RMG – Fr Silvio Roggia Presents the New Ratio Fundamentalis: On 13 July 2026, the Sacred Heart Community in Rome gathered for the traditional “Goodnight” with the General Councillors. On this occasion, Fr Silvio Roggia, General Councillor for Formation, introduced the 5th edition of the Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis et Formationis, recently promulgated by the Rector Major and his General Council.
To open his reflection, Fr Roggia presented the image of a suitcase, symbolising not only the long journey that led to the preparation of the new Ratio, but even more the much longer journey that now begins with its implementation throughout the Congregation.
The new Ratio Fundamentalis offers an updated vision of Salesian formation, responding to the realities of today’s world while remaining deeply rooted in the charism of St John Bosco. It seeks to accompany Salesians through every stage of formation, promoting human, spiritual, intellectual, pastoral, and community growth so that they may serve young people with authenticity, competence, and missionary zeal.
For the Salesians of the Africa-Madagascar Regions, where the Congregation continues to experience remarkable growth in vocations and apostolic works, the promulgation of the new Ratio marks an important milestone. As formation communities continue to expand across the region, the document provides a renewed framework that strengthens the quality, consistency, and intercultural richness of initial and ongoing formation.
Its implementation is expected to foster deeper vocational discernment, greater fidelity to the Salesian charism, and the formation of educators and pastors capable of responding creatively to the diverse social, cultural, and pastoral realities of Africa. It also reinforces the region’s commitment to forming Salesians who are spiritually mature, professionally competent, and fully dedicated to the evangelisation and education of young people, especially those most in need.
As Fr Roggia reminded those present, the publication of the Ratio Fundamentalis is not the conclusion of a process but the beginning of a new journey. Its true value will be measured in the lives of Salesians who allow themselves to be continually formed, so that every Salesian community becomes an authentic school of discipleship and mission.
The Africa-Madagascar Region welcomes this renewed vision with hope, recognising it as an opportunity to strengthen formation, deepen Salesian identity, and accompany future generations of Salesians in living Don Bosco’s mission with renewed enthusiasm and fidelity.
