by sickness, sorrow, and death. Maybe you are pondering in your heart, how can I be part of those who will enjoy the bliss of the sanctuary above? My dear friend, heaven's invitation to each one of us is clear: "And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17; see also John 3:16).

Beloved, even as you go through this study, Christ is preparing a place for His children in heaven through His work of atonement in the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary above. The Saviour is blotting out the sins of the penitent from the record books of heaven so they can stand before God vindicated at the Second Advent. And the good news is that, Christ can blot away your sins too. You still have the chance of being part of the saints that Christ will redeem to heaven at His second coming. You see, it does not matter what you've done in the past. The Scripture makes it clear that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). The cleansing blood of Christ is sufficient to purge you from any sin that you have ever committed. And His saving grace is powerful enough to change you from the worst of sinners into a saint (see Isaiah 1:18).

My dear friend, today is the day of salvation; even now is the time of your Divine visitation. The probation of earth’s inhabitants is just about to close (see Revelation 22:10-12). Why don't you accept Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour of your life while there is still time to do so? Why don’t you come to Jesus just as you are? If you come to Him with a contrite heart of genuine confession and repentance, He will forgive your sins, blot them out from the sanctuary, and fashion for you a home in the city of God. If this is your wish, why don't you ask God in prayer now to help you to accept Christ into your heart today, so He can mold you through His Spirit to be able to live a life that pleases Him.

Exhortation: "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne" (Revelation 3:21).

Stay blessed and keep shining for King Jesus.
